Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Charles Edelsburg [NY] tells us that he is writing a
biographical essay introducing a group of Yiddish
poems his father wrote while an inmate at
Sachsenhausen in 1944. He continues "I am therefore
in pursuit of any information or documentation
relating to my father. He was a Polish citizen, born
near Warsaw in Minsk Mazowiecki on March 22, 1907. He
may have served at some point prior to the war in the
Polish Army (no proof of this). As far as I know, at
the outbreak of the war, he was living in Lodz with
his wife and child. His name was Nuchim (Nachum)
EDELSBURG. He was in the Lodz Ghetto until 1943,
working, I am told, as a printer and was then sent to
several camps, including Sachsenhausen as a member of
a special group of counterfeiters working for an SS
group hoping to destabilize the British economy by
flooding it with forged Pound Sterling notes.

Charles will be interested to hear that there was a
most fascinating TV programme shown in the UK nearly
two years ago on this subject. The SS counterfeiting
operation was codenamed *Operation Bernhard*. In this
programme, four of the last-surviving forgers were
interviewed for the first time. They spoke of the
great pride in the technical expertise of their work
and how they knew that they had to maintain standards
as their lives depended on it. It was called: *The

4th 2004: see

Channel 4 will I am sure give more information to
Charles about how to contact these four survivors.
Hopefully, they are still alive - see

David Friedmann [born 1893 in Mahrisch Ostrau,
Moravia], worked as an artist in the Lodz ghetto and
may well have known Nuchim: The following incident
took place at “Metall II”, the factory where David
worked... the foreman suggested that he design a
triumphant Swastika Eagle hovering over broken flags
of the occupied nations of Europe, "Deutschland,
Deutschland ueber alles"... {he} was certain that for
such a piece of art the group would .. receive a
reward of additional food. In spite of the great
hunger [David] refused the commission and in a rage
screamed at the foreman for making such a vile
suggestion.

The word "Zyd" (the first letter pronounced like the 's' in 'pleasure') is
Polish for Jew. So the name Zydowie may mean "Jewish Town".

Does anyone know where the town of Zydowie is in the Ukraine? My
understanding was that the family came >from Zhitomir. Might this be
another name for Zhitomir or a nighbouring town?

Seeking Info re Solomon Almazov Pearl #general

Danny Schur <dannyschur@...>

Hello. My name is Danny Schur and I am a composer/producer of musicals in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I have composed a musical entitled "Strike!" about the 1919 Winnipeg General
Strike, which premiered here to much acclaim in 2005, and which is making
its way across Canada in the 2006 season. One of the characters in the
musical is the historical figure Moses (Moishe) Almazov. (I used the
"Almazoff" version of his name.) Moishe was wrongfully arrested in the 1919
General Strike and subsequently left Winnipeg for Toronto and then New York,
where he wrote for the Yiddish left wing paper, "Morgan Freiheit."

Everything I know about Moishe, I learned >from the research of fellow
Winnipeggers Roz Usiskin, who actually met Moishe in New York as late as the
70's or 80's, and Henry Tractenberg, who has researched the period
thoroughly. However, I can find no link to Mr. Almazov/Pearl after his move
to New York. Most specifically, I can not seem to find out whether he had
children, or whether there are any living descendants.

Although my musical is written, the ever-zealous researcher in me still
seeks more information about Moishe, especially as my production company now
heads down the path of movie adaptation of the musical. And should I be
able to bring the work to the U.S., it would be very fitting to have living
descendants attend.

So, does anybody know anything more about Moishe? He often wrote as Moses
Almazov, although he is listed in some sources as S. Almazov Pearl.

Thank you for your assistance. Any information would be most appreciated.

Sincerely, Danny Schur

How the Jews got to Lithuania #lithuania

Nachum Tuchman

Hi,

I would like to add that there is one thing missing >from Andrea Alpert
Ziegelman's historical description. Jews got to Europe, not only
during the Roman period, there were Jews there even before that. A
few weeks ago I mentioned a Jewish community in Worms that was founded
after the destruction of the first Temple, some 2500 years ago. The
fact that there were Jews doesn't mean that there were communities
with customs, and we probably don't know how many of those early
settlers left Jewish offspring.

Even if small numbers of Jews were in Europe by the end of the Roman
Empire, and survive as Jews till today, I would think that the bulk
came there starting around the 8th-9th centuries. They too came from
Italy, and formed the Ashkenazi communities that exist until today.

Nachum Tuchman
Tekoa, Israel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The original place of origin of our Litvak ancestors, as for all other Jews
is Eretz Yisrael. Our Litvak ancestors got to Lithuania in the following
way. In Roman times, before or after the Romans conquered Israel (called in
those days Judea) in 70 AD, Jews migrated to Rome and Italy.

To make a long story short, >from about 100 (or so)-1400 CE, there was a
Jewish presence in England, France and eastern Germany. In 1290 the Jews
were expelled >from England. In the 1300's the Jews were expelled from
France. During the 1300's and 1400's things in Germany were not so hot for
the Jews, while at the same time the kings of Poland were particularly
welcoming. The result was that the Jews migrated eastward, though some
stayed in Germany.
