Sandy Korn

I guess it has been a while since I have been on this site!
Your relatives do not seem to be related at first, but I will have to dig.
I can find no record that I can actually confirm with for Julius Korn is his marriage in 1922 or 1923 to Olive Levy in Youngstown, Oh. According to a census, he entered the USA in 1905, but he can't be found until his marriage.  Ugh!
Thanks David!

Servants, Masters and Families. African and Eurafrican Jews in 17th Century Amsterdam #announcements #sephardic

How did the Portuguese Jews in Early Modern Amsterdam relate to African
slaves, servants, and non-white community members? Mark Ponte will share the
history of black people in Sephardic households during the Dutch Golden Age.
One example, Hanna Vas was a black slave who had children with Moses
Moreno-Monsanto, and later married him. Moses wrote four Wills, testifying
to the complexity of the situation. Who were the black people involved in
the life of the Portuguese Jewish community, what was their place in the
family, and what is their legacy?

Mark Ponte is a historian working on Early Modern migration and slavery in
Amsterdam and the Dutch Atlantic. He works part-time at the Amsterdam City
Archives, including on the project 'Alle Amsterdamse Akten'. In recent years
he has mainly published on Black Amsterdammers in the 17th Century. He was a
researcher and author for the exhibition Black in Rembrandt's Time in the
Rembrandt House Museum (2020) and created the exhibition 'Amsterdammers and
Slavery' (2021) was a research fellow at the Mauritshuis Museum. He
regularly writes contributions for (public) historical books and magazines.

The meeting is on Sunday 12 June 2022 at 11am in LA, 2pm NYC, 7pm London,
8pm Paris/Amsterdam, and 9pm Jerusalem. Patrons can join us on Zoom. The

Translated into English:
Dear Yefim!
The Volga Word (possibly newspaper), which you already wrote about, I have been following since January 3, but in the Volga Word for # 15, I did not find what I was looking for. Soon many numbers of the Volga Word will be delivered to us and I will try to dig and find. Today we have again (not clear). I'll write more later.
It is clearly visible on the postal seal: The city of Balakovo

David Birnbaum

I have posted 3 snippets from the wedding register of Husiatyn at Viewmate VM98803, VM98804 and VM98805 that relate to the registration of the wedding my ancestors Joseph Lewittes and Chancie some 32 years after they actually married. The word in VM98803 (Insasse) has been solved (thank you Jonathan Michael Wien!). But I am left with trying to understand Chancie's status. In VM98805 she appears as geb. Ellenbogen. In VM98804 she appears as daughter of Eisig Lewittes (same family name as her husband!). Is this an error? Was her mother an Ellenbogen and father a Lewittes? The three letters I can't male out in VM98805 may help solve the mystery....

Any help  is much  appreciated!

Re: "Hints" and "alerts" and "isicoveries"from commercial genealogical sites #general

Professor Ryesky

I, too, have gotten such "alerts" and similar solicitations.  One I recently received obviously had somewhere along the line been copied from my own tree because it referred to the same nonexistent person I had placed on my tree.

{Even before the days of the Internet as we know it, I was using such desinformatziya as nonexistent persons, intentionally misspelled names (including my own), and even my son's pet guinea pig to see who was selling mailing lists to whom.  On one occasion, my wife and I got a shnor from the political campaign of a subsequently-disgraced (and recently deceased) New York State legislator; the unique misspelling of our name was the same as the one we used for our subscription to a certain Brooklyn-based weekly tabloid aimed at the worldwide Jewish community.}.

Re: "Hints" and "alerts" and "isicoveries"from commercial genealogical sites #general

The ability for one to copy branches and entire trees into their own tree without verification and without proper citation of the source of this information is one of the most annoying things I find in commercial genealogical sites.  I've been hit with so many matches that were based on my original tree, copied by others. Worse than that - several years after uploading my tree, I corrected some family connections based on some new information I received, but my original tree has been circulating in those databases without any way to correct it. I corrected it in my own tree, but since the incorrect information it is now in probably hundreds of other people's trees, it cannot be corrected and in reality, it became a fact.
For these reasons, I am very careful at using information found in other people's online trees. I try to verify the facts in any way I can, try to contact the submitters/owners for more details (most don't respond and those who do, tell me they copied it from another online tree) and add a detailed note in my own tree about the fact that the source of information is unknown.

Such companies also provide their subscribers easy methods of copying a branch or a whole tree to their own one, based on a single match, whether correct or suspicious. This may make some of these subscribers happy, as their tree may grow to 100,000 persons in less than a week effort,

But, the owners of the copied trees are than flooded by useless "Match Discovery" messages, asking them to accept / reject information that is a simple copy of the original one.

As one of my colleagues once stated "Life is too short to handle such match discoveries".

CAHJP Record Question - Rabbi Markus Mordke ROSEN #galicia #israel #rabbinic #austria-czech

Aaron Slotnik

Hello Genners,

Thanks to the recent poster who noted that some CAHJP records have been indexed and placed online, I found what appears to be an extremely important record to my research (Applicant: Rosen (Birnbaum), Markus Mordke; born 29.12.1881 in Jagielnica; married | item NNL_CAHJP004891577 | The National Library of Israel (  It seems to be some sort of 'application' in Vienna dated May 11, 1938.

Unfortunately, I'm located in Chicago and seemingly won't be able to access the actual document online given this message on the webpage: "Due to restrictions related to copyright, this item is only viewable from within the National Library building."

Does anyone know more about this series, document, what it may consist of, and how I may be able to acquire a copy?  Sadly, Rabbi Rosen was killed in Buchenwald in November, 1939 (Central DB of Shoah Victims' Names (

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Apollo movie theatre, WARSAW #poland #general

Vernon Kronenberg

The story about Warsaw's cinemas has been told by eminent Warsaw historian Jerzy S. Majewski in his new book 'Historia warszawskich kin' (History of Warsaw’s Cinemas).
Unfortunately, I have checked and this book does not appear to be available in Australian libraries; nor do I read Polish. The only Jerzy Majewski book available
is the famous D & K guidebook to Poland.
I am only interested - genalogically - in the Apollo Kino theatre, which is mentioned in the book.
I would be most grateful if anybody who has a copy, or who has access to a copy, would get in touch.
