I have just recently learned that my grandfather, PINCUS LISHINSKY,
lived in these two places during his childhood. I have not been able
to find out much about these two communities and wonder if anyone can
suggest a source for more information please. Thank you for any
suggestions. I also would like to find a photo.

I contacted MyHeritage support - looks like they've fixed it.

And when you click on fullscreen, you can scroll through all pages - I had one dossieer with 23 pages I could scroll through all.

A second recommendation: search for all the names in each questionnaire - I've seen correspondence from a person mentioned on one questionnaire appear in the file for other family memebers.

Heartbreaking to see "We all want to leave together; as quicly as possible" when you know some of them eventually died in camps.

Dr. Jacob Altman's office was in Manhattan.

A New York Daily News article about the murder is attached (20 Oct 1981, page 5).

A possible source of information on the crime:

His grave and his wife's (Helen) are pictured on FindAGrave:

Re: DNA matches by country #dna

Bob Smiley

In your DNA matches in Ancestry, do a search, and enter the country in the "Birth location in matches' tree" field.
For 23abndMe, enter the country in the "Search keywords" search field when looking at your DNA Relatives.
In FTDNA, enter the country in the search bar in the Family Finder Matches page.
I can't figure out how to do this in MyHeritage.

You can try FamilySearch look up service - https://www.familysearch.org/en/family-history-library/record-lookup-service - scroll to center of page to "Request Lookup" -  fill out form as much as you can
No fee

Or you can get copy of certificate at VitalCheck.com -  there is a fee  - $16 - 58.95 - usually cheaper if you have all the information and know the certificate number

Re: Searching (Kohen) Shapiros from Minsk area. #belarus #rabbinic

Sherri Bobish

Erik,

There is a record in Slutsk (60 miles from Minsk) of SHAPIRA, Eliezer, son of Yakov Tsvi SHAPIRA, who passed on 19-Dec-1911, and Eliezer's wife SHAPIRO, Reizil (maiden name) BOKSHITSKY, who passed on 16-Sep-1916. No ages are stated, but Reizil is referred to as "the elderly woman."

If Yakov was born circa 1840 and his parents born circa 1820 than it is not impossible that Eliezer and Reizil are his parents.

Since Eliezer is the son of Yakov it would make sense that your Eliezer named his son Yakov.

Perhaps the family was from Slutsk and moved to Minsk prior to emigrating?

If you can obtain Jacob's death cert from 1916 in New York than hopefully his mother's maiden name will be written there.  If her name was BOKSHITSKY than you can search for more family records in Slutsk.

Their passenger manifest has Minsk as last permanent residence.
Arrival July 25, 1906
SCHAPIRO
Jankel (may say Yankel), age 62
wife Riwke, age 44
children:
Krive (??) 17
Matte, 16
Chaim, 11
Laie, 10
Ettel, 10

They are going to Yankel's brother-in-law B. BERNSTEIN at 230 Pine, Buffalo, NY.

Researching the BERNSTEIN family may privide you with more clues as to their origins.

There is a Benjamin BERNSTEIN living at 230 Pine in Bufffalo in the 1906 city directory.
Benjamin's wife is Anna.
Children:
Louis, born about 1891 in NY
Elizabeth, born about 1893 in NY

Jacob's sons Carl and Hyman both write Minsk as  place of birth on WW1 draft cards.

Good luck in your search,

Sherri Bobish

Your best bet would be to use Proquest

You might be able to locate something by its the Marriage License Application number, but it will only reflect it in the NYC Online search under "Not Indexed" using the "License Number".

I've been surprised with locating License Applications when I'm unsuccessful with the Certificates.

Jill Whitehead

I found records for all four members of the Dukes family who escaped Vienna in 1939 and then left for Surrey, UK where they lived in my house for the next 46 years. I also could only access the front page despite having a full My Heritage subscription. However, reading the small print they seem to expect you to have a Data Plan (whatever this is) in addition to the subscription, and this is not cheap. The subscription is already on the high side, and so asking for another fee to view documents is not welcome.

I have a family member who was called Amelia Millicent and who was known as Mimi for short.

I also have Malka's who became Miriam in the UK.

One of my grandmothers (1903 - 1968) was Millie.  Her Hebrew name was Malka.
My other grandmother (1906 - 2004) was Amelia, aka Millie.  Her Hebrew name was also Malka.
Both were born in London.

Thanks so much Jan for this post.
I found my dad's application from May 1938 while he was still in Wien before escaping to Bratislava and then to Eretz Israel in Nov 1938.
Very exciting!
He entered by mistake his DOB as May 1938, instead of May 1920...
But, though I have subscription I could download only the first page and not the complete application.

New York Marriage Certificate Lookup #usa #records

tsteinberg@...

Hello all:
Need help to locating a copy of a NY marriage certificate. I have the marriage certificate # and exact date for my Grandparents in the Bronx. However, when I search the online Historical Vital records at the NYC Municipal Archives online which has the available years, the record does not show up by either name or certificate number. Here is the info:

Groom David Brawer
Bride Laura Labinsky( spelled wrong on the NYC index as Lablinsky)
Date 11/19/1941
Marriage Certificate # 12859

Any thoughts?
Thanks
