Immigration from Palestine in the 19th C #israel

Stuart

I learned that my great uncle emigrated from Jerusalem in 1878 based on a US passport application he filled out many years later.  I have tried to find databases from the Ottoman era and Israel.  The application said he came on a ship from Jaffa but did not name the ship.  I assume there was an intermediate stop. I was looking at the Hamburg passenger lists and similar databases having difficulty verifying.  Is anyone familiar with emigration from 19th C Jerusalem to Europe and the US or can point me in a direction?

Thank you.

Re: agencies Aiding WW2 Survivors #records

DOes anyone know if OSE  "Œuvre de secours aux enfants"  (Childrens Aid Society) is still in existence?

I found a document in the archives of  'Beit Lohamei HaGetaot' in Israel, showing that OSE provided aid for my 2 year old brother in Wloclawek in 1946. There may be other information at OSE about the family and I wonder who has actual possession of the OSE/Poland documents from that period.

And a related question, what other charities operated in Poland after the war who may have given aid to returning survivors, and is their archive searchable?

Many thanks,
Relly Coleman

I have photos of my father and uncle at Camp Pokanoket and at Stissing Lake Camp during the 1920's. I think they were in New York, north of the City. Would love to hear from anyone who has information about either camp.

University of Washington students build expertise in Yizkor Book translation #translation #yizkorbooks

Laurence Broun

Last week at the University of Washington in Seattle, students Ofir Horovitz, Noa Etzyon and Eiden Brewer attended the university's Undergraduate Research Symposium to share lessons learned from their work translating the Yizkor Book of Mizoch. Their work has been done under the supervision of Professor Naomi Sokoloff, chair of the Near Eastern Languages and Civilization department. "I am so proud of them," said Sokoloff, "and I saw that lots of people were gathered around their poster and interested in the project."

These three students are among ten students and faculty at University of Washington contributing to the Yizkor Book project. Working as a team, Horovitz, Etzyon and Brewer translated four chapters, including the heartrending essay The Horrible Days

Other chapters have been translated from the original Hebrew text by students at George Washington University in DC, and from Yiddish by a student at the University of Texas in Austin.

Oleszyce - Schwartz Family from this town #poland #romania

Jacob Walzer

Hi,
Anyone in the group have any connection to the city Oleszyce? Or to the Schwartz family in this town?

My Paternal grandfather's mother was Malka Mala,
The daughter of Nachmon Walzer and Chaja Rachel Schwartz. I did find them on jripoland.  It seems like they had many children.
Malka Mala married Yitzchok Meir Berg. And they lived in Moscicka.
I did find her name as well with her children's birth.
But I'm trying to find more information on the Schwartz family and the Walzer family.
I only got back as far as her parents.
My late grandfather Chanina Walzer,  survived the war.
He kept his mother's maiden name Walzer.
So that's why we use the name Walzer.

I've also met Walzer's but I so far couldn't connect to see if they were originally from there. Since they are from Romania. But I was told that they may have moved there before the first war.

If anyone has any information for me I'd appreciate it very much.

All the best,
Jacob Walzer

Unfortunately, incoming passenger lists only survive for voyages originating outside Europe / the Mediterranean: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/passengers

A small number of aliens' registration cards have survived for the period 1918-1957: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/aliens-registration-cards-1918-1957. There are also records of enemy aliens who were interned: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/internees (unlikely to apply in your father's case).

Naturalisation would have been required for a British passport. Records are available up until 1986: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/naturalisation-british-citizenship.

Offering Mt. Carmel Cemetery photos (Queens, NY) #photographs #usa

A. E. Jordan

I am starting to plan a photo trip to Mt. Carmel Cemetery A few people are asking about Mt Zion in Glendale. Queens, NY so if the weather continues to improve I am happy to make a trip there to get photos.

Process I follow is fairly simple in offering to take photos for people.

You ID the grave from the cemetery's online database and send me the details. I take a photo and email it to you and in turn I appreciate a few dollars to help defer the expense of doing this for everyone, ie gasoline money.

I am happy to help out where I can, but please don't send me a generic name and ask me to find the person at the cemetery and please don't send me around the cemetery to find the 20 people named Jack Cohen because one of them might possibly be your long lost cousin. The cemetery is massive and a few people have asked me to do that and it is a very slow process that takes a lot of time and gasoline, etc.

Also if you are asking for an infant or child's grave please tell me. They are mostly in separate areas of the plots and a lot of those graves do not have markers.

Mount Zion has an online database. It is better if you search the name on their database versus the commercial Find a Grave because the position information and data is better at the cemetery's page.

Feel free to ask me questions via email and ask about other NYC area cemeteries because I will visit most of them as the summer progresses. There's a few I do not go to because of distance or safety issues.

Please respect the discussion group and send your specific requests to me privately by replying to this email or my email address aejordan at aol dot com.

My father came to the UK at the age of 16 from Danzig Poland in 1936. Two questions, are there any shipping records? and did you have to become naturalized to get a British passport?

The Hebrew text gives us no reason to assume the name is Brockheimer and not Bruckheimer.

Plot 14,  Row 10 -- though the translation won't help anyone who is searching for the physical grave, since the plot and row will be identified in the graveyard by their Hebrew letters.

Has anyone ever heard of a, "Hebrew Reformatory" in Plainview, NY?  I have notes from a relative who stated that his brother was sent to the reformatory in about 1908 because he stole something from a pushcart.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
