Mondorf cemetery #general

Stephen Esrati <stevsta@...>

Some years ago (probably 1995) I reported here that students at a high
school in Cologne had restored the Jewish cemetery in Mondorf (now
Niederkassel). Among my relatives buried there was Friederica
GOTTSCHALK, wife of Hirsch (Hermann) CAHN. They had 14 children.
The students also raised funds to have a new gate cast at a Cologne
studio. Alas, they could not read the gravestones.
Since then, students at the Luitspold High School (Hauptschule) planted
12 trees in the cemetery, one each for the following families:
BAR (spelled with an Umlaut)
CAHN
COSSMANN
MEYER
FRENKEL
GOTTSCHALK
HIRSCH
SCHMITZ
KAHN
LEVY
WOLFF
GOLDSTEEN
Since the first restoration efforts, 42 graves have been identified.
Most astonishing is a picture of the grave of Leopold LEVY, who was
buried in 1940 despite a Nazi ban on Jewish funerals. The villagers
buried him at niight. There is no gravestone.
Several of the extant gravestones give detailed genealogical information.

The researcher who has sent me all the material about the Mondorf
cemetery needs pictures of the synagogue destroyed by the Nazis on the
night of the pogrom in 1938. (He refuses to call it Kristalnacht.)
Can anyone recommend a source for pictures of destroyed German synagogues?

I posted this already - but I realize there are some
words in Hungarian that I may not have translated well
- like "szamolni" , so I have included Istvan's
original message - perhaps it will help in determining
what the next step should be for us. Thank you.

Kunagota Cemetery - Hungary #hungary

I recently learned >from Istvan Balogh in Hungary, who
has done extensive research on the Jewish community of
Bekes megye, that the Jewish cemetery in Kunagota will
be closed. According to him, there was an agreement
with religious elders who agreed that if there were no
funerals in 25 years, the town could re-incorporate
the site.

Does anyone know what can be done to prevent this?
What do we need? I am in Los Angeles, he is in
Budapest now, but if anyone has experience with this,
I would appreciate your information. Thank you.

that's nice, but what does it have to do with austro-hungary? (if you remember, we are posting to h-sig.)

This is a very complex subject. The best discussion of which I am aware is

follows quotes or paraphrases his book.

If you're interested in the subject, I strongly encourage you to get
Stanislawski's book at the library!!

Yad vaShem-Auschwitz Victims-Additional Data #hungary

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Dear Genners and Siggers,
As you probably know the Auschwitz Museum website has
an alphabetical list of 69,000 victims who were
executed there, including non Jews.I just discovered
that Yad vaShem has posted the same list on the PoT
section but with additional data:
the names of the victim's parents. Thus I now know
that the parents of my relative Hermann KOENIGSBUCH
from Michalovce were Joseph KOENIGSBUCH and Helene
BLAS. Only by having his father's given name I know
how he is connected to me(Joseph and my grandfather
Ascher were brothers).
I assume that BLAS family is >from Slovakia. If it
rings a bell I would like to hear privately.

Early 20th Century Death Notices #general

Bobmar37

Several years ago I was looking up some obituaries as a favor for someone
else and found that in those days newspapers didn't have a section for
obituaries. They were squeezed in between news articles and social notices
here and there, particularly in small town newspapers. In one case, I didn't
find the obit I was looking for but simply a notice that a man was home from
out-of-town visiting his mother, with no mention of the father's death!

Responses: Rodom (or Radom), Sonomira, and Sandomierz & Zawichost #general

I made my first posting to the JewishGen site yesterday and I've been simply
overwhelmed with the many helpful and kind responses I've received.
Clearly this is a very knowledgeable, and special, group. Hopefully, I'll be
able to return the favor one of these days.

My thanks to you all.
