Lehmann Marx (my great great grandfather) was born in 1842 in Alsace Lorraine/Germany, father’s name probably Samuel, mother’s name unknown. He immigrated to the US in 1865. I have all his census records (New York), his death record (1905), several obituaries, most of his 14 children’s birth records. I have searched for 25 years and can’t find what city he was born in. I have information about his wife’s family (Meyer from Drachenbronn) two generations and more beyond her. They did not get married in Drachenbronn or any nearby town, and I’ve searched a lot of them, but I believe they were married before they immigrated. In January I sent the Livingston Masonic Library a check with a letter asking if they had his application, but if I ever hear from them I don’t expect to learn anything new.

Where else can I search? I don’t think I’m missing anything obvious, but I’m stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you for any help.

Re: Death Certificates from Palestine #records #israel

When we were locating the graves of my great- grandfather (Shiff) and great-great grandfather (Lev) I seem to remember there being three different burial organisations (two Ashkenazi - different orthodoxies; and one Sephardic).  Where they are buried, there was no sign of destruction/ desecration.

Re: Has anyone found useful results from this newspaper resource? #general

Lee Jaffe

I had a lot of success with ChroniclingAmerica. I found this resource after a JewishGen program about searching local records. My Schwartz branch lived in Perth Amboy NJ in the early part of the 20th c.  After a little trial and error, I’ve managed to find more than 100 articles and notices about my family. Some items were front page news, as when one of my mother’s uncles was arrested for stealing his mother’s jewelry or when another uncle was killed when he was struck crossing the street. One obituary furnished the names of all of my great-grandmother’s siblings and their father.   My grandparents’ marriage was in the society pages, as was a brief item about my great-grandparents attending a lecture by Eugene Debs. These were the days when minor events were reported: a 7 year old’s birthday party’s guest list including my grandfather and a future NJ attorney general. I read about my grandfather’s exploits in semi-pro basketball. My teenage grandparents were listed among the young people at a party. My newly-wed grandmother—Mrs L Schwartz — as a guest at a card party. I gained a lot of useful insights about their lives from reading these.  If you can find a paper for the town where your family lived, I highly recommend taking advantage.  It can bring their stories to life.

Gesher Galicia News Update from Ukraine and Poland for Sunday March 13th #galicia #poland #ukraine #general

Steven Turner

Gesher Galicia News Update from Ukraine and Poland for Sunday March 13th

We received a message from Vasyl Yuzishin, who has sent reports to us before. He lives on the outskirts of Lviv.

Lviv, March 13

"This morning at around 6am I was woken by the sound of rockets flying above my house towards the military base 25km from where I live. The base, as has already been reported, is near Yavoriv, about 35 km west of Lviv and not far from the border with Poland. There are reports that 35 people have been killed and around 150 injured."

Piotr Gumola, Gesher Galicia's representative in Poland, earlier wrote about the strain on Polish society of the huge influx of refugees - some 1.5 million - into the country in the past two and a half weeks, and in particular the many people trying to settle in Warsaw. We had a short message today from Beata, who manages a small bed and breakfast hotel in the center of Warsaw:

Warsaw, March 13

"For the last two weeks we've been helping some Ukrainian refugees who have come to Warsaw. This is all heartbreaking. We had some families staying with us at the B&B, and at some at our friends' places. There are many sad stories to tell ... .

With the terrible things happening in Ukraine at this moment, everyone here dreams of getting back to the pandemic situation!"

Re: Questions re putting family tree on genealogy websites #general

EA Wurster

To answer your questions, I offer the following.
1. It is entirely up to you how frequently you replace the GEDCOM file you have uploaded. It does take time, so you'll want to make sure you set aside enough time to export GEDCOM, check it, and then upload to various sites. This can range from simple to annoying. Each site is different, so you may want to make notes that can be used by you to guide the upload steps.
2, Again, each site is different in what happens when you upload a new GEDCOM. There might be an option to replace, make a new version, and so on. I would be cautious, since instructions aree not always as clear as they should be.
3. Your tree or subsequent updates do not affect DNA matching. They are separate data stores.
4. Your GEDCOM updates might affect hints that the site gives you about how you're connected to a match, and/or the historical records which apply to individuals in your tree.

As far as the possibility that this makes your digital life more insecure, my opinion is that the online threat already has your key data stored in illicit databases across the dark web. This information was obtained through one of the breaches that have occurred to a major internet source. You will also see that your name, email, phone, relatives and past addresses is pretty much there in an ordinary internet search. YMMV and of course it is your choice how much you'd like to share.

Thank you for the link to today's amazing program. The session was recorded and is available at . It is difficult to listen to Sharansky and Kavatsiuk without recognizing a moral duty to support Ukraine in its struggle to survive the attack from a megalomaniac tyrant bend on destruction.  I highly recommend this program to obtain both up-to-the-minute information on the today's tragic situation and to understand the evolution of Ukraine and its democratic institutions over the past 30 years.

Brian Kerr

Thank you all for your valuable input! :-))

There's only 1 early marriage document that has the surname spelled out "Thomashy".

I'm aware of the strong possibility that the surname (when the family) arrived in America had to have been changed (as many others had) based upon the phonetic sound. I just have a challenge in figuring out what it could have been, but only a few possibilities.

This prompted me to ask here..

Re: Help with names derivatives. Specifically wondering if Elios and Ios are related names. For FURMAN family in #ukraine #names

Jenniffer Hancock

I believe Ios is shortened for Iosef. (Josef).

I am getting these out of the translated records. I'm not sure where the originals are they are translating from.

There are basically 3 options.  Same person, Brothers, or totally unrelated people. Both households have a son of Zellick listed as a nephew in them.  But that could be unrelated Zellicks.

It's maddening. It would be helpful to have access to the 1834 Revision - but that's not available in hard or digital for this town in the USA. It's among the ones NOT filmed.  I'm thinking I might be at a dead end for the time being.

Thanks for letting me know the origin of Elio. It makes sense it would be Eliyahu. I think they are 2 different people. Maybe brothers.
