Dear Stephen R. Low,

Just an idea, but can you hear Wermady as NYIRMADA in Szabolcs
county? It was called Nyir-Mad many years ago.

If anyone can help me with an accurate reading of an Ellis Island =20
manifest
it would be very helpful=85 I am unsure of his town of origin, which =20=
is repeated in the next column. The
index records this as "Wermady," but Google finds no such place.

Dear H-Siggers,

I have found out that my gt-grandmother, Malvine Prager (nee Pollack),
was born in Jaska in 1854, her father was Siegmund Pollack and mother
Charlotte (nee Spitzer). Malvine married ____ Prager (his given name;
and marriage where and when unknown). My grandfather Oskar Prager was
born in Kesztheley, Hungary. Oskar married Mela Bronner (where and
when unknown)

Jews born in Jaska were registered in in the Register book of birth of
Jewish religious community for Karlovac (for the period 1853-1880)
which is about 25 kilometers >from Jaska.

My search now includes:

PRAGER-
OSKAR PRAGER - Kesztheley, Hungary
POLLACK - (or POLLAK) - Jaska or Karlovac, Croatia
SPITZER

It appears that the family moved around quite a bit and I am not sure
of the actual origins of the PRAGER, POLLACK (or POLLAK), SPITZER
lines.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

A schochet did have to have a good reputation and be considered a
personal of high moral standing otherwise he would not be trusted to
be acting properly. Many shochtim had Yeshiva backgrounds and even
smicha since they had to know the laws of kashrut and ritual
slaughter. In smaller communities, the rabbi may have also acted as
the shochet (as was the case with my grandfather who was the rabbi
of a congregation in Greenfield Park, NY and was also the shochet).
The position is not hereditary, although I suppose that many
shochtim did teach their children the trade.

Re: Were Ellis Island kept medical records #general

Related to Mark's story about his grandfather not even being allowed
onboard due to trachoma:

I recall reading that as the immigrant migration began to swell, the
shipping lines were very eager to sell a ticket to anyone and
everyone. The US government began to issue restrictions designed to
keep it in check, and to keep at a minimum those people who might be
a drain on the government. One such restriction was that if a
potential immigrant was not allowed to enter the US, the shipping
line had to return the passenger to the originating port at their own
expense (the shipping line's). This caused the shipping lines to be
a bit more diligent about who was allowed to travel, and to watch for
potential medical issues, etc.

Viewmate Translation Help #general

Dear Cousins:

I have posted three postcards that were written in (Galician) Yiddish in
October and November, 1912. These cards are a part of a series >from that
decade written by relatives of the DEUTSCHER family in Rozniatow, Galicia
to the children of Chaim and Feiga DEUTSCHER in New York City.

The web address for Viewmate is
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp

These three cards are particularly notable because two of them VM7880 and VM
7881 were written in October, 1912 by (or for) my great grandfather Chaim
shortly before his death.

VM7883 was written by (or for) Feige. We think that this was written after
Chaim death (or while he was critically ill). Feige came to the U.S. in May,
1913 with her remaining children.

We are hopeful that these three cards will answer some important questions.
Better quality scans are available that could not be posted to Viewmate
because of the size restrictions.

Please reply directly to me at MLBISHOW@COMCAST.NET
