Lotte Schiffer aged 3 in 1936 from Praha #austria-czech

RonJohnson1951@...

Hi everyone,

I found a lovely photo of Lotte Hermina Schiffer taken in Praha. Her sister
Lilli has written a note on the back. Lotte was 3 1/2years old in 1936.

I understand she was murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz.

I would be pleased to send the photo to a family member or alternatively send it to Yad Vashem.

Announcing our 2017/5777 Volunteer of the Year! #austria-czech

Groll, Avraham

At last week's 2017 IAJGS conference, JewishGen was proud to name Dr.
Janette Silverman, coordinator of the JewishGen Ukraine SIG, as the
recipient of our 2017/5777 Volunteer of the Year award.

Over the years, Janette has devoted an enormous amount of time to
JewishGen's important work. In addition to serving as the coordinator
for the JewishGen Ukraine SIG, she serves as a moderator for the
JewishGen Discussion Groups, has previously served on our operations
committee, and is someone who consistently tries to help in any way
that she can. The results of her hard work are readily apparent to
users, and her organizational skills are admired by her many co-
volunteers.

We wish Janette a Mazal Tov on this well-deserved honor, and express
our sincere gratitude for her outstanding contributions and devotion to
JewishGen and the broader Jewish genealogical community.

Mazal Tov!

Grunhut families #austria-czech

Hank Lobbenberg

Dear genealogy friends. I have a problem to solve and hope that you can
assist me.
I have GRUNHUT (umlaut above the first u) families >from both my father and
my mother whose birth name was Betty GRUNHUT.
I have found Moises GRUNHUT b. 1790 in Nachod, Bohemia and died there in
1856. I would like the names of his siblings. I believe that will give
me the information I need to connect the paternal and maternal families.
Please contact me privately at hank.lobben@rogers.com

Seeking Boston congregation records #general

Julie Miller

Does anybody know whether congregation records exist for the former
Congregation Beth Israel, 238 Columbia St., Boston? It was founded in
1901, followed the Sephardic minhag, and was in the Cambridgeport area.
It started as the House of Israel Association.

My husband's great-grandparents were members there in the early 1900s.

So far, I have contacted the following congregations and no one has the
records: Temple Beth Shalom of Cambridge; Congregation Beth Israel
(Anshei Litte); Temple Israel; Beth Israel Malden; and Congregation Beth
Israel in Worcester.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Thanks for any information! Julie Miller

Researching:

MILLER, HURWITZ/GURVICH, BERNSTEIN/BERNSHTEIN - Jovaishishkes,
Butrimonys, Prienai, Marijampol, Lithuania, Latvia

(Israel) Israel National Library Launches Digital Manuscript Archive #general

Jan Meisels Allen

On August 2, 2017 Israel's National Library launched an online database of
tens of thousands of digitized Jewish manuscripts >from across the globe. The
archive contains almost 4.5 million images >from 45,000 manuscripts ranging
from Afghanistan to Spain, representing about 53% of the collection. They
include prayer books., biblical texts, commentary, philosophy, scientific
writings and more. The database is called "Ktiv" which means "written word"
in Hebrew. They are digitizing form originals and microfilmed copies.

The initiative was conceived by Israel's first Prime Minister Ben Gurion in
1950. This project is a joint venture with Friedberg Jewish Manuscript
Society, and partnered with some of the repositories of the world's largest
Jewish collections in order to achieve all manuscripts under one digital
roof.

The library is working to make the texts within the manuscripts searchable
to online users.

For those who read my last email and may have an interest I want to
update you. I had gone to the web site vibu@jewua.org. They actually
gave me a little more historical detail on the town of Olshana, Kiev
Gubernia, Ukraine than Jewishgen had. However they did have a book
mentioned in there that actually was >from Olshan, Belarus, Poland.
When I notified them they promptly removed it. Might have been a
language or communications barrier. But their response was quick. And
thank you for responding promptly also. Beverly Mones (Monastersky)
