Re: Which burial ground is likely for a death registered in Battersea, London? #unitedkingdom

British death certificates do not state where burial took place so the certificate from GRO wouldn't help. I looked on the United Synagogue Find a Grave site. Lewis Bowman was buried in East Ham cemetery

Hi Lesley,

My first port of call would be the United Synagogues Find a grave page: https://www.theus.org.uk/category/find-grave
Just type in first name, surname and year. If you do this then it returns the following information.

Cemetery Full Name Last Name Date of Burial Section Row Plot #
East Ham LEWIS BOWMAN 25/06/1958 F 23 1527

They have the opening times for all their cemeteries and maps.  Google Maps have a "Street View" around a part of the cemetery, including section F.

Lecture "Finding Your Polish Ancestors Online Through the Polish State Archives" now online #poland #education #announcements

Ted Gostin

I wanted to let all who asked that my lecture given last Saturday, January 15, "Finding Your Polish Ancestors Online Through the Polish State Archives," is now online and available for viewing.  Since the Los Angeles Public Library's closed-captioning policies made it impossible to keep the video on the LAPL's Facebook or YouTube pages, I have posted a recording to my own web space with the library's permission.  The following link provides a page where the lecture can be viewed and the handout downloaded.

http://www.generationspress.com/Finding%20Your%20Polish%20Roots%20Online.html

I haven't decided whether it will remain online permanently, but it will be up long enough for anyone who missed the lecture last week to view it and/or download the handout.

"History and Geography of Eastern European research records". A virtual presentation by Amy Wachs  sponsored by the Jewish nGenealogical Society of Palm Beach County on February 9, 2022  at 1PM ET.

Researching our Eastern European ancestry remains challenging in many countries, where missing records may lead to frustrating “brick walls”.  This presentation offers guidance in using the region’s historical events and geography to help fill in gaps and move past brick walls. This presentation shows the ways to identify one's ancestors, find the places where they lived, and trace their migrations.

Amy Wachs, past president of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland, has been involved in Jewish genealogy for over 30 years, including currently serving on the Board of LitvakSIG, Inc. A retired attorney, she taught law in Latvia as a Fulbright Scholar and in Moldova as a Fulbright Senior Specialist. Amy is a frequent presenter of talks on Jewish and Eastern European genealogy.

To register, please go to jgspbc.org and click on Register for February.  You will receive an immediate acknowledgement and a link prior to the presentation on February 9. The meeting is free to JGSPBC members; guests are required to pay a $5 fee, applicable toward the $30.00 annual membership.

Re: Who Betrayed Anne Frank and Her Family? #holocaust

Larry Gaum

Dear Andrew
Thank you for your comments.
While I will defend your right to make your comments, I disagree with your observations.
Fortunately, I'm still above ground and can defend myself.
In a democratic country, both Canada and USA, one is considered innocent until proven guilty. The Jewish leader of which you refer, is dead.  Therefore, he will always remain innocent whether we like it or not.  He is unable to reach our from the grave to defend himself, despite conclusions that he was the one who betrayed the Frank family.
Even in investigations that are perceived as in depth and reliable, errors are, in many cases, unfortunately made.
In a court of law, this principe is accepted. Thats why we have Courts Of Law.
In Canada, we don't condemn or murder someone who may have collaborated with the Nazi Germans.  We demand proof and we don't take the law into our own hands, despite investigations by journalists who then publish books and seek to have the newspapers quote, in a redacted fashion, their conclusions.
We don't behave as the Israeli individuals of whom your refer, murdered other survivors because they stated they were guilty of collaboration.
With respect, I stand by my convictions  and disagree with your conclusions.
Larry Gaum

Notice Boulogne sur mer in Bienos Aires, Argentina is an inland town. It could mean a place of origin but not a port of any kind.

Hope this helps.

Earlier in this discussion, someone speculated that the TV network CBS timed the airing of this segment on Anne Frank to run on the same weekend as the synagogue hostage taking in Colleyville, Texas. However, this cannot the case. For several days prior to the airing of the program on Sunday the 16th, CBS had been running promotional ads for the tv program.  It is just coincidence that the two events took place in the same weekend.

Re: entry no. vs. death certificate no. #records

Brian Kerr

The entry number isn't the certificate number.

That number is the entry within a batch.

For example, a batch may have 100 images/documents and each specific one of that batch is the number that's called the entry number.

