Hungarian cemetary in Montreal #general

Arnold Samlan

I recently learned that my great grandmother is buried in Hungarian Hebrew
Cemetery Association section of Back River cemetery in Montreal. Burial was in
1915 (which I learned of through the wonderful work of JGS of Montreal).

Does anyone know about the cemetery association? Since this is the earliest
link that I have so far on my paternal grandfather's side, I am trying to
determine whether any early records exist, and whether her being buried there
meant anything in terms of her roots.

re Sachsenhausen-in-Waldeck #general

Hi Jewishgenners,

I wish to thank all those who replied to me, both on-list and off-list
regarding my search for information regarding Sachsenhausen-in-Waldeck in
Germany. The information and leads were very useful.

It appears, however, that my original information was not entirely accurate.
The town still exists, even, though all the pre-WW2 Jewish Community either
dispersed or were victims of the Holocaust.

I received an interesting e-mail >from Alexander Sharon, the editor of the
JGFF. He gave me some very interesting and useful information that is of
great interest and assistance to me. It appears that the town for which I
was searching was not listed in the JGFF Data-base. and my query was the
first regarding this particular town in the JGFF. Mr Sharon and others did,
however, trace queries in other genealogical lists about this town and
referred them to me. Thank you all very much.

I am pretty sure that the organization that Irene had referred to as the
"Jewish Immigrant Aid Society" has been translated in English to the "Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society," commonly known to New York's Jewish immigrants as
"HIAS." Otherwise, I agree with her comments.

Detailed maps of (galicia) Southern Poland, Northern Hungary #general

phylliskramer1@...

I stumbled upon these Polish maps on a Lemko site. They are high resolution maps
of the southeastern corner of poland...and a little of ukraine
(so lots of the ex-galician area). The site says the maps were recently released
for public use by the headquarters of the Polish Army. They are full color and
terribly exciting....as you can see your shtetls and the surrounding areas quite
clearly.

They are fairly large at 300KB, but certainly worth downloading!!
I intend to put some on my shtetlinks sites for Krosno Jaslo Rymanow
Zmigrod Dukla Korczna Frysztak Strzyzow and Jaslo .

Pamela Furmidge's Family Mystery #hungary

John J Kovacs <j.kovacs@...>

Pamela Furmidge is trying to reasearch her grandfather
and his family.

I think your family mystery lies with your mother. If
you can locate her birth record, probably in the city
of Arad records then I think you will have your
grandfather's proper name.

Was your mother in the Heller grandfather's will who
died in 1928? I am sure you must have thought about
the interesting fact that the "grandfather" you found
had children in the U.K. in 1905 and fathered your
mother in Hungary in 1911 and possibly other children
and still supposedly living and finally being buried
in the UK in 1928. Could you be loooking at two
different Hellers?

I suspect that you must have carefully looked through
your mother's papers for birth records, travel
documents, immigration papers, etc. In any case if
she was born in Arad in 1911 her birth had to
registered with the authorities in Arad and her father
and mother's names were also recorded. This should be
your best bet for finding your grandfather's proper
name.
