You can do a Freedom of Information request to the National Archives to open a naturalisation file that is currently closed. There is a form for this on their website. However, the onus is on you to say what you are looking for from these records e.g. names, addresses, places they were at before the UK, places they were living in in UK, occupations pre and post UK, names of family members etc.

Search of Kamenetsky's from Bessarabia #bessarabia

kamnzky@...

Hello. My name is Katerina Kamenetsky.
I'm looking for information about my grandfather Kamenetsky Mark Pavlovich. He was born in 1913 in the village Tsaul (formerly called village Gorodichul) of the Tarnovo region of Moldova. Over the years, this village belonged to the Khotinsky, Yassky, Balti and Soroca counties.
His parents are Pavel Markovich Kamenetsky and Lyubov Gershonovna. Unfortunately, I only know these names as they appear on my grandfather's birth certificate.
My grandfather had three brothers, I don't know their names yet. My father worked at a sugar factory (sugar beet processing) as an agronomist (beet grower).

Mark Kamenetsky (my grandfather) graduated from the gymnasium in town Soroca in 1931. In 1940-41. worked as an elementary school teacher in the village of Denzhany, Oknitsa district. Their relatives, the Weisman family and the Perelman family, lived in the village of Zguritsa. We assume that the surname Perelman is the maiden name of Lyubov Gershonovna.
During the Holocaust, my grandfather's parents and brothers died in the Transnistrian ghetto or on the way there.
Since the Weissman and Perelman families were in the Bershad ghetto, I assume that the Kamenetsky family was also there. Mark Kamenetsky wasn't a ghetto prisoner. He was mobilized into the labor army, and in 1942 he was evacuated to the Sverdlovsk region. According to the stories of his relatives, he was an invalid from childhood, he limped.
After the war, he, his wife and children, returned to live in Moldova, maintained relations with the survived relatives Vaisman and Perelman. I also keep in touch with some of them now.
I would be grateful for any help and tips in finding information about our Kamenetskys. I also expect answers from the Red Cross organization and the Chisinau archive.

I am sending this photos of my grandfather Mark Kamenetsky and the Weissman family. Sheiva Weissman (Perelman) - the sister of Lyuba Kamenetskaya (Mark's mother)
Best regards, Katerina Kamenetsky

A correction to a sentence I wrote in my earlier message on this thread. I had written:
"Of course, even without this update, the scans of the index book are available on the All Galicia Database, for Gesher Galicia members who are logged into the site to view."
The scans of the book (the Żurawno marriage index book 1901-1936) are not on the All Galicia Database, but instead are available - for Gesher Galicia members only - as link from our online inventory, which is at: www.geshergalicia.org/inventory/ .

A food history of Manhattan’s Lower East Side #usa

Bruce Drake

I thought this article would be of interest here, because so many ancestors of Jews who came to the city lived on the Lower East Side and food — what they ate and the names of places they ate at — would ring a bell with many and provide context for the lives they lived. I gleaned a few leads for my own family.

Matzeva for a plot in Lodz cemetery #lodz

rosibal

I was wondering how to go about ordering and installing a matzeva in the Lodz Jewish Cemetery. I'm asking on behalf of a relative whose grandmother is buried there and for which no marker exists (died January 1939). I already know the plot location.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Maybe some of you had done this.

Thank you in advance,

ViewMate Translation Request -- German #translation

jedbrickner@...

A have a  challenging question. Pasted below is a Viewmate link to  two birth deeds written, I am told, in Alsatian German. I am hopeful that one of them is the record of the birth of my 3x great grandfather who was known in 1805 as Simon (and in 1808 as Simon Meyer). The date of his birth was 15 Frimaire XIV (6 December 1805). If you can easily tell me that *neither* of these is correct, that would be helpful. If one of them is correct than a translation of as much as possible would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Caroline,

Thank you very much for providing these links.

I have used the reading aid you shared and found the following file https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11047859

I see that the file is closed until 2097. Is there a way to change this and make it available earlier?

Given there is a naturalization application (the document above) why can I not locate a certificate for this person?

I have found records proving that this person died in England on 12-Feb-1978 (included in the UK death index for Q1/1978 & probate calendar of 1980)

Thank you,
