To bring folks up to date ... I have found that this information is still available. The site ( ) is owned and maintained by the Fritz Bauer Institut in Frankfurt a/M. However, due to "legal reasons" (I suspect to do with Datenschutz), information on the site is only available to be searched from inside the Institut.

Ship Manifest Notation Question #records

Abram LIVER, a Sugihara refugee arrived in Seattle on July 7, 1941 from
Yokohama,  aboard the Japanese ship Hie Maru.  The  manifest can be
found on both and on by searching his
name, the date, and Seattle.
The attached excerpt shows him as passenger #1 with the notation "File
424/2860"  Passenger #6 has a similar notation, 423/2224
Both were Board of Special Inquiry cases and both had to post $500 bond
before being allowed to land.

Does anyone recognize the File 424/2860 notation and where the file
might be held today.?

June Genis

Bob beat me to it.  That is exactly the problem.  What I want to know id where they think their ancestors are from, not where my matches are from.  My memory is that at one time in FTDNA you could search on any word which appeared in someone's surname list but that feature went away and has never come back.  I wish it would and I don't understand why it can't.

Stamps on Postcard sent from Gross-Rosen camp #holocaust

Hanna Gafni

I am trying to decipher what the postal stamps on the stamp say in an attempt to find out where exactly is the camp mentioned in the sender’s address (who is my mother), which is Schomberg b. Landeshut.

I could find Landeshut (it’s a part of Gross- Rosen), but am unable to find Schomberg. The full date will be a bonus.

Thanks, Hanna

Marion Werle

There is a problem with sorting by country. There are two shools of thought regarding how to enter birthplaces and places of residence on family trees. One (which I follow, and Legacy Family Tree - owned by MyHeritage- subscibes to) says to use the name of the location and the jurisdiction as it existed at the time. The other says to use current place name. My DNA matches on MyHeritage that show "Russia" as a birthplace are not at all helpful, although I list current place names on my DNA profile, as opposed to my tree.

Vi Burgo

Adding an update here, in case anyone else can help further the research.

Hi _____,

Yes, I checked the book again and it says that some Burgos (Sefardies) went to Smyrna (Izmir, Turkey) after the expulsion. Falcon del Burgo, interesting! The Falcon surname is in this book too and it mentions Falcons going to Toledo, Roma, Livorno, Bordeaux and Amsterdam. The surname Falco is here too and mentions Sefardies going to Torina, Gerona and Milano. I'll attach both pages to this email/post. Book source: "DICIONÁRIO SEFARADI de SOBRENOMES Inclusive Cristãos-novos, Conversos, Marranos, Italianos, Berbères e sua Historia na Espanha, Portugal e Itália"

I am in the process of figuring out the migration pattern of my family with this surname. It could be possible that after the expulsion they spent a little time in France and/or England then went to the Americas or... after the expulsion went directly to the Americas.

Here's the variation of the surname that I've encountered thus far:

Gallicized: Borge, Borges, Borja, Borjas, Borjes, Burgos, Burguera, Burgues, Bourgeois, burgeois, burges, borgûes, bourges, borjois, Bourgeois, Bourgois, Bourgeoys, Bourgeot, Le Bourgeois, de Bourgeois, Bourjois, Bourgès, Bourgeix

Anglicized: Burgess, Burgeis, Burghersh, Burges, Burgesse, Burgar, Bergiss, Bergess, Bargess, Bargeis, Bergeus, Burgeus, Burgeuss and many more. Borges, BorgeisVariations in the spelling of the surname include Burges, Burgiss, Burgis, Burgise and Borges.

looking for Leon Korber, a relative of Nicolae Cajal, Romanian Virologist #romania #names

Aline Petzold

Hello All:
I have a letter saved by my father, Dr. Joseph Sternberg, written by a colleague, the Romanian pioneering virologist, Nicolae Cajal.  The letter was written in March 1948, from Bucharest to my father who was doing research in Paris.  It mentions the fact that a relative of his, "Leonica Korber," who had just passed away from "kidney schlerosis".  I would like to know if Korber was a scientist and what the relationship was between Cajal and Korber. Thanks for your help.

I agree with Yohanan's reply to your question.  My Aunt Edith Willig Marcu was born in Chernovitz, (Bukovina) Romania and always professed to be proud of her Austrian origins.  She spoke fluent German as well as Romanian and made dishes with Austrian roots - I remember her delicious Plum Dumplings and her Cherry Soup - dishes that are Austrian rather than typically Romanian.

I have four records on Viewmate for which I require translation from German into English. They are the forms/questionnaires for the four members of the Dukes family (parents and two children) to apply for an emigration pass to leave Vienna in 1938. The Dukes family lived in my house for 46 years, after three of them reached the UK in 1939, but the son was killed by the Nazis (assumed) before he could leave.

These can be found at:

Re: Chernivtsi or Chernivtsi? #russia #ukraine #austria-czech

If your ancestors referred to their origin as Russia in documents prior to WW1 then no doubt that it would be the smaller town from Russia,
because anyone that came from the larger city of Czernovitz, Bokovina  - was a proud Austrian and would never call themselves Russians.
Even during the Romanian time between the wars.
Unless the documents are from after ww2 when Czernovitz, Bokovina was part of USSR and maybe your ancestors would refer to USSR as Russia. But I doubt it.

Need telephone call(s) in Be'er Sheva #general

Nardo Bonomi

Dear Jewishgenners,

I'm a following for an academic research a very intriguing case of Crypto-Judaism in Sicily.

Jews were expelled from Sicily in 1492. After the expulsion
1) most of Jews migrated and settled in other parts of Italy and in the Ottoman Empire (Greece etc.). Here is a map of places where ended the Sicilian Jews after the expulsion:
2) Some other Jews were forcibly converted to Christianity.
3) A small number of Anusim went on for centuries practising secretly Jewish customs.

After a pilgrimage from Sicily to Belgium some of the descendants of these Sicilian Crypto-Jews live today in Be'er Sheva.

I'm trying to contact some descendants because the result of my research could be a genealogical history of these families back to the the 16th century.

I have three surnames of interest but apparently the online Israel phone-directory don't give the right telephone numbers. Thus I ask to do few telephone calls in Beer Sheva and ask a few questions to these families.

Thank you

Nardo Bonomi Braverman

Daniel Horowitz had the same issue and I don't know how he determined which one was the correct one for his family, but he then ran an indexing project for one of them for the records microfilmed at FamilySearch, so you can check the database and see if you have matching family in the bigger city.
