I was born and raised in the US.

I live in a place where there are many people from all over the world.  Many are from England and Scotland.  Several of them went to the same camp and in fact one or two of the residents were madrichim for others who were campers.

Finding Jews in Jamaican Archives - Sunday meeting #events #sephardic

contact@...

Jamaica has an important place in Sephardic history. In 1882 most of the
Jewish records were lost in a fire that destroyed a large part of Kingston,
the capital. For years this has been a huge barrier in researching not just
Jamaica but also the Caribbean and early community in the United States.
There are resources that can fill the gaps, but they are not well known and
sometimes difficult to access. Toni Pitock and Marina Delfos Harris discuss
the institutions that hold records, what is available and how to access
material.

Toni Pitock is a Board Member of the Jamaican Jewish Cemeteries Preservation
Fund (JJCPF). She holds a PhD in American history and teaches History and
Jewish Studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She has published
articles in Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography and American
Jewish History and is working on a manuscript that explores the economic
lives of Ashkenazi merchants and traders in colonial Philadelphia.

Marina Delfos Harris is a Board Member of the Jamaican Jewish Cemeteries
Preservation Fund (JJCPF) and founder of Falmouth Heritage Walks. Her
walking tour operated for 10 years (2011 - 2021) in the historic town of
Falmouth on Jamaica's north coast, and included tours of the over 200 year
old Falmouth Jewish cemetery, which she continues to maintain on behalf of
the United Congregation of Israelites.

The meeting is on Sunday 22 May 2022 at 11am in LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm
Paris/Amsterdam and 9pm Jerusalem. Patrons can join us on Zoom. The link is

I have seen very many reports of attendance at Jewish Summer camps in USA but none from UK.
Was/is this purely an American custom?

Doug Burrows

Hi all,
I tried to download the Rootsmagic app and although I finally managed that, I can’t, for the life of me fathom how to use it.
Due to my vision impairment, I don’t use a computer. I just use my iPad, but as you seem to have to plug into a computer, it will be a waste of time for me.
Anyone else have this problem?
Cheers

Jewish Refugees Tashkent WWII #general

Kate

Greetings to Everyone!

I have found four cards with names of my great grandparents, grandparents and my Mom in this data base. The card shows name and city they are coming from to Tashkent. There is no information on a place of birth and dob shows only the year. I wonder if one can use these cards to dig more information. Do you have any advice? I would like to learn where my great/grandparents were born. Is it possible to find out?

Re: Subject: ViewMate translation request – Yiddish #translation

Odeda Zlotnick

In genealogy the term "vital record" refers to Birth Marriage or Death registration.

What you posted on  ViewMate is "[...] writing in Yiddish is on the back of a card. On the other side is a picture of a family of 3."

There are actually few - if any - vital records in Yiddish. When you see do Hebrew characters on vital records (from Russia), the language is usually Hebrew, not Yiddish. Other vital records I've seen (from Galicia, or Austro-Hungary) may have a name in Hebrew characters, not much more.

I went to Emma Farm in Harmony, Pa and Kadimah near Evans City in the 1950s.. These were near Pittsburgh. There was also a Jewish camp in West Virgina in the 50s. I believe that was run by Young Judea. In 1959 I went to Camp Bnai Brith in Starlight, Pa. My sister was a camper and counselor at Tel Yehuda in Northeastern Pa.in the late 1940s.

I am looking for a Nathan Phillips from London, born about 1830 according to census records.  I have found one about the right age who died in 1912.  His tombstone is pictured in FindAGrave.  Could someone please translate his Hebrew name for me?