I hope I had explained this okay via text... :-))

I'm not the highest experienced expert with FamilySearch, but I try to learn what I can as I use/encounter something.

Good Luck! :-))

Re: List of Rabbis in New York Area mid 1800's #records

Jill Golden

I would like to thank everyone for all of their great suggestions, I would not have been able to find the information if it was not for your help.

It turns out the Rabbi was Louis Miller, age 25, Immigrated to the US in 1886, the same year as the wedding. He is listed in the 1900 census as a piano teacher. For those of you interested in him here is his Family Search page https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSJ2-VNF

The Synagogue or more likely an Aid Society was Rodfe Zedek Anshe Retove  , 225 East Broadway, New York 10002, found at Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute, New York Historical Synagogue Map. I'm sure this is the right one, since much of my family came from Rietavas (Lithuania). https://genealogy.cjh.org/synagogue-map?inputtext=rietavas&searchtype=words&Search=Search

I learned so much about searching street addresses, my eyes are a little crossed but glad I found something. He is listed in Enumeration District (ED) 70 in New York. I used Stephen Morse, One-Step Census to find it.

I'm hoping to connect more of my family to this Synagogue, yes the search goes on. Thank you again.

Re: How to obtain Lodz cemetery photo #lodz

Brian Kerr

Though I do like and use Find-A-Grave, but I've been able to locate Headstone Photos in BillionGraves that's not in Find-A-Grave (and vice versa).

The following link is to a list of Cemeteries in Poland that may (hopefully) be helpful in locating what you need.

https://billiongraves.com/site-map?country=Poland

On occasion, I've also reached out by email/phone to Cemeteries that were more than happy to provide information like a photo, but always keep in mind that there may be Records pertaining to a Burial without a specific location and/or Headstone (depending upon the circumstances).

I do wish you the best of luck! :-))

Re: Who Was Dora ROSNER from Tarnow- We Found It #poland #galicia

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Dear Genners,

With your help the question was solved. Her son Leo Leib ROSNER immigrated to the US in 1947 and Ancestry has the details of his parents. Leo was born in 1908 in Berlin. His mother

was Dwora BALSAM and she was born in Tarnow. It seems that the family went back to Poland after 1933. JRI-PL has her birth record and interestingly her father's given name was Arie

which means lion in Hebrew. Her maternal grandfather was called Leib.  Yad Vashem has several PoTs filled by different people called Leo Rosner which caused some initial confusion.

Thank You all.

Re: Who Betrayed Anne Frank and Her Family? #holocaust

Shelley Mitchell

And I disagree with Andrew Sverdlove. You are jumping to wildly broad unsubstantiated conclusions. Like the episode, you, like others, try to put Jews in a box. Think of the subject as merely an attempt to answer a question which cannot be answered.  Hindsight is not only 20:20 but it attempts in vain to see the past the same way a person in the past saw it.

The enterprise and the book are of no value to anyone. Hopefully the masses will figure that out and avoid the book. In the meantime a family’s name has been besmirched based on a guess.

Which burial ground is likely for a death registered in Battersea, London? #unitedkingdom

Lesley

My grandfather, Lewis Bowman, originally from Poland, died in London in 1958. I already have the information that his death was registered at Battersea in the April-May-June quarter, and there is a volume (5c) and page number (91). But I don't know how to find out more from this information. I have looked at the UK government site for ordering certificates (www.gro.gov.uk) but their available death listings don't include 1958. I don't even know how to find out which Jewish cemetery he is likely to have been buried in, although my grandmother, Rebecca Bowman, was buried at Waltham Abbey Cemetery (I have a photo of her gravestone which someone found for me in an online listing) so it is possible he was there too, but how do I find out? Any search I've done has come back with no results. NB they were married at Philpot Street Synagogue in London, if that gives any clues.

I'm probably missing something very obvious. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is also a BOOK!

For those who read, the information contained in more than 350 pages will be equal to, or even better than, the 60 minutes or you tube abridged version.

Who Betrayed Anne Frank and Her Family? #holocaust

Joseph Hirschfield

The book's author presented his theory. It was his answer to the question that has existed ever since the Ann Frank diary was published. It is why the 60 Minutes episode has created so much interest. That a Jew could betray other Jews to save his own life may be immoral but happened in other circumstances too. I recall reading of concentration camp inmates stealing food from the weak and the young. The need for survival can overwhelm all other considerations.
