If you are interested in the names Jews chose when they were forced to
adopt Germanic names, this website is a real dream:

http://www.a-h-b.de/AHB/links_e.htm

The website refers to Germany but it includes Hohenems, now in the Voralberg,
which is part of our SIG. see: http//www.hohenems.at

Hohenems is also the site of a Jewish Museum; see http://www.jm-hohenems.at

This is the interesting choice of names of the Hohenems Jewish Community in
1813. Please note SULZER, the name of the famous Cantor, Salomon SULZER (1804 -
1890) who came >from Hohenems:

ILLES/OVA, DUN/OVA, VOTAVA, GALLYAS(OVA), STACH(OVA) #austria-czech

silvia stach <silviastach@...>

Dear,
I'm trying to track my family tree.
My family lost their members during the 1940's is Czech- Slovakia - Kosice.
(Ancient Czechoslovakia)
Their names were Teresa ILLES/OVA (my ant) Grandmother Irena DUN/OVA (died
in Ravensburg, GE), uncle Vaclav VOTAVA (died in Czechoslovakia, Ostrava)
GALLYAS(OVA), STACH(OVA),
I'm trying to get information's about them; I do have birth documents and
German release forms of my grand parents and my two aunts, which one was one
of the Hitler girls, died 10 years ago ( Teresa Illes/ova).

Please let me know if there is any possibility to get DNA test in MA and
track my Jewish family worldwide.
I appreciate your help
Sincerely,

Silvia

Re: KRAUS in Jewish Census Bohemia 1793 #austria-czech

Gabriela Svatos

Peter,

It probably is not safe to make this assumption. Are you sure that you have
the right Pocernice? There is one community of that name on the outskirts
of Prague...and the Prague Census for 1793 will not be published until the
end of this year.

Please note that the archivist in Prague mentioned that they plan to publish
censuses (sp) for subsequent years, once this cycle (1793) is completed.

Regards,
Gabi

ViewMate: Short Yiddish Translation #general

Jessica M <jess883@...>

Hello all,

My mother and I recently discovered some old family photographs, showing my
great-grandfather who was Polish.

Two of them have Yiddish writing on the back; unfortunately we can't translate it
as we are unable to read Hebrew script. There isn't much - just a few lines - but
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have scanned the back of the photos and they can be viewed here:
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6863

and here:

If anyone can help, please email me <jess883@...>. Thank you very much in
advance.

Need Help to write short note in Russian #general

Lisa

Dear Group,

Is there someone who would volunteer to translate a very short letter that I
wrote into Russian? I would like to mail it to a submitter of a Yad Vashem
testimony who I believe could be a part of my grandmother's family. (If someone
could write it and either scan it back to me or mail it to me, I would be so
appreciative).
Many thanks in advance,

Trying to Reunite Photos with Families #general

Janice Sellers <janice@...>

Dear Jewishgenners,

I spent a good part of my summer helping clear out my grandmother's apartment
after she had a stroke in June. In doing so, I came across many, many photos,
several of which are of other people's family members. I hope to reunite some of
these photos with their families.

My grandmother is Lillyan Esther (GORDON) MECKLER. She grew up in Manhattan,
Baltimore, and Brooklyn, and lived as an adult in Brooklyn, Miami, and Las Vegas.
My grandfather was Abe MECKLER, who died in 1989 in Florida. He grew up in
Brooklyn and lived as an adult in Brooklyn, Miami, and Las Vegas.

http://publications.seismosoc.org/~janice/NoahNash.jpg

My grandmother told me this is a photo of Noah Nash, a friend of my grandfather's.

http://publications.seismosoc.org/~janice/Finvers.jpg

On the back of this photo is written, "Sylvia's & Henry's (FINVER) children March
1954 Fran 5 1/2 Toni 8 mo."

http://publications.seismosoc.org/~janice/Jimmy.jpg

On the back of this is written, "To Lillyan >from Jimmie To a good Pal Lil Gordon
Jim." The photo is probably >from before 1940, as my grandmother married in 1939.

Please respond privately.

Thank you very much in advance for any help,
