I agree with Yohanan's reply to your question.  My Aunt Edith Willig Marcu was born in Chernovitz, (Bukovina) Romania and always professed to be proud of her Austrian origins.  She spoke fluent German as well as Romanian and made dishes with Austrian roots - I remember her delicious Plum Dumplings and her Cherry Soup - dishes that are Austrian rather than typically Romanian.

I have four records on Viewmate for which I require translation from German into English. They are the forms/questionnaires for the four members of the Dukes family (parents and two children) to apply for an emigration pass to leave Vienna in 1938. The Dukes family lived in my house for 46 years, after three of them reached the UK in 1939, but the son was killed by the Nazis (assumed) before he could leave.

These can be found at:

Yohanan

If your ancestors referred to their origin as Russia in documents prior to WW1 then no doubt that it would be the smaller town from Russia,
because anyone that came from the larger city of Czernovitz, Bokovina  - was a proud Austrian and would never call themselves Russians.
Even during the Romanian time between the wars.
Unless the documents are from after ww2 when Czernovitz, Bokovina was part of USSR and maybe your ancestors would refer to USSR as Russia. But I doubt it.

Need telephone call(s) in Be'er Sheva #general

Nardo Bonomi

Dear Jewishgenners,

I'm a following for an academic research a very intriguing case of Crypto-Judaism in Sicily.

Jews were expelled from Sicily in 1492. After the expulsion
1) most of Jews migrated and settled in other parts of Italy and in the Ottoman Empire (Greece etc.). Here is a map of places where ended the Sicilian Jews after the expulsion: https://www.italian-family-history.com/jewish/_Sicilia.html#gone.
2) Some other Jews were forcibly converted to Christianity.
3) A small number of Anusim went on for centuries practising secretly Jewish customs.

After a pilgrimage from Sicily to Belgium some of the descendants of these Sicilian Crypto-Jews live today in Be'er Sheva.

I'm trying to contact some descendants because the result of my research could be a genealogical history of these families back to the the 16th century.

I have three surnames of interest but apparently the online Israel phone-directory don't give the right telephone numbers. Thus I ask to do few telephone calls in Beer Sheva and ask a few questions to these families.

Thank you

Daniel Horowitz had the same issue and I don't know how he determined which one was the correct one for his family, but he then ran an indexing project for one of them for the records microfilmed at FamilySearch, so you can check the database and see if you have matching family in the bigger city.

I would also like to add my thanks to Jan for this post.  I was able to find my mother's application for emigration from Vienna to England in June 1939.  She was able to successfully get to London in July. The comments by the interviewer provide a glimpse into how desperate life was at this time for both her and her father, a medical doctor, who was left behind then deported to Thereisenstadt in July 1942 where he perished in April 1943.

July 18 on Zoom: Clandestine Jewish Immigration to Pre-State Israel from the Center for Jewish History #announcements #israel #events

Moriah Amit

Family History Today: Clandestine Jewish Immigration to Pre-State Israel

Monday, July 18, at 11 am Eastern Time (U.S.) / 18:00 Israel

Between 1920 and 1948, over 100,000 European Jews attempted to immigrate to pre-state Israel, then British-Mandate Palestine, through illegal channels to circumvent Britain’s stringent immigration quotas. This clandestine migration, known as Aliyah Bet or Ha’apala, was predominantly comprised of refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe and Holocaust survivors from Europe’s DP camps. British patrols intercepted more than half of the Aliyah Bet ships heading to Palestine and sent most of the immigrants they discovered to detention camps in Cyprus, Mauritius, and the Atlit Camp in Palestine. In this lecture, Rina Offenbach, Director of the Bintivey Ha’apala Information and Research Center at the Atlit Detention Camp, will delve into the history of this episode, with a special focus on the Atlit Camp, and show you how to use the Atlit Center’s online database to learn more about your family’s arrival in Israel.

Ticket Info: Pay what you wish; register here for a Zoom link

This program is sponsored by the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the Center for Jewish History. Live closed captioning has been made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Thanks, Bob, I see your point. There is a difference between where the kit owner is living, and where his ancestors lived, which would be more useful for genealogy.

Re: Shtetel Searching for Gribnetz, Belarus - Birth Place of Uncle #belarus

Hap Ponedel

Bill,

Here is Grebnets from a Russian military map dated 1925. It is not necessarily the date that the original image was created but probably received updates that year, possibly the blue coloring to represent the wet areas. Belarus is often swampy.

I have placed a green arrow pointing to Grebnets, which is also marked with the number 37, indicating the number dwellings present when the original mapping survey was taken by the Russian military. The original survey probably happened closer to 1900 or even the 1890's. Again, blue areas are indicative of swamps and otherwise this area was wooded as indicated by all the little circles.
Here is a link to the image which can be downloaded from my website: http://easteurotopo.org/images/s84_western_Russia/XVII-25_s84_Cherven_LC_1925.jpeg
You should be able to right-click the image and save it to your computer. You will also see Cherven at the upper rt. corner of the image in all caps: ЧЕРВЕНЬ
Grebnets is best described as a village and not a shtetl, as it is very small. There is no discernible infrastructure and no central marketplace, a defining feature of shtetls. What is characteristic of villages is the arrangement of buildings on either side of ONE road. There is a cemetery located just to the north of the village. These maps often indicate whether a cemetery is Jewish but here that information is lacking.

Please email me for more interpretation of the map if you care.

Hap Ponedel

Help interpreting marriage records from all Galicia database. #galicia

Wendy Griswold

Hi, hope everyone is thinking positive and testing negative.

In the all-Galicia database, I am looking at Zurawno marriages 1901-1936.
The folks at Jewish Gen were kind enough to confirm my interpretation that
scans 6 and 7, Gicie Drucker and Shulem Ellner, same page, same record
number, confirms that they were married in Zurawno in 1901. Previous
message on this topic was number 669144.

Scans 2 and 12 show Schulem Shlomo Blitz and Gicie Hauptman, and the
dates, page, and record number are the same.
Married 1901, Zurawno.

(I checked this out with another couple I'm looking at. Scans 6, 7, and
15 show Moses Drucker marrying Feiga Ellner, and the information for
Feiga Ellner matches the information for one Feiga Kronland.) But that
was just for reference.

I think what I've got, looking at scans 2/12 and 6/7, is the same
couple, shown with both parents' surnames. This would be better than
genealogical gold. This would be genealogical diamonds. Which is why I
don't want to jump to conclusions.

Can someone please tell me if I'm right or if I'm perhaps suffering
from confirmation bias?

A thousand thanks,

Wendy Griswold
