JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

I know nothing about Davidovka and Russian institution. But the Hungarian
Army had a field hospital at Kiev. After the Voronezh debacle, many forced labour conscripts, my father included, marched back westward to Kiev, some managed to get into that hospital for warmth, food and perhaps care. My father did, and contacted typhoid fever there. He died within days at that hospital. Could Paul Linhart's grandfather have found his way to the same place? Andrew Sanders Toronto / Haifa

Indeed Well Street is now Ensign Street. My father, the late John Freedman
(1910-1999) lived there at #27, during the 1st World War until he left with his parents for Australia in 1922. #22 is now occupied by the school. In the census of 1901 my greatgrandparents Michael and Dora Blumenthal lived at #45 Well Street. They later moved to St.Mark Street. I visited the area with my father in 1970 and many of the old buildings were still standing. Last October when I visited again all the buildings were new. My father told me that he attended a primary school in the centre of Wellclose square. He was born at #212 St.Georges Road now called the Highway. His parents, Myer and Annie Freedman were married in the Little Alie Street Shule in 1909, which was in ruins in 1970 and by 1974 when I visited it, it had been converted into the Half Moon Theatre. That too has disappeared in a new building. In fact during my visit with my wife last October, none of the sites where my family lived are still standing. Davidovka, Ukraine 1943: Soviet Field Hospital and/or Nazi Forced-Labor Camp?
#hungary
Ujfeherto@...
I am trying to trace the fate of my grandfather Antal LINHARDT who
disappeared >from the #401 Penal Labor-Service Brigade on January 12, 1943 at the Russian Front after the Voronezh Offensive. According to an eyewitness, my grandfather was taken to a field hospital at the Front (although it is unclear whether this was a Nazi or Soviet hospital) According to the book Fekete konyu by Eugene Levai, Hungarians in exile in Moscow (Mihaly Farkas, Erno Gero, Bela Illes, and Zoltan Vas) arranged for POWs taken by the Soviets to be cared for at the Davidovka Hospital in the Ukraine. There are several places in the Ukraine called Davidovka, but I believe this to be at long. 51' 10", lat. 39' 26" I noticed that Hungarian Olympic fencing athlete, Attila Petschauer, whose death was depicted in the movie Sunshine, died in Nazi labor camp at Davidovka, Ukraine. I am wondering if this is the same Davidovka and if the Soviet's took over the Nazi labor camp and converted it to a field hospital and/or POW camp. Does anyone have any information or suggestions on the Davidovka Hospital or Labor Camp? Paul Linhardt Pacific Grove, CA www.PaulLinhardt.com

His father was Israel Herman and his mother was Sophie (maiden name unknown) He is buried in the United Hebrew Cemetery. I called they for verification and he was buried by the Order of Brith Abraham Burial Society. He is in Block 39, Row 4, Grave 29. He is not the Abraham Herman I was looking for. Turns out mine died July 1917 in Manhattan! I would be happy it to send this out to anyone who might be related. Dear Genners, There are all kinds of reasons some of us may choose not
to put down our location and that includes personal experience and safety. Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I haven't read all the posts yet. As a victim of identity theft, I am extremely cautious giving out details about myself that are posted in a public forum. Keep in mind, these emails are kept in archives and can be found anytime in the future. Not that I would expect JewishGen to be a source of identity theft, however having lived through the torturous experience of reclaiming my name, identity and credit, I'm very paranoid about providing private information in a public record. I for one, might provide my specific location in private email exchange, but not in a public archived forum. We can still exchange family information even if we don't have a clue where each of us lives. Yes, I understand there are web sites abound that list address, phone number etc, but I can't do anything about those. However, I can at least not contribute to adding personal details to the world wide web. I am also familiar with a single mom (who shall remain anonymous, per her request) who refuses to enter her location because she was stalked by a stranger and was forced to move to a new town. She does not list her location for the safety of herself and her children. While I understand this kind of situation is very rare, the point I'm trying to make is that we all bring to the table our own personal experiences, so lets not jump the gun and make assumptions the person is being rude and simply not following the rules. There may be a very good reason. Besides, I honestly can't understand why anyone cares where I live -rules or no rules! So as a woman, I feel quite strongly for my personal safety that I simply don't want to post my location on any public forum. If the rules state that we have to list a city, maybe it's time to make some changes and provide more flexibility. Lastly, for those of you who choose not to contact us more private Genners because you want to know where we live and we choose not to tell you, then you risk never knowing if we hold the missing link to your family tree!!!
