Gorodeya #belarus

CBS Computer Business Systems LTD. <cbsrap@...>

I am searching for information on Gorodeya, which is now in Belarus. This
town is located on the Minsk-Brest railway near Baranvichy, 94 KM. SW of
Minsk.

The current Belarus spelling is Garadzea. Other variations are Horodzie and
Horodziej.

My family name is FINE, which may have been spelled FAYN, FEYN, or FEJN.

I believe that our name was changed >from POPAK.

I would appreciate any clues to finding out about my family or general
information about this shtetl.

SEARCHING SCHERBAKOV #belarus

Carol Lieberman <cmenetwork@...>

I have just joined the sig, having spent most of my time on the Latvian,
Lithuanian connection. In the soundex, there are approximately 12
different ways to spell Scherbakov. This is the way I have found it in
documents, and some of the family became Sher,Sherr, and Sherbac. In the
United States, our family settled in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

My grandmother Hannah was the daughter of Norman and Naomi. They had many
other children. Peter (Pesach), Samuel, Sara, Herschel, Esther, born in
the 1860s or so. They emigrated >from Russia in 1894, having first
wandered >from Kiev through the Kovno district of Lithuania. Norman and
Naomi came in 1900 as very old people and they are now buried with the
Shers in Duluth, Minnesota.

My grandmother told me once about the city of her origin. Frankly, I am
only partially sure it was Minsk, and as their naturalization documents
and ship of arrival have yet to be uncovered (this will take a lot of
time until the arrivals for that year have been indexed) I have little
to go on.

I understand that at one time the family was well-to-do, and that
perhaps they were in the business of growing sugar cane or refining
it.Prior to the elder Sherbacov's leaving Russia, their last known
address was Vasilkov.

I will be in Salt Lake City doing research this fall, but I believe that
without the naturalization documents or arrival material, that looking
for these folks will continue to be as it has been these past few years
-- just a needle in a Russian haystack.

Sorry I missed the original posting. I know of a Ramie TRITT family,
originally >from Montreal, last living in Atlanta, GA.

Anita Berk

The group looking for the TRITT family should look in Montreal, Canada.
The family came to Montreal at the turn of the century and many members
still live there.

Searching GLICKLIN, VILENSKY from Bykhov #belarus

JudiTomFox@...

You are doing a fantastic job with your Belarus Digest. I tried going to
the Stolbtsy web page using the address given on 9-01-98, but kept getting a
404 Error Message and a notice that the page doesn,t seem to exist. How
should one go about finding this particular item?
Looking for GLICKLIN( GLIKLIN,GLIKIN,GLEKLIN,etc.) in Belarus primarily
around Bykhov. I have an old address of my great grandfather,Hershel Oreh (
Zvi Aryeh):# 4 Leniska Street, Staarey Bykhov. This address is >from around
1923/24. Also looking for VILENSKY (WILENSKY) >from Bykhov and/or Seletz.
Always thought that the city of Bykhov was in the Mogilev Gerbania. But now I
am not so sure. Is it possible that it could be in the Minsk Gerbania? Is
there a source one can go to to see in which G'bania a particular shetl is
located? Was Russia part of Sweden at one time? A GLICKLIN relative told me
that he thinks the family came >from Sweden.
I am also researching KARASIK >from around Gomel, Mogilev, and Korma. I am
interested in the siblings, descendents, ancestors of Shalom Piivish KARASIK..
Also am looking for ancestors, relatives of my great grandmother Leah
BAYEFSKY KARASIK. So am looking for BAYEFSKY or BYEFSKYor BAEVSKI,etc.from
the area around Mogilev.
Researching: GLICKLIN, WILENSKY, YAMNITSKY, KARASIK,BAYEVSKY, et al.

POLIAKOFF: a correction #belarus

Bryan Polikoff <polikoff@...>

Thank you all for such a lively and constructive response so far to my
posting about the Poliakoff dynasty. I have been informed by Schelly
Dardashti of Las Vegas of an error concerning the date of the rout of
Moghilev and am happy to put that right, and I quote:
As far as dates for Minsk and Mogilev, I think it was 1941, not 1942.
Nazis had already decimated the rural population about 20 km >from Mogilev in
October 1941. And the Minsk ghetto was in operation in 1941.
I have heard about the birth index and the LDS records. The thing is,
finding a lot of people with the same or similar family name gives you no
hint about how and if they are related. What we have here is the
beginnings of a vast and complex jigsaw which probably has many missing
pieces and may indeed be more than one jigsaw.

Dear Litvaksig friends,

I just got back >from a vacation and discovered that I have e-mail >from various
people on the names Cohen and Kagan in the Litvaksig database. After some
investigation I have discovered that my index of Jews resident in
Siauliai/Shavli/Shavel, which is referenced through the Shavli Shtetlinks
site, has been included in the Lithuania database. The references to Cohen
and Kagan in the source column, with page numbers refer to Shimon Cohen's book
in Hebrew about the History of the Jewish Community of Siauliai - printed in
Kovno in 1938, and to Berl Kagan's book about Lithuanian towns, in Yiddish,
printed in New York in 1990!!!

I must add that this index was included totally without my permission,
although I would have agreed had I been asked. It was not intended to be used
out of the context of the Shavli web-site, which explains the sources.
Perhaps we should be a little more careful and a little less hasty before
including material without an explanation, especially if my e-mail address is
included in the data!!!
