JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

I may be geographically challenged. Does an "Austro-Hungarian SIG"
cover a larger territory or a smaller territory than our current "Greater Hungarian SIG"? In theory (depending on the answer, I guess), I think the Vienna group from Ger-SIG would seem to have a lot in common with us and the changein name could make things much clearer. I'm not sure anyone besides us knows what "Greater Hungary" is, anyway. H-SIGers are already interested in records in Vienna (military records, at least), and the cultural overlap is obvious. The only negative aspect that I see is that I rather like our small, intimate discussions and expanding the discussion would be rewarding but ultimately less informal. --Diane <dgoldman@...> mod. A little condensed geographical history of East-Central Europe may be in order: Prior to 1867 when the dual monarchy was created, there was only the Austrian Empire which comprised Greater Hungary (AKA as pre Trianon Hungary - Trianon was the name of the treaty that dismembered the Austro-Hungarian Emprire after WWI, and resulted in Hungary loosing 2/3 of its previous territory*), Austria, Bohemia, Moravia and after the partition of Poland in the latter part of the 18th century, Galicia as well. * A map of Greater Hungary can be found on our website. Greater Hungary never existed as an independant political entity except in the dreams and aspirations of Magyar patriots (my maternal grandfather included). LS

Dear SIG Members -
I agree with Linda. As I understand it we have been talking about greater Hungary. Austro-Hungary was only a certain time period. Let's leave it the way it is. Nancy Hallas

I understand Aschner Lipo't was a reknowned industrialist in Budapest. There
is a street, Aschner Lipo't Te'r. named for him. What district is this in? He is buried in the neolog cemetary at Mohacs. He survived WWII and died around 1952. In the 30s he live in Ujpest. what district is this? Does anyone know anything about him, where "his" street is, why he was so honored, and of course, anything about his family. Patai's book referrs to relatives Jakab and Otto. Aschner is not a very common name, mine come >from Vienna, Hradiste and Kosice. I've been in touch with Klaus Aschner who was born in Breslau. Scope of H-Sig
#hungary
Charles R. Mandelbaum <cmandel@...>
I vote for maintaining the current scope of H-Sig. we have enough
trouble sorting out countries, name changes, etc. without introducing new confounding information. As one subscriber, the German SIG and others offer help to those with more German than Hungarian ancestors. Regards, Charles Mandelbaum

Welcome postings >from those who have interests in Austria and Germany, but
don't change H-SIG's name ...at least for the time being. If I have the story right, this issue began when one person expressed dissatisfation about another SIG and claimed that at least he and 10 other individuals were ready to join H-SIG. To paraphrase a cliche, "Show me the articles!" In other words, let those who wish to place their postings with H-SIG come forward. H-SIG might even elect to be proactive, but name changing is not the way. The condition for considering a name change is when a critical mass is reached and sustained...not the converse. it resulted in a pool of information >from France regarding distant relatives. One party wrote that during WWII his rabbi and Hebrew teacher was "Mr POLIATSCHEK", who had Bar Mitzvah'd him. It turns out that Mr P. was my relative, rabbin Mois P. A second party wrote (via email >from his son-in-law) that he was a classmate in ecole rabbinic (rabbinical school) with the son of rabbin Mois P. He furnished new biographical info on both father and son. This is indicative of successful searches that can be had by posting on JewishGen, (suggested as a supplement to the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) search). mailto:bkoosh@... Bernard Kouchel

TheRose Stove Company
#general
Mike Fischer <miketran@...>
I have been looking for information about a Joseph Rose or Rose Stove Company.
Till now, I was led to understand that the company was in New York. Tonight, one of my father's cousin told me something very interesting. Quote;" For as long as I can remember, people have asked me if I had any relatives by the same name in the midwest. My answer was a strong "no" and they always remarked that there was indeed a Rose Stove Company in Cleveland, Ohio and they might be relatives" Unquote. Have any of you midwesterners heard of it? In the back of my memory, I seem to remember hearing years ago about some relatives in Chicago but no one else in the family remembers anything. At the suggestion of some of you , I have contacted 4 antique stove companies. Only one replied and suggested that I place an ad in their upcoming issue of their magazine having to do with antique appliances. This magazine goes all over the country, Canada and Mexico. When I find this guy's family, I am going to send them a bill for what it is costing me to track him down. Wilma Fischer Passaic, N.J.
