JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Vienna SIG meeting?
#austria-czech
I will be in Vienna July 3-13. At the very least I want to take my
usual tour of the overgrown family graves in the Zentralfriedhof. Maybe this time I will also finally arrange to go inside Waehringer Friedhof. If anyone else is there in July, maybe we can set up an Austria-Czech meeting. Randy Schoenberg (in Granada today)

Lezajsk 1853 Cadastral Map (& Metrical Records) added to Gesher Galicia's website

Pamela Weisberger
Another extraordinary 19th century property map has been added to the
Gesher Galicia Cadastral Map Room by our map room coordinator, Jay Osborn. It's for the town of Lezajsk in the Rzeszow Kreis (Circle( and it is a real beauty! Even if this is not "your "town, take a moment look at the scope, detail and "uncommon layout" of this cartographic masterpiece. Le=BFajsk Town Cadastral Map 1853 http://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/lezajsk-lizhensk-1853/ A complete full-color lithographed cadastral map of the town of Lezajsk (Lizhensk, Lezaysk, Lezajsk) >from 1853. Land parcels and houses are all clearly numbered; redline manuscript revisions show changes >from the 1853 edition intended for a later update. The town has an uncommon layout, with three significant clusters of houses connected by roads through the fields. The map includes both masonry and wooden buildings, a market square, a synagogue, three churches and a monastery, a Catholic cemetery, and a large Jewish cemetery with the grave of Rebbe Elimelech. An unusual feature of this map is two paper patches northwest of the town centers, correcting errors in the original drafting of the town cadastral border. Images for this map were provided to Gesher Galicia by the Archiwum Panstwowe w Przemyslu. Gesher Galicia has companion metrical record databases in the All Galicia Database (AGD) to go with the maps: Lezajsk Jewish Birth Index (1881-1890) (1,353 records) Lezajsk Jewish Marriage Index (Grooms Only) (1877-1938) (1,239 records) To search the All Galicia Database go to: http://search.geshergalicia.org To view all of our maps go to: http://maps.geshergalicia.org Thanks for Brooke Schreier Ganz for continuing to add data sets to the AGD, and, as always, to Jay Osborn who continues to toil for GG wherever in the world he may be. Norbert KATZ and Brit Hakoah
#general
Judith Elam
Norbert KATZ was a player on the famous Viennese football team, Hakoah, and
organizer of Brit Hakoah in Britain. He was born in 1900 in Vienna, and died in Hendon, Middlesex in 1979. His wife Agnes was born in 1904, and died in Harrow, Middlesex in 2000. I am assisting someone with his genealogy. He is related to Norbert KATZ and is searching for the daughters of Norbert and Agnes KATZ. Their names are Josephine and Susan, or Suzanne. They were probably born in the 1920's, either in Vienna or in England. Any information as to their whereabouts, or any descendants, would be much appreciated! Judith Elam Kihei, HI elamj@...

A friend is travelling to Poland with a group, but her ancestral towns are
Oborin, Slovakia and Svalyava, Ukraine. She is considering taking a side trip to one or both and is concerned about the safety of crossing the border between those two countries. If there is anyone who has any advice about conditions on the ground, border crossings, etc., and/or is willing to converse with her via email, please contact me ASAP. She is leaving in less than a month. Thanks in advance. Steve Stein Highland Park, NJ USA Moderator: Please send suggestions off-list.

cadastral maps
#hungary
Ruben Weiser
Hi to all.
I will like to share with you a web page I just seen that helped me a lot. http://archivportal.arcanum.hu/kataszter/ you can choose a county and see a cadastral map of your town for the year 1857 (if survived) it has the names of all the house owners ,so you can find your ancestor house location. If the map don't have space to name the house owner there is a list of the names with the house numbers around the towns in the map. I will like to have more info about this maps, like: If a town is not mentioned in there this means that that town map didn't survive? or is in another archive? Are there any cadastral maps with names of house owners for other years? Thanks Ruben weiser Buenos Aires Argentina

Kassa / Kosice directories now searchable
#hungary
Logan Kleinwaks
Directories for Kassa / Kosice for 1891-1898 and 1900, Kassai Kalauz
Czimtara and Kassai Kalauz Czim-Naptar, are now full-text searchable at http://genealogyindexer.org. They also include some administrative, business, and organizational listings >from outside Kassa, elsewhere in Abauj-Torna County. Search results link to scans of the corresponding pages on the Cassovia Digitalis website (http://cassovia-digitalis.eu). Thanks to Andras Hirschler for posting about the availability of these directories. If you know of any other online scanned sources that should be made searchable, or if you have physical copies that you are willing to scan or have scanned, please contact me. Searches at http://genealogyindexer.org include the Kassa directories and all 1600 other sources by default. To limit your results geographically, change the "Any Place" option below the search box to Hungary, Hungary > Abauj-Torna County, Slovakia, or Slovakia > Kosice. In the list of search results, source titles are links to the scanned pages on the Cassovia Digitalis website. Those images should be zoomed in sufficiently to be legible, but might not display the entire page on your screen. You can change the part of an image that is visible by clicking on it with your mouse and dragging it up or down while still holding the mouse button. Be careful about inadvertently dragging to the left or right, though, as that will "turn the page" in the Cassovia Digitalis display system and jump to the next or previous image. If you do not wish to search the directories, but instead browse them, you can find links at http://genealogyindexer.org/directories#Slovakia. Logan Kleinwaks kleinwaks@... near Washington, D.C.
