A town in Belarus? ViewMate 8848 #belarus

paulkozo@...

I'd be grateful if anyone can recognise the name of the town on this US 1917
draft card for Abraham E SADUR of Passaic NJ. The subject's brothers
claim to have been born in Svir - and another close relative came >from Smorgon.
So there's a good chance that it is in Belarus.

More about Simon Salomon #germany

אלי סמסון <samsonf@...>

Dear Gersigers,
Yesterday I asked for information about Walter SALOMON, born 1904 in Germany.
Today.about Simon SALOMON. His father Levy SALOMON started a clothes and textile shop in
Speicher (near Wittlich and Bitburg). His mother was Sara DUBLON >from the large and famous Dublon clan
of Wittlich which has an Internet site, and has hundreds of DUBLONs and their family tree.
Levy and Sara had Simon and two more sons - Siegmund (my grandfather) and David - both of them are
buried in Speicher' however their children and grandchildren left in time and live now with their large
families in Israel.
Simon SALOMON, born in Speicher 1873 became a well known author, writer, journalist and publisher.
He was murdered by the Nazis in Teresienstadt in 1943. Now the regional and local authorities of Speicher
decided to give the Realschule of Speicher the name of their famous Jewish citizen.
They asked Rafael Jacob and myself, the grandnephews of Simon, both of us living in Israel, for
permission to use the name and, this granted, invited us to participate at the ceremony and
spend a few days in Speicher and vicinity.
One day we spent in Wittlich and I said Kadish at the graves of my Great-grandparents
Sara and Levy SALOMON-more than 100 years after their death! The Naming Ceremony on October 27 was
a very impressive and festive event, with speeches by the Head of the Regional Council (of 270 villages),
the head of the local council, the representatives of the regional and local educational institutions,
the main religions, including the representative of the nearest Jewish community of Trier,
and Rafael and myself - the remaining relatives of Simon. All of them expressed their
commitment to remember Simon's German Patriotism as it was expressed in all his works and
never to forget that he was also a remarkable Jew and that only therefore he was killed in the dark
period of the Nazis. At the end of the ceremony the proud new name SIMON SALOMON REALSCHULE, SPEICHER was
uncovered.
Only during this visit did I learn that one of the sons of Simon SALOMON, Walter, succeeded in leaving to the U.S.A.
Now I ask you to help me to find him or his children and grandchildren.
thanks,
Eli Samson

Immigration details? #poland

George Mason <gmason3815@...>

I hope someone on the List can help me. I recently obtainied a copy of my
father's passenger manifest. He was Jewish, born in Warsaw, and immigrated
to the US >from the port of Southampton in February of 1939. Now, I
understand that it was not easy for a Jew to immigrate anywhere in 1939, so
I am interested to learn how my father may have been able to accomplish
this.

On the manifest, in Section 12, which is described as "Immigration
Visa, Passport Visa, or Reentry Permit Number (Prefix number with QIV, NQIV,
PV or NP and give section of Act involved)", for my father, it says, "Sec. 5
QIV 2802". Can anyone tell me what the details of this section might be that
allowed my father to come to America just 7 months before Germany attacked
Poland?

Thanks in advance for any help,
George Mason

the death date 27 March 1943 in Theresienstadt.

He has also entries in the Berlin and the German Memorial Books,

Holocaust era insurance policies #hungary

Tomer Brunner

some years ago the "Generali Fund" was established, in order to compensate
heirs of people who were insured by "Generali" company and perished in the
Holocaust.

People who think that their relatives had insurance policy, issued by
"Generali",
can contact the fund *** directly *** (without the help of lawyers, etc..)
and *** with with no cost at all ***.

"Generali Fund" do not publish a list of policy holders, but there is a site
which allows searching for policy holders of "Generali" and other companies.
The site is at www.pheip.org/search.asp

* I suggest that you enter only the surname and go through the all list of
results.
* Enter different spellings of your surnames.

If a person had insurance at "Generali" - it would *probably* be indicated
on this site.
(it seems that other companies are not specified, eventhough the names of
insured people are found on the site).

If you find a relative with "Generali" insurance policy (or if not and you
just want
to be sure...) I strongly suggest that you contact "Generali Fund" office
and ask for claim forms.
I know only the address of the office in Jerusalem:

1 Shazar st.
P.O.B 36311
Jerusalem 91360
ISRAEL

(if you are not located in Israel you might want to search for a local
office, if exists...)

If indeed they find a policy of your relatives then, besides the possible
payment that
the heirs might get, you can also get some genealogical details like:
Date and place of birth and occupation of the policy holder and name of
spouse.

As far as I know, the last date for submitting claims is January 2007, so
now is the time to do it!

Good luck!
