Frankfurt-born Israeli economist wins the Nobel #germany

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today
that the 2005 "Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences
in Memory of Alfred Nobel" -- more commonly known as the
Nobel Prize in Economics -- has been awarded to Robert
John Aumann, of the Center for Rationality at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem.

Aumann was born in Frankfurt in 1930. Those who can
comprehend his work can read about it at
http://cepa.newschool.edu/het/profiles/aumann.htm
For the rest of us, the photo of a smiling, bearded,
kippa-wearing Israeli of German descent will do.

Re: Researching in Boulens, Switzerland #germany

Nick Landau <N.Landau@...>

This is the website for Vaudoise which contains Boulens
http://www.ucv.ch/communal/Co_ucv.asp?NumStr=09.20&NoOFS=5661.

info@boulens.ch is the email for the the commune of Boulens.

I would point out that there are only 230 people living currently in
Boulens, so I don't know where records would be held.

This is a French-speaking area and the above website is in French.

The Swiss Jewish Genealogical Society is at
http://www.eye.ch/swissgen/ver/jeinfo-d.htm. The website is in German.
Research questions should be sent to reneloeb@tiscali.ch.

My quarry was born in Boulens in 1872. I presume Boulens is a city or
village within a region of Switzerland.
Could someone please tell me how I should start my search. Thanks,

German Jewish History before 400 BCE as well as Proto-German Jewish Existence #germany

Marcus Poulin <nanophotonic@...>

I would have to surmise there has to be even more undiscovered Jewish
archeological evidence in Germany prior to the cemetery found in Köln and
even before the Gaonic Period.

Assyrian and Roman persecution must have driven the Jews to not only the
corners of the Middle East but to many parts of Europe as well.

Could it be said that the Judeans and Israelites did exist in a further
far-reaching Diaspora than is generally known?

The Babylonians utilized a far-flung Empire and I would have to think that
Jewish merchants did accompany them.

Could it also be said that the Franco-German history could be rewritten
(correctly) to also show a pronounced Judeo influence?

Revisionistic history is always proceeding and developing. Sincerely,

Marcus Poulin nanophotonic@comcast.net

Early Jewish arrivals in London #unitedkingdom

Peter J E Brunning <peter@...>

Most likely Sephardic, as Jill says. There were a lot in Amsterdam as well.
This certainly applies to my Melhado ancestors.
The records of Bevis Marks, which date back a long way, have been published,
so you might be able to find them there.
I wrote a few notes on the registers here:
