the moderator, and other members of the list, have already solved this mystery adequately. ("n." would be a fairly normal hungarian abbreviation for "nagy".) but it may still be helpful to add a note about technique:

if you use the radix 1913 gazetteer, <http://www.bogardi.com/gen/g168.shtml>, you will find a whole bunch of towns containing "karoly", >from (pre-world war one) "greater hungary". it lists the hits that it finds by name, and includes their designation (size of community), megye, and present-day country, as well as mapping their locations. it works with partial names as well, making it a useful tool for working out misspellings, etc. the only caveat is that it will ONLY take unaccented letters, but it will match them correctly to their accented forms. (e.g. searching for "karoly" will find "ka'roly", etc.)

and no, i don't get any form of compensation for publicizing this site.

Hi all

I have a letter >from 1957 addressed to my father >from Mrs. Dr. Georg
BASCH, Budapest VI Sriv Utica 33 III 2 Hungary

I would like:
1. to send a letter to this address in hopes that a BASCH family
member still lives there; or that the current resident knows of them,
or how to reach them.

2. your suggestions on how I address the envelope: "Current
resident of Budapest VI .....? or BASCH family, or what?

3. to know what section of Budapest this address is in? I often
see people on this list refer to various "areas" and I am
unsure which "area" my family was from.

4. Someone to inform me if city directories in Budapest would be
helpful in looking for surnames and if so what dates are
available for these directories.

I know I've asked a lot, but I seem to be working on a most elusive side
of the family and could really use your help.

Karoly. There is another town in Hungary called NagyKiraly,
so you may want to consider that as a possibilty.

I'm guessing that "Wohamja" is a mistyping or mis-hearing of the name
Nechemje/Nechemja. I've seen many. many Nechemje's take the name Hyman upon
arrival in America (or as a secular name for those who were born here with
the Hebrew name Nechemje). The best place to check your grandfather's
"correct" name would be his tombstone. It will very likely have his Hebrew
name written on it.
