Was Hersch (or Herschel) and Hertz (or Hertzel) basically the same
name?

I have found Hersch defined as deer, while Herz is defined as heart.
Yet I have seen both names associated with:

(1) the Herbrew name for deer: Zvi, Tsvi or Tsui,
(2) the biblical name Naphthali
(3) and the American and British names Harris, Harry or Harold,

They appear both within my family and in the literature as if they
were the same name.

Nonetheless, I have had family members insist that an ancestor (born
in the late 1800's) named Hertzel couldn't possibly have been named
after his great grandfather named Herschel (born in the early 1800's)
because "they're not the same name and in Europe in those days they
always used the same name, rather than a similar name."

survived.

The man marries again and has another son. The relationship between
the two sons would be that of half brothers. What would be the
relationship between the second son and the murdered daughters?
Since they died prior to the birth of the second son, would they
also be half sisters to the second son? What would the murdered
first wife of the father be to the second son? Would she be a
step-mother even if she perished before the birth of the second son?

The second son WOULD HAVE been a half-brother to the two murded daughters
from his father's first marriage. Death nor divorce would change this.
The first wife, however, would have been NOTHING to him. Had she not
died, he may never have married again and had this second son. Even if he
did, whether legitimately after a divorce, or illegitimately, there still
would be NO relation, blood or legal, between the first wife and the second
son.

And there you have it :)

Yahrzeit boards #general

The initiative to put the Orange Street shul's yahrzeit boards on the
web was great. But why wait till the shul goes out of business?

Let's all go to our neighborhood shuls (or better yet, our
grandparents' shuls, where the data is older) and put the yahrzeit
board info onto the JewishGen web.

And when there are enough, maybe someone will hook them up
with a searcher.

In my neverending quest to find the Szobrancz vital records I followed a
lead to the archives in Satoraljaujhely. Just received the following
response >from Dr. Istvan Hogye who says that they don't have any Szobrancz
records. With the help of a dictionary I've been able to get the gist of
the message which regretfully informs me that the records are not in this
archive. Unless I'm mistaken, the message also states (incorrectly) that
Szob rancz is now in the Ukraine Republic and suggests that I direct my
requests there.

An accurate translation of the following would be appreciated by all of us
with Szobrancz roots.

<<A Moskovits es Neumann csaladokra vonatkozo adatokat sajnosnem tudjuk
szolgaltatni, mivel a megadott szuletesi helyet Szobranc, a torteneti Ung
vm-hez tyartozott. Leveltarunkban Zemplen varmegye knozsegeinek egyhazi es
vilagi anyakonyveit orizzuk. Szobranc jelenleg az Ukran Koztarsasaghoz
