Underground Passage for Children #austria-czech

Nyjrs56@...

Good Day to all,

My name is Jennifer Spier-Stern. This is the first time posting to this SIG
group. My Jewish line is through my father who was born in Germany. My
mother, Helene Anna Trunec was born in Vienna on Feb. 25 1930, her family was
Roman Catholic and Evangelists.

The reason I am writing today is as follows. My mother, who passed away a
few years ago, told me a story that her parents were part of an underground
mission to help Jewish children. She said that at least once a week or
month, in the middle of the night, someone would knock on their door and hand
over one or two children. My grandparents and my uncle and mother lived in
a house in Breitenlee, (an area on the outskirts of Vienna), The children
were placed in the crawl space between the slanted roof and the wall of the
room. My mother said she would have to go with branches and sweep the
front of the house and yard.

She said she always wondered what happened to these children. I have no
idea how many passed through their house. My mother did not recall if names
were exchanged.

Does anyone have any knowledge about an underground mission where children
were taken >from place to place?

Thank you,
Jennifer Spier-Stern _nyjrs56@aol.com_ (mailto:nyjrs56@aol.com)

with the Transcarpathian oblast archives in Ukraine, I would like to

original article is in Ukrainian, but you can translate it (somewhat)
using Google Translate:

Correction to posting Romania before the two WW #romania

Susanna Vendel

It should be: Romania between the two WW, as many members pointed out to me.
The mistake is not due to anything else than lack of attention :) Sorry!

I came across this website in Romanian language.

Another data base to see if a name is possibly Jewish is the yadvashem.org
database of Holocaust victims. These names are not exclusively Jewish,
but a total absence of a names being present here is a good sign that such a
name did not exist in Jewish families. Havanchak does not appear in the
Yad Vashem data base.

JewishGen for your family name. Normally, if the records for your family
name don't exist in the database then that would mean you are barking up the
wrong ancestral tree. In the case of the Havanchak family, there are no
listed records for them.

Other databases which are helpful are Ancestry.com which has roots.web and
other family tree areas where you can contact other researchers who are
looking for your family name. Familysearch.com also has records which can
help, especially church records. In the case of the Havanchak family, there
are many records listed on both sites which lead one to believe they are a
non-Jewish family.

More From Ancestry On Their "Retiring" Old Search #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Ancestry.com has read many of the comments since they announced their
intention to retire "old search" within the next six months. I forwarded
to Ancestry.com the comments of those who wrote to me. Ancestry.com
requested that I share with you that they want your feedback as a result of
the comments >from all sources since they announced the "old search"
retirement.

Ancestry.com is looking for feedback on their search function as part of
their effort to improve the users experience on their site. They want to
get feedback >from their core users and then they will take that feedback
into account when they merge the functionality of "old search" and current
search into a consolidated search experience.

Ancestry is inviting the users to take a survey which may be accessed at:
http://tinyurl.com/lx7fuep
Original url: http://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8ubNXU8IiQcxqVD

According to Ancestry, many of the recent concerns and comments have cited
functionality that actually exists in current search, as well as in old
search - specifically:
current search experience allows users to:
o view search results as a list of ranked records or as a consolidated
list of categories.
o do "Exact Match" searches.
o specify a "Collection Priority" to filter results by country.

Crista Cowan, the "barefoot genealogist" who lectures at the IAJGS
International Conferences on Genealogy, including the one this coming
August, has an educational video which demonstrates this functionality in
the current search experience:
http://tinyurl.com/mr97apc
original url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c423yU5Ccs0

Ancestry.com also has a helpful article which does a side-by-side
explanation of how to achieve the same types of results with the current
search as in Old Search: http://tinyurl.com/pq9jqbs
Original url:
