DNA help #dna

Lee Jaffe

Can anyone recommend good sources for posing questions about DNA research?  I don't see a many DNA questions come through this group, so I wondered whether there was another, better, venue to address these issues.  I'm not a Facebook user so the resources there are not available to me.

I found that JewishGen has a DNA Testing mailing list, to which I've subscribed.  But the link to the group's info page – where I'd hope to find instructions, perhaps the mailing address or the archives – looks to be an ad for FamilyTreeDNA.  If someone is familiar with that mailing list and can point me to a better source, that would be a helpful source.

Other suggestions about places i can post questions and hear back from interested and informed members would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee David Jaffe

Awesome Properties

Dear researchers,
I am researching Chaim Moskovic/ Moshkowitz born c. 1845 ,from Husztkoz, Hungary now Nonkovo Ukraine.
His daughter was Leah , born c. 1865 . Leah married Mayer Leib  /Leb Teszler from Birsanif/ Barsana Romania. Leah is buried in Sighet, Romania.
I'd love to find more info on Chaim and Leah but can't find anything on Jewishgen other than Leah's burial record. Any ideas of where or how to find more info is appreciated.

How do I get original record image from JewishGen? #records #ukraine

barbara@...

I found a birth record listed in JwishGen that may be my grandfather, Jacob Brodetsky. The record is for Yakov Brudetsky.  Born 1886, Odessa, Ukraine. The only information is an image number: 2696 and a source SOAF. Is it possible to obtain an image of the original record? If so how do I go about doing that?

Thank you so much for your help,
Barbara

Shaun,

Therese Cejka arrived NYC 1889, age 20, from Austria, going to NY.  Manifests from that time frame given little info.

Do you know her married surname?  The name of her husband?  That info will help in finding other records for Therese.

If you find out the names of Therese's parents than that will help you in searching other records from her town of birth.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Re: Searching for Riuva/Rivka/Sonia Levine or Levine #russia #belarus

AC,

Do you know the name of Riuva / Sonia's father?

Her father's name could be on her tombstone, or on her marriage record or death record.

Did she naturalize?  That document may provide further info.

Check city directories for the town she lived in Ireland for the time period of 1928 (before and after.)  If she is listed than you can compare her address to that of other people named Levine.  If she lived with her parents or siblings than you may get a clue there.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Hi Shaun,
Do you have more information?  For instance, what was the date of her arrival into the US and which port?
If the manifest said she was from Austria it could have meant that she was from anywhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (including Galicia).
Do you know her parents' names?

I'm not even sure she was Jewish, but every time I've searched her name it led me to JewishGen (we had always assumed she was Protestant as she left my grandfather in a Protestant orphanage in the 1930s in Northern Ireland when he was 6 years old and he never really spoke about her).
Which other orphanages were there in Northern Ireland at the time?  Did she have any other choice?

Apparently "Goumin" is Ihumen in Yiddish?
Igumen was a district in the Minsk province.

Surname Burgess (anglicized) / Burgeois (gallicized), original name Burgo #sephardic #latinamerica #names

Vi Burgo

I’m tracing a surname in my family and need help with the origins. When anglicized it’s “Burgess” and other variations. When gallicized it’s “Burgeois” and other variations. I traced this name and found Burgo with variations. Burgess and Burgo have the same meaning: from the city. This is why I believe it's the original name or an older version of the name. Does anyone have these surnames or can tell me more information?

According to this book, "DICIONÁRIO SEFARADI de SOBRENOMES Inclusive Cristãos-novos, Conversos, Marranos, Italianos, Berbères e sua Historia na Espanha, Portugal e Itália", Burgo comes from Smyrna. I tried finding information on Sephardis in Smyrna before the Spanish exiling and I’m not finding much information. Please share with me what you know, thanks!

The Becker's Email

I saw your family tree on Ancestry.  There is a Pollack-Kronick Family Tree on Ancestry and the owner who lives in the US references Albert's death certificate and lists Albert's mother as Mary.  He does not show any siblings other than Emma in his tree.  I suggest you contact the owner just listed as vjlp1062.  Evidently he does a lot of DNA research and may be able to help you.

Santa Cruz Jewish Genealogy Society  invites you to

 Speaker: Dr. Alexander Beider, PhD

 Researching Eastern European Jewish Surnames

Sunday July 17, 1pm Pacific Time/ 4pm Eastern

Guest RSVP:

Free to Members, $5.00 to Guests

Description:   A large majority of Jews of the Russian Empire received their family names only about 200 years ago.  In contrast with many other Ashkenazim, the whole surnaming process was managed internally within Jewish communities, with marginal participation by Christian clerks. The names adopted in the Russian Empire reflect a panorama of Jewish life at the beginning of the 19th century including: languages used and their peculiarities, occupations, given names, and places of settlement.

Some surnames provide information about ancestors who lived well before the 19th century. This is the case of surnames revealing Jewish “castes” (Cohanim, Levites), those belonging to rabbinical dynasties, and those of other migrants from Central Europe, as well as a small group of names of Sephardic origin. Because of the Ashkenazic tradition of naming children after deceased close relatives , certain surnames based on given names (patronymics or matronymics) can provide information linking us to those who lived in the Middle Ages.

Bio: Alexander Beider holds one doctoral degree in applied mathematics (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology) and another in Jewish Studies (Sorbonne, Paris). He uses onomastics and linguistics as tools to unravel the history of the Jewish people. He has written a series of reference books dealing with the etymology of Ashkenazic and Sephardic surnames and Ashkenazic given names, all published by Avotaynu Inc. (1993-2019). His book “Origins of Yiddish Dialects,” published by Oxford University Press (2015), sheds light on the early stages of the development of Yiddish. Beider was born in Moscow and currently lives in Paris.
