Labour Camp Wendefurt #general

Robert Fraser <rgfraser@...>

I wonder if anyone can supply information on a labour camp called Wendefurt.
I cannot vouch for the correct spelling, but that's what I have been told.

I always assumed that it was in Germany, but I was recently told that it was
near Vienna, as my grandfather who lived Vienna apparantly travelled there
everyday and was allowed to return home each night. He wasn't allowed to
talk about it to his family, but strangely enough I have a photograph of him
and the others at the camp. The period was 1938, after the Anschluss.

I have searched in the Forgotten Camps database, but I cannot find any
mention of this place. Amy information would be appreciated

Is the Bohemian language still an active language? What language was
spoken in Bohemia? Was there Yiddish in Bohemia? What language did the
Jewish population speak in Bohemia?

Thank you,

Petofi Society #hungary

Judy Petersen

I have a copy of the Petofi Society's 50th anniversary (1880-1930) yearbook.
The Petofi Society was a Sick and Benevolent Society founded by Hungarian
immigrants (not necessarily >from the same town) in New York City. They had
cemetary plots in Mt. Acacia Cemetary (not sure of location) and Mt. Lebanon
Cemetary (Long Island). The yearbook mentions the names of the past
presidents and officers, deceased members and members of the anniversary
committee, though not of the entire membership (which exceeded 900 at that
time). There are also articles about Alexander Petofi and the history of the
society, as well as advertisements of the businesses of some of the members.
Anyone wishing a lookup can contact me privately.

The Bardejov yizkor book contains some of these names in the 1941 census
printed there. It includes refugees >from nearby towns (even the area of
Galicia that borders on Saros county). I do not know if the LDS FHC has a
center in Israel, but they have filmed it. It is film #1183504.

Dear Genners,
I am always impressed by your analysis of given names. I have two that are
stumping me. What are some other versions of the name Temma? I am
