Re: Herman LICHTENSTEIN born 1896 - no record before 1921 #usa

Renee Steinig

Men named Herman often show up on earlier records as Hyman.

This may be his birth record on, despite the difference in date. (His parents' names are similar to what's on his marriage record, also transcribed on FamilySearch -- Harris Lichtenstein, Eva Breslon.)

Hyman Lichtenstein
Born 4 March 1896 Manhattan
Parents Harris Lichtenstein, Eva Brotstock

You might want to order both records through the Family History Library's free search service, to interpret handwriting for yourself and to see if they include additional information.

Also see Hyman Lichtenstein with parents Harris and Eva on the 1900, 1910, and 1915 censuses.

I have provided a photograph and link for Shlomo Farkas' tombstone; he is my great-great grandfather on my mother's side of the family. I have been able to translate most of this, except for some details, that I believe to be important. Please, any assistance from someone more qualified than me, would be most appreciated.

Paris France's Louvre Museum Teams with Sotheby's to Investigate Provenance of Works Bought During WWll #holocaust #france #general

Sotheby’s auction house will help the Paris Louvre Museum research the history of items the museum acquired between 1933 and 1945 which may lead to “restitutions.” The agreement is for three years will help fund research which may led to restitutions digitization, the organization of seminars, study days and publications.

It is the first international auction house to have a department dedicated to provenance research and restitution.” Sotheby’s restitution department was founded in 1997.

“Last year, the Louvre launched an online database of 485,000 object records drawn from dozens of internal databases. More than 1,700 works that were recovered in Germany after the Second World War but have never been returned to the descendants of their rightful owners are listed under the category of Musées Nationaux Récupération. The works do not belong to the French state but are managed by the Louvre and entrusted to French national museums for safekeeping. A Louvre spokeswoman says that the “partnership with Sotheby’s concerns works which are in the Louvre collections, not the MNR”.

On January 27, The International Day of Film on Art, the Louvre plans a day of film screenings aas part of the joint program, The event includes The Art Market During the Occupation, a 2021 documentary based on the findings of the art historian Emmanuelle Polack who was appointed by the Louvre in 2020 to investigate acquisitions made both before and after the Second World War.

A study day is also scheduled for 2 February which will focus on “the chain of transfer of ownership of works and cultural objects… in the light of the German Occupation and the Vichy laws.” Other topics covered include “purchases at public auction [by] the Egyptian Department of Antiquities between 1933 and 1945”.

If your parents belonged to a synagogue, ask them.  I'm quite sure that vital records were still the responsibility of the church/synagogues at that time in the province of Quebec, and that deaths were recorded by them.  I imagine this would be necessary for burial.  I know for a fact that births were still recorded by the synagogues at that time.

Basically the information given within this journal mainly concerns the public time-table of the royal family, who will be met, fed or be at any such event: it also lists the honours list on the Sovreign's birthday (this runs to several pages or at New Year such as local Postman or the Vice Chancellor of a rival university  If you are a famous explorer or were to get a medal from Liz this would inform all your friends (or enemies),  If you have ben promoted or given a gong (Active Service Medal)  Don't all countries have such a publicaton???

I have found a possible cousin-in-law, Olga (Haves) Suchostawer, listed in the August 23, 1949 issue of The London Gazette. The page appears to list the names and occupations of refugees and/or displaced persons living in post-war London. Her husband, Sigmund, was murdered in the Holocaust.

Is there someone who knows the purpose of The London Gazette?

Thank you.

I posted this request earlier and realized belatedly that I neglected to post the pertinent link.

As my note in Viewmate indicates, I have four words in Russian I would be grateful to have translated.  I believe the last word identifies the family; it appears to be FRUCHTBEIM or FRUCHTBEIN .  My great-grandfather's sister, Rifka HURWITZ, married Abraham FRUCHTBAUM (there is a question about the exact name and spelling) in 1887.  They died in the Holocaust in 1941, although at least one of their sons, Jacob, came to the United States.  I am most grateful in advance for any assistance.

Thank you!

Accessing JewishGen's Maramaros vital records database #records #romania

Wendy Kalman

There is a record in JewishGen's Maramaros vital records database that I'd like to see (the listing shows identifying info for book, page & row). According to, the files have been photographed. It also says that death records for these dates often have a lot of info. But I cannot find a link on the page to see the photos so I can try and find the page I want. Am I missing something? The only links I see take me back to JewishGen's search page. Thank you.
