You should be able to contact them, but it seems that their contact mechanisms have changed. Try emailing them at nasupport@.... They should be able to direct your general comment to the correct department or at least point you in the right direction to someone who can address the issue.

Re: Who Betrayed Anne Frank and Her Family? #holocaust

JoAnne Goldberg

I am not planning to read the book, but I wonder if it goes into more
detail about the process. As shown in the segment, the approach was
almost cavalier, with possible suspects dismissed because "he didn't say
anything anti-Semitic" or "there's no evidence that Nazis living just a
few feet away spotted the family in their hiding place."

As pointed out in the articles, there is no reason to believe a list of
Jewish addresses existed. If I'm going into hiding, I'm going to
minimize the number of people who know, and keep it to a trusted and
trustworthy few. The Franks weren't signing up for Meals on Wheels.

I'm sure this six-year undertaking was expensive, and I understand the
financial need for a dramatic reveal vs, say, the mail carrier ratted
them out. But I agree that it's pretty reprehensible to identify a
fellow Jew on flimsy circumstantial "well, he might have a way to turn
them in" evidence when he has no one to speak on his behalf 80 years
later.  Do we know if other Jewish hiding places were similarly exposed?
During the segment, there was a brief indication that the Nazis were
familiar with the signs of a hiding place: the
cabinets/bookcases/pantries with well-worn grooves on the floor.

Passenger-list name interpretation #names

David Brostoff

I have posted two images from a passenger list of the S.S. Zeeland, arriving in New York on Oct. 2, 1906. (The second image, ViewMate 96928, is for handwriting comparison.)
<https://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM96927>

I would be grateful to know the name of the passenger on line 30 of the first image. She is the sister of Frieda (Blacker) Brostoff on line 28.

Thank you,

Re: How to obtain Lodz cemetery photo #lodz

Moishe Miller

Hello,

For those searching Lodz, there is also an excellent book that covers many names, dates and tombstone inscriptions from the earlier Lodz cemetery. Read about the early cemetery here: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stary_cmentarz_%C5%BCydowski_w_%C5%81odzi (if you open in Chrome, right click on the page to translate the WIKI to English).

To see the actual book, all 256 pages, you can go to
http://bc.wimbp.lodz.pl/Content/75562/Stary_Cmentarz_Zydowski_w_Lodzi_1938a.pdf

If you find a page of interest, you can type the Polish or Hebrew into
translate.google.com
to understand the text.

For instance, I wanted to  understand the 5-line entry on page numbered 212, #673 (image 16 of 256). I typed it all into Google Translate

#673. zamozny kupiec przedzy bawelniane przybyl do lodz
prawdopodobnie okolo 1850 r. z Czestochowy. W Lodz nalezal
Sand do grup maskilow, skupiajacych sie dookola zalozonego
przez Zajdemana domu modlilwy dla postepowcow. Z.
Zajdemanem (v. nr. 116) byl Zand skoligacony przez syna swego
Moryca, Z. (v. nr. 2195 i 853).

and Google translated

# 673. a wealthy merchant of cotton yarn came to Łódź probably
around 1850 from Czestochowa. In Lodz, Sand belonged to a group
of maskils, gathered around the house founded by Zajdeman,
praying for the progressives. Z. Zajdeman (v. No. 116) was Zand
connected by his son Moryc, Z. (v. No. 2195 and 853).

Stay safe,

The London Gazette #unitedkingdom

Richard Stower

I have found a possible cousin-in-law, Olga (Haves) Suchostawer, listed in the August 23, 1949 issue of The London Gazette. The page appears to list the names and occupations of refugees and/or displaced persons living in post-war London. Her husband, Sigmund, was murdered in the Holocaust.

Is there someone who knows the purpose of The London Gazette?

Thank you.

Historians bash ‘rubbish’ findings of investigation into Anne Frank betrayal |
Headline in web newspaper TIMES OF ISRAEL

Big conclusions demand big proof,” historian Johannes Houwink ten Cate told The Times of Israel. “I cannot believe that a member of the Jewish Council traded addresses for freedom. After the Council was abolished, its members were sent to camps, if they did not go into hiding.”

As professor emeritus of Holocaust studies at the University of Amsterdam, Houwink ten Cate spent decades researching the city under German occupation. According to the scholar, Van den Bergh was in hiding throughout most of 1944, including during the raid on the secret annex in early August.

“Van den Bergh’s special status [of being protected as a council member and otherwise] had been withdrawn by the Nazis,” said Houwink ten Cate. “If he had betrayed the Frank family, he had to come out into the open, and that exactly was what he was trying to prevent.”

Familysearch port of origin potential error (e.g. Boulogne Sur Mer in Argentina instead of France) #general #announcements

kosfiszer8@...

I just noticed that  for arrivals in the port of Montevideo, Uruguay the records in Familysearch (based on a book of passengers) showed Boulogne Sur Mer, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, instead of Boulogne Sur Mer in France as the port of origin.
I also noticed similar issues with the port of Marseille in France.
Familysearch allows the editing of the data on the individual record, but this seems to me to be a general problem that needs to be addressed at a higher level than a record.

Who Was Dora ROSNER from Tarnow? #galicia #poland

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Who was Dora Rosner from Tarnow? A devout collector of envelopes bumped into a postcard sent in 1941 by Dora Rosner from Tarnow to her son Leo Leib Rosner un Shanghai. I have an interest in it because my late father was also names Leon Leib and his family hailed from the environs of Krakow and Tarnow. I checked the Sugihara list and Leo Leib is not there, however he filled pages of testimony in Yad Vashem for his mother and his father Mojzesz Rosner which means that he survived in Shangahi but Yad Vashem does not display the image of the PoTs so I have no idea where he settled after the war. Would love to hear from anyone who may have more info. Thanks. I enclose the postcard's scan.

Re: Translation of Hebrew tombstones Albany NY Bendel family #translation

davidmdubin@...

To the first I’ll just add that the first line of the first stone is a quote from genesis 24:1.

the second stone:
H(ere)L(ies)
the woman Ms Pessele wife of Mr Abraham
eighty seven years of age
she died Thursday (maybe Wednesday?) 6 Tishri
and buried Friday the 30th (?) of that month
year (5)622 by the short count (ie, not writing the thousands place)
May her soul be bound in the bonds of (everlasting) life

the dates are hard to read and my numbers are likely off,  as it is unusual not to bury quickly.

the last line is a boilerplate abbreviation used on both stones (and nearly all stones I’ve seen from the past few hundred years)

Are there lists of those incarcerated (and what happened to them) by the Nazis at the HKP forced labor camp in Vilna? I believe I may have a relative who was listed as a seamstress in the setup by Karl Plagge, which was somewhat similar to Schindler's.
Thank you.
