Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Announcement - Sub-Carpathia Portal and Research Group mail list #ukraine

Marshall Katz

A Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list has been created for researchers
with Jewish roots in villages and towns located in present-day Ukraine
but were formerly located in those parts of the pre-1918 Hungarian counties
of Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, the 1918-1939 Czechoslovak territory
of Podkarpatska Rus' (Subcarpathia Russia) and the inter-war Hungarian
territory called Carpatho-Ukraine.

Please note that while, today, parts of Bereg are in Hungary/Ukraine,
parts of Maramaros are in Romania/Ukraine, parts of Ugocsa are in
Romania/Ukraine and parts of Ung are in Slovakia/Ukraine, this
discussion mail list is only concerned with those parts of these
four former Hungarian counties that are in present-day Ukraine.

For those parts of Bereg in Hungary/Romania today, Maramaros in Romania
today, Ugocsa in Romania today and Ung in Slovakia today, visit Hungary
SIG or Romania SIG, but you are welcome to sign-up for this list, too.

Additionally, to complement the Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list, a
Sub-Carpathia Portal (web site) was created for the specific purpose of
gathering, presenting and preserving genealogical and historical
information vabout Jewish life in Sub-Carpathia in the former Hungarian
counties of Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, as defined above. The web
site portal is always a work in-progress. Therefore, if you have content
of interest to all, to enrich the portal, please contact me via the e-mail
link at the portal.

To join the Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list, go to:

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Mass graves database to go online #ukraine

cmw521@...

Information gleaned >from Father Patrick Desbois' years-long search for mass
Jewish graves in Eastern Europe will soon be made available on a database.
Desbois' organization, Yahad-In Unum, has joined with the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum and the American Jewish Committee to set up an online
database of his findings since 2004 of mass graves in more than 600 towns
and villages in Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Poland.

The database, known as Traces, will be available by midsummer on Yahad-In
Unum's website (http://www.yahadinunum.org/en/) or at the museum's website
(http://www.ushmm.org).

Each village report will include summaries and extracts of videotaped
testimony by eyewitnesses to the mass shootings of Jews, Roma and Soviet
prisoners in the East by the Nazis and their allies. The database joins a
number of other Holocaust-era online information search sites that have been
made available recently through the U.S. Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem, the
U.S. National Archives and other institutions.

Desbois focuses on the first phase of the Holocaust in which German troops
murdered an estimated 1 million people in mass shootings; he says his work
is only half done. Hannah Rosenthal, the State Department envoy in charge
of combating anti-Semitism, said she hopes to help Desbois continue his
research by "twinning" American Jewish communities with possible gravesites.

I have no other information on this project, but the websites noted above
have additional information on both Desbois' work and his book, "Holocaust
by Bullets".

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Family name #ukraine

GeoestherL@...

The name of a maternal relative >from Moldavia has been recorded as
Dobryshof (spelled with an f) in a personally hand written record.
This same name is recorded as Dobrish in U.S. immigration records.
Can someone enlighten me if this is similar to the "son of" ending
in other names that is frequently dropped, and not a significant
difference.

Hungarian Surnames #hungary

Alex Magocsi

Melchior Lengyel was a Hungarian writer who was born Lebovics Menyhe'rt.

My first question pertains to his surnames. Is Menyhe'rt the Hungarian
equivalent of Melchior?
In pursuing my own family history, I have seen both names used for, I
believe, the same person, in documents >from the late 18th century in
Gyula-Jovancza.

The second question:
Is the female surname Erzset equivalent to Erzsebet and Elisabeth?
Here again, I believe I am seeing this surname used for the same person.

Thank you for any feedback that can be provided.

what does the record actually say? in hungarian, brother in law is
so'gor, and nephew is unokao:cs. there is no similarity between the
two, and i'm not aware of any other (hungarian) terms that might have
similar meanings

Now into the mix comes someone called in the registers "Samuel". He
cannot be one of the others for there are overlapping births. His
son is referred to as either "brother in law" or "nephew" in the
death notice of the wife of Slajm in 1908. (Apparently the words
are not specific).

Kassa Archives 1857 Census #hungary

Regarding the 1857 census: I have been to the Kassa/Kosice Archive, and was able to see it for all the places I requested (I did not request the city of Kassa itself). So are you quite certain it is unavailable?
