Re: German Jews incarcerated in England/Scotland during WW2 #holocaust #germany

The story in my family was that my uncle (Erich Fritz Hein) was interned in the UK at first, but was then sent to Canada (specifically Prince Edward Island) for the duration.  I've never been able to confirm that there was actually a camp for German internees in PEI, although I know there were camps in Ontario and Quebec.  And I have lived my entire life in Canada.

My father (Georg Franz Hein), on the other hand, at the outbreak of hostilities (Sept 3/39) committed identity theft, taking the name of a dead London classmate (Peter Stevens), and enlisted in the Royal Air Force.  He would become the only German-Jewish bomber pilot in the RAF, flying 22 combat missions in 1941 before his plane was hit by flak over Berlin and he force-landed (out of fuel) in a farmer's field near Amsterdam.  So began 3 years and 8 months of captivity in his own country, without any protection whatsoever under the Geneva Convention.  Had the Nazis ever discovered his true identity, the consequences would have been unpleasantly fatal.  Dad went on to make 9 escape attempts as a POW, became Head of Contacts (i.e. scrounging) for the "X" Escape Organization in Stalag Luft 3 East Compound, and was one of only 69 members of the RAF to be awarded Britain's Military Cross for gallantry in the face of the enemy on the ground.  Mentioned in over 20 books, including the biography I wrote.

My Brown (Brin) family of Edinburgh looked after the Hirsch children from Dessau (Gerhard and Madeline) who escaped on the Kindertransport from Berlin in 1939, where they had been at boarding school.

Many German Kindertransport children went to live at a farm school near Edinburgh called Whittinghame,  as outlined in "The Forgotten Kindertransportees, the Scottish Experience" by Frances Williams published in 2014 by Bloomsbury Books (I understand this was her Phd thesis).

The label of this "patronymic" field in this context should be "Full Hebrew/Yiddish Name including Patronymic".

Hi Jake,

A good place to start is Rachel Pistol's book Internment during the Second World War : a comparative study of Great Britain and the USA (2017.)

The Association of Jewish Refugees' oral history project 'Refugee Voices' has an entire section of refugees who were interned:

You can search the USHMM Collections Search catalog,, for more materials about internment in the UK.

You might like to check out Family Tree 10. I've been using both the iPad and Mac versions for a while and found it OK. Its quite a comprehensive and powerful piece of software and I think it will do what you want, consequentially however there is usually quite a lot of information displayed on the iPad screen so you could find it a bit daunting and fiddly to start with. Hope this helps.

Town named Chernastra/Cherustra/Cherna in Russian Empire #russia #ukraine

My grandfather listed Chernastra (also spelled Cherustra) in Russia as his birthplace around the turn of the 20th century. Other family members list the city as Cherna. His father last lived in a place called Podolsk.

My initial thoughts are that Cherna is Chernyy Ostrov, which was in the Russian district of Kamenets Podolskiy.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

In my family tree, I have numerous instances in US censuses from the early 1900s, where the siblings of a wife were listed as boarders. It could appear at first that they are unrelated to either the husband or wife, if the maiden surname of the wife was unknown.

I've also occasionally seen where a cousin or brother-in-law is listed as a lodger or boarder. I have one instance in my tree where a widowed mother listed her three adult daughters as boarders.

There is a Facebook group called 'Jewish DNA for Genetic Genealogy and Family Research', who can help with advice on how to proceed in learning about your biological grandfather. They have files on how to get started, and also on how to handle some of the more complex issues that come up in these situations.

It is through your close DNA matches that you will be able to zero in on who your grandfather might be, or at least zero in on the family in which he was a member. It is your close DNA matches who are 100% Ashkenazi Jewish who are relevant here. And since you tested on AncestryDNA, those close matches who have family trees are the most useful ones to you.

Good luck.

Genealogy software for iPad #general

What is the best software for me to use with an iPad?  I am visually impaired and that’s why I use an iPad. I have a subscription to Ancestry and another to MyHeritage. There are over 600 people in the trees. I’d like the software to be able to:
Share the trees with other people
Create or publish a report for my grandchildren
Keep all the information in one place including sources, photos and stories
Thank you so much for your advice,

Residentail search
Last visited a relative around 1950
address was 36 Pasqet Dr
Norwalk Conn
attempted to find house while on vacation and could not find house
Woke up and viewed 1959 US CENSUS and confirmed address.
Spent an hour at the street and could not find #36.
Have contacted numerous norwalk agencies and they show no record of #36 that highest home number
is 30.
Spke to various agencies and so far cannot find a #36.
The engineering dept indicated that a road was added in the same area and created a new street, something
like Sasgret ? Pond Rd.
If the home is still up was a two story white home with 2 car garage on left and a porch on the right side.
That is my memory going back over 70 years.
A cousin recalls a pond in the back
The home was set back a great distance in 1950.
The owners were John Taylor and Zelda Bloom Taylor
Zelda was in charge at CR Gibson that perhaps was sold out and then failed about 5 years ago.
There were very few homes in this beutiful area 72 years ago.
Any help on this strange omission will be highly appreciated

The Scottish Holocaust-era Study Centre at the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre also has information
about many Jewish refugees who came to Scotland at that time and about experiences of
internment in the Isle of Man and elsewhere.

Re: The Yiddish female name Yechil #yiddish #names #unitedkingdom

This was my first understanding of the record too but I don't think it is correct. If you look at the way the groom's name and patronymic are listed it's pretty clear that he is Abraham son of Aharon and likewise she is Yechil daughter of Shmuel, it's just recorded in a confusing way.

Diane Jacobs said she was looking for information about German-born Jews who were locked up in some kind of internment camps in Great Britain early in WW2.   I would look at this site:  The Isle of Mann Museum.  In the inquiry box I put in World War ll and came up with  21925 results for World War ll

Thank you. I was able to see with my account. Regarding restricted records, I think there are different levels. For some American ones, I was able to go to my library, which is I guess an affilaite center, and log in there and see on my own laptop. I do not know if international agreements vary or what.

If you have the URL of where the image should be, you may be able to put ina request. For the requests that I've put in and they've been able to honor (not all, due to agreements), they've been pretty quick sending the file. This is the link for the request form:

Thank you again and good luck to you too, Michaele!

Re: Request for Old Photos from Dubno #photographs #ukraine #poland

Still seeking old photos (1880-1947) from Dubno, Ukraine (formerly Poland, earlier Russian Empire). I am looking for photos of:

1. Single portraits and family groups, 1-20 people (outdoors if possible). Photos showing girls or women preferred (I have already received photos showing men and boys).
2. Non-family groups, such as a class, Zionist group, factory workers, professional group, or just people at work or play. Photos showing girls or women preferred.
3. The Jewish part of town, with Jewish buildings such as synagogues, study houses, marketplace, shops, houses, schools, etc. Old postcards may be used.
4. Modern photos of the old Jewish area, where some old structures remain. Or a panorama or aerial view of the town.

This book is a volunteer project, so I cannot offer payment, but for any images used, you will receive a prominent image credit. Images must be in good focus, but do not have to be in perfect condition. I may even be able to repair fading, rips, blotches and other problems, making your photo more useful to you.

If you have old photos, please don’t send them yet. Write to me at artstop@... for instructions on how to scan them in high resolution, or re-photograph them.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Many thanks in advance for your kind help!
Nina Schwartz
NOTE: I have already researched, or gotten some good Creative Commons images from, sites like Wikipedia, Virtual Shtetl, Shtetl Routes, USHMM, Yad Vashem, National Museum of Poland, etc.—no need to recommend them.

For questions like definitions of terms seen on census forms, the first place to look is the “Instructions to Enumerators”.  You can find the 1910 instructions at:  Boarders are “persons eating and sleeping at the same place”.   “On the other hand, transient boarders or lodgers, at hotels or elsewhere, should not be enumerated at their temporary rooming or lodging place unless it is practically certain that they will not be enumerated anywhere else.  This refers to persons rooming or lodging for a short time at a hotel or boarding or lodging house or with a private family while temporarily absent from their usual places of abode.” ... “But transient boarders or lodgers who have no permanent home or usual place of abode should be enumerated where they happen to be stopping a the time of the census.”  (paragraphs 53, 54, 55 of instructions)   Joel Weintraub, Dana Point, CA
