Re: POZNIAK and KRUL families from Benitsa, Belarus / Lithuania #belarus #lithuania

Amit,

Is this the town?

https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp

Byenitsa, Беніца, Bienica, Benitsa populated place 54°21' N 26°33' E G Belarus 51.3 miles NW of Minsk 53°54' N 27°34' E

It seems this is a hamlet in the region of Minsk.  Currently about 138 residents.
https://mapcarta.com/13606130

I am also searching a very tiny "town" that today is in Poland (Daliowa / Daljowa.)  I have found it impossible to find any records for my tiny town or the people that lived there.

The only thing I can suggest is to try searching at The JewishGen Unified Databases for each variation of the town name.  Byenitsa,  Bienica, and Benitsa
https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/all/

Do the same at databases such as www.familysearch.org and Ancestry.com
You can put the town name in the birth field and leave everything else blank.  That's something that works well with small towns.

Re: Jewish Summer Camps #usa

Jenny Schwartzberg

Dear All,

I went to Camp Marimeta (for girls) and my brother went to Camp Menominee (for boys) in the 1970s, located outside Eagle River, Wisconsin (in the far north of Wisconsin).  Both were run by the Wasserman family of Chicago.  I had not realized until checking their websites just now that Menominee was founded in 1928 and Marimeta in 1947. They were run by a Jewish family for children of Jewish families but were secular.  I remember that Shabbat candles were lit in the dining hall with brief prayers but otherwise I really do not remember any other sign of Judaism other that we were all Jewish.  I went there for 6 summers and enjoyed it.  Afterwards I went for 3 summers to Camp Harand, a theater camp founded by two Jewish sisters, Pearl and Sulie Harand, but otherwise no sign of Judaism though there were a lot of Jewish campers.  At that point, it was located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin but is now in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

All three camps still exist and are run by descendants of the original families.

Earlier in my family history, my great-grandfather Joseph J. Cohen founded two summer camps for the children of anarchist families, many of whom were Jewish, Camp Germinal, Jamison, Pennsylvania from 1926 to 1934 and Camp Sharon, at Mohegan Lake, New York, from 1928 to 1931 or so.  My grandparents, Emma Cohen Gilbert and Richard V. Gilbert were also involved with both camps.

I don’t know if these camps fall within the rubric for the researcher, but I would be curious to exchange memories and stories with anyone familiar with them.

Yours,

Jenny Schwartzberg

Re: Jewish Summer Camps #usa

TERRY MANASSEE

I was a counselor at Camp IHC from 1970-1976 in Honesdale, PA. The Ezersky's owned the camp then.   It was called Indian Head Camps , they recently changed the name.  When arriving in the town of Honesdale there was a wooden sign with slats of all the camps.  They were all Jewish camps and had to be around 20 of them.  (B'nai Brith, Starlight, Ramah, to name a few).  On Wednesdays we played sports intercamp with them.  Either our girls camp would go to the other camp and their boys camp would come to ours or visa versa.  On Friday nights we would have a Shabbot service.  Sundays were bagels and lox for breakfast.  I am from Denver, Colorado.  When I was a kid, I attended the Jewish Community Center day camp and then the Jewish Community Center Ranch Camp which was a sleep-a-way camp.

Re: Did you go to a Jewish summer camp? #usa

Ann Adenbaum

I went to Camp Dunmore for Girls in Salisbury, Vt from 1966-1969. It was owned by George and Sylvia Frey Ross from Brooklyn who were school teachers. Most campers were Jewish. The food was served kosher style with no pork or mixing “milk and meat” and we had services on Friday nights.

my mother went to the same camp 1934-1938. Then it was owned by the Jacobsons who were from Mt Vernon, NY where my mother lived. At the time Sylvia Frey was the head counselor. I have pictures from my mom’s camp experience. True treasures.

During COVID a group that went to Camp Dunmore reconnected for monthly Zoom calls! A lot of great reminiscing!

Translator keeps busy; air raid sirens blast. #yizkorbooks #ukraine

Laurence Broun

The translator for the Ukrainian-language version of the Yizkor Book of Mizoch reported a rocket strike Saturday, 15 miles north of his home in Rivne, Ukraine. Ten people were injured. Despite the chaos, last week Professor Aladko submitted translations for five additional chapters of the Yizkor Book of Mizoch, https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Mizoch/Mizochu.html . With his colleague history professor Roman Mykhalchuk, the translations are used to document local holocaust history and in programs to fight racism, xenophobia and antisemitism.

Refugees in Rivne are mostly settled and are being fed, he reports. Some refugees from Kyiv and central Ukraine are returning home. Aladko urges everyone to continue supporting the established major NGOs.

(The English-language version of this Yizkor Book is at https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Mizoch/Mizoch.html and is being translated by university students from across the U.S. Professors Aladko and Mykhalchuk continue to provide expertise to advise the U.S. student translators regarding local geography and institutions.)

Re: Seeking descendants of a Dr. Rachkovsky or Rotzkovski or Radkovski (or similar) of Haifa #holocaust

Odeda Zlotnick

Focusing on the signature, there is a clear difference between the Dalet of Dr. and the second letter of the name, which seems to me be a Tzadi.
Always important to keep in mind that in the 1950's, people did not necessarily fill the POT forms, they only signed.

So, I searched graves.me for Ratskovsky, in Hebrew, in the general area of Haifa.
Found a Bertold Ratskovsky
And he was a Dr - you can see it on his gravestone.

Wondered if this could lead you further.

Are you aware that you can ask Yad VaShem to correct information that was transcribed incorrectly?

Hello,
I came across this note and wondered if such a list exists? Where can I find it?
I'm related to the Userovici family and David Family. Both from Dorohoi, and such a list will be very helpful in my attempts to learn about our ancestors.

Thank you,

Help interpreting info from all Galicia gatabase #galicia

Wendy Griswold

Hi, I apologize for asking an unsophisticated question. Trying to get the hang of this.

I'm looking at the Przensyl State Archive Fond 154 scan for Zurawno, Jewish Marriages. 1901.
I find on scan 6 Drucker Gicie 1901 Blatt 83 Postzahl 13. And above her name something that looks like Tom III

I find on scan 7 Ellner Szulem Shlomo, Blatt 83 Postzahl 13, also 1901.
So have I found  the marriage of my putative great uncle Schulem Ellner and his wife Gittel/Gussie Drucker?
Is that a logical assumption?

I have the names confirmed and to the best of my knowledge their first child was born in Zurawno in 1902.
If not, can the blatt and postzahl information be helpful in any way?

Thank you!

Seeking descendants of a Dr. Rachkovsky or Rotzkovski or Radkovski (or similar) of Haifa #holocaust

fredelfruhman

I am hoping to make contact with the descendants of someone who submitted Pages of Testimony to Yad Vashem.

These pages were submitted, in Hebrew, in the year 1956, by a person living at Rechov Yosef 1 in Haifa.

On the Yad Vashem website, the name of the submitter is transcribed from the Hebrew as "Dr. B. Rachkovsky".  To me, the second letter of the name looks like it could be a Tzadi, so it might have been something like Rotzkvosky.  Or, the second letter might be a Daled, thus Radkovsky?

Any leads to descendants of this Dr. B. R____sky of Haifa would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
