Re: KZ destinations from Hungary #hungary

Mark Benisz <MBenisz@...>

I was hoping someone might be able to help me now that we are on this
subject.
My father wasa child of 5 years when the Nazi's invaded his town of
Esztergom. I believe that the Jews of that town were deported to Komarom and
from there to Auschwitz. Only 50 of those Jews (out of 500) survived the
war, may father and his step-mother included.
My father remen=mbers being in a camp but does not know which one. Were any
records kept? I need this information because I am applying for
compensation.
Thank you,
Mark Benisz

first, there are lots of authoritative sources on the holocaust in
hungary. apart >from books, you can also find material on the
internet, etc. (starting with the <http://www.jewishgen.org> site,
which has a search feature, and the h-sig, hungarian special interest
group, at <http://www.jewishgen.org/hungary/>.)

in more general terms, the men of military age were drafted and put
into forced labour battalions, mostly on the russian front. women,
children and the elderly were mostly shipped off to auschwitz to be
murdered, with the exception of about 30,000 who were kept for slave
labour and possibly ransoming in some form of "jews for trucks" deal.
(jewish slave labour was a valuable commodity which the ss sold to
private industry - see "schindler's list".) several transports were
sent to strasshof in austria instead. there is currently a
discussion of this going on through the h-sig list, which you should
be able to find by searching in the archives for "strasshof".

Holocaust
There apparently is a Sara Bernies with Dorothy, Ruth, Evelien & Shirly
There may also be a brother Schlomo who had two sons and a daughter also
apparently perished in the Holocaust

David had at least two daughters

Name also spelled DIAMANT and came >from Poland.

If anything rings true... please feel free to contact us.

Bob and Kay Hennes <reks@...>

Looking for any descendants of a Melville Blum, born approximately 1902 in
NY, served in the Navy, and may have died in 1980 in the Bronx. Any
knowledge of any Melville Blum would be appreciated.

Thanks. This board has resulted in finding several cousins and uncles who
never knew each other existed. Amazing results.

Locating a Toronto birth record #general

I believe my family is distantly related to the bandleader Percy FAITH, who
was born April 7, 1908 in Toronto, Canada and died February 9, 1976 in
Encino, California. I would like to find out the names of his parents.
Does anyone know if (a) The city of Toronto maintained and still has birth
certificates >from this time, and (b) can I access these records on-line.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to respond
privately, my address is: mahpitom@mindspring.com. Todah rabbah!

Re: Har Jehuda Cemetery - Philadelphia (Upper Darby) #general

Hilary Henkin <propper@...>

Dear Paul,
I've only just tried this, so I can't promise it'll work, but the idea is promising:

I bought one of those one-use cameras, and sent it to the cemetery, with
instructions on what I wanted photographed, and a stamped, self-addressed
return label. I sent the whole shebang in a reuseable box, so they didn't
have to look for an envelope - just stick the return label on the box.
I made sure to put my name and address on the camera, just in case it got
separated >from the instructions.

I hope they'll take the photographs and return the camera to me for processing.

If you don't find someone to take your photos for you, this may be an
alternative idea.
