Galvacs #hungary

David Sencer

I have just found that the birthplace of my first cousins, once removed, is
Galvacs. I have found it on the map, but have been unable to determine the
county. Would appreciate any knowledge of that village, and suggestions for
furtherance of research would be appreciated.

Regina and Seren were born in 1876 and 1884. Mother Hannah Gross Kish,
father Salamon Kish. Hannah's sister, Bertha, married Ignatz Senz(c)er and
they are my paternal grandparents. I know nothing of their Hungarian
birthplaces or marriage sites. Vague family remembrances mention Szendro,
which is close to Galvacs.

Going to school in Budapest in 1944 - 1945 for Jewish children #hungary

Eva Floersheim <evaflor@...>

Trying to piece together the memories of my friend Gyorgi Pollak, born 1936
in Budapest, I would like your help in pinpointing
a) the date Jewish children could no longer go to elementary school in
Budapest after the German occupation in March 1944. Was it in April, May or
June? Was there an exact date, which seems likely in this case?
b) the date Jewish children started school again after the liberation of
Pest on January 18th or 19th 1945. Was it already in January, or in February
or March? Was there an exact date, which seems less likely in this case?

One woman told us that though the Jewish children did not go to school for
around 8 - 10 months, they continued the next school year, catching up.
Other experiences?

When did/does the school year start in Hungary - in August or September
1st?

Thank you.

Burial Societies #romania

Michael Abramson <mba36@...>

My grandmother is buried in the Romanian-American Lodge Society Plot at the
Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn. She died many years after my grandfather
who is buried in the Society Plot of the United Brotherhood of Parnevisch at
the same cemetery. My question is this, does one have to come >from Romania
to be buried in their Society Plot? My understanding, and it may be
incorrect, is that both my grandparents came >from Parnevisch(Panevezys.)
Thank you for your help. M. Abramson

question about All-Russia Census, 1897 #belarus

Joyce Weaver <joyweave@...>

Does anyone know exactly what information can be obtained >from the All-Russia Census of
1897? Is it a listing of Heads of Household? All family names? Age? Occupation?

I am thinking of asking to have someone at Grodno Archives look up my grandparents in
Wisoke-Litovsk, Brest uezd, but I don't know whether I need to give them all the known
names of the children or just my gf's name and approximate age.

film #'s for LDS look up I will do for you #general

orinne <dianedaily@...>

Many thanks to all those who let me know that there are many, many rolls of
film for the index of naturalization and marriage in NYC.

Today, I took a trip to the FHC and found a very knowledgeable and helpful
young woman who clarified for me, the films that had been ordered for me by
one of the FHC assistants.

These are the films I have ordered >from LDS.

#1543942 New York City index to marriages - all boroughs 1922/1924 plus
Manhattan 1925. Groom surnames beginning with A-J.

#1420255 Index (soundex) to naturalization records 1792/1906, Indexes a
number of courts.
The film I have ordered is a soundex index for G531 Galligan-Goldberg,
Julius.
This film is on back order.

#1522856 Index to Petition for Naturalizations District Court of New York,
Southern District, Manhattan 1907/1917.

Anyone needing a lookup >from the above indexes, please contact me.

I crave your benevolent mercy for the confusion regarding this issue.
Please accept my abject, if somewhat belated, apologies.

Hello everyone.

I need help translating names of some possible relatives who came to US >from
Ukraine (Shargorod or Vinnitsa) in early 1900's. The names are: males Kisel

become in US? I checked the Ukraine Given Names Database and got no
results. Is there another resource someone can suggest?
