MODERATOR NOTE: Our curiosity has been aroused. Why does a death in
1919,
or even in 1922, show up in the SSDI when Social Security didn't even
exist
at the time?

I think that there must be an error in the SSDI. Go to the SSDI search
engine at
www.ancestry.com and search for anyone with a death year of 1919 (leave all
other criteria blank).
The results (as of this posting) showed five people. One was born and died
the same day,
two died at less than 20 y/o, one was born in 1928 and died in 1919 and the
last was born in 1819.

Obviously there are errors in the data.

Re: social security speculations #general

...a death date would be in the system for years previous....

While "grandfathering" work history for benefits was certainly done, and
benefits paid to widows and dependent children, to find the death date of the
spouse in the files may be rough. Social Security always provided a "floor"
benefit for those who could not prove the required work history/tax payments,
but met the other requirements of age or disability. A widow might qualify
under her own account, so no date of death for her spouse would be in the
file. The SSDI is a listing of those who received a death benefit (a lump
sum paid upon death) and you are refering to survivor benefits. Still, a
request under the FOIA may get you some info. I would definately want Social
Security to say "no" than to have someone else say no.

I have a Polish address >from a letter dated 1941. The address reads,
Szlama Icek Rotblatt, 21 Wolynska St., Apt 35, Warsow, Poland. I am
looking for any suggestions as to how I might be able to use this

Anyone who was about to answer privetely the question above, please cc
the answer to me. I have the same question, mutatis mutandis, with
address
Berek ROTENSZTEJN, 12 Muranowska St, app. 20.
Though, >from studying the prewar Warsaw directories and city maps, I
suspect that this is a place where my grand-parents had to move to when
the Warsaw ghetto was walled in October-November 1940 and all Warsaw
jews forced to move inside it: at that time the population of the ghetto
was 240 000, in january 1941 it was 378 979, in may 1941 it was 430 000,
according to Ringelblum's "Notes >from the Warsaw Ghetto".

Inies/Ennis from Humenne #hungary

Terry Steinberg <ts714@...>

My grandmother was >from Humenne, my grandparents were married there,
and my mother and her siblings were born there. We do not know my
grandmother's maiden name and would greatly appreciate any info anyone
can give me regarding my family. Unfortunately, my mother is the only
one alive >from her immediate family and she left Europe when she was 3
or 4.

Grandfather- Tobias Inies (I think that was the name-later Ennis).
Originally >from Dobromil/Przemsyl in Poland/Ukraine. Went to Humenne
to be an apprentice baker, probably about 1893-1895.
Grandmother- Pepie ?
Married- 1897-1900
Pepie- born 1883 or 1884
Children- Raphael- born 1904-1905
Harry- born approx 1910
Ruth- born approx 1915
Anna (later Shirley- my mother)- born 1919

Tobias came to the U.S. about 1921, the rest of the family probably in
1924 (based on my mother's recollection and a search of ship voyages
on cimorelli.com.

Thanks,
Terry Steinberg

A woman named Diane has an incredibly useful site with many links, including
a large list of Hungarian genealogy terms translated into English; a sampler
to translate old Hungarian script into English letters; and lots more. I found
this site by searching another great one, put up by James Bogardi at a site
known as Radix, which is full of great links and data
