JGS of Long Island Meeting #general

Jackie Wasserstein

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island invites you to join us at our
Sunday, November 23, meeting.

Time: 2:00 PM
Place: Mid-Island Y JCC 45 Manetto Hill Road Plainview, New York
_www.miyjcc.org_ (http://www.miyjcc.org)

Topic: "The Name Remains the Same: Adventures in Finding Sid Caesar's
Grandmother"

Guest Speaker: Robin Meltzer

After Sid Caesar passed away in February 2014, hundreds of press reports
repeated the myth that the family's name had been "changed at Ellis Island"
on their arrival >from Austria. Careful research proved that the family's
surname remained unchanged >from the time they lived in Galicia. This
presentation will explain the search techniques used to find the embarkation list
and passenger list for Sid Caesar's grandmother and how others can apply
these methodologies to their own research.

Robin Meltzer is the V.P. of Communications for the Jewish Genealogy
Society of Greater Washington. She is the assistant producer of "Stories >from
the Syracuse Jewish Community". She has written several articles on Jewish
Genealogy and local history for the Jewish Observer of Central New York and
for Mispacha, the journal of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater
Washington. She has 30 years of genealogic research experience.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Our "Mavens" are available at 1:30
PM to take your genealogy questions.

Re: Mt. Hebron cemetery, Queens, on-line info #general

Hanna Grossman <hannakg@...>

A dozen people have very kindly answered my question and directed
me to the cemetery's searchable own site.

On this site I find that one of the brothers I am researching Irmin
(or Irwin) E. COHEN who died 9/26/1977 and is buried in section
81-5-10-20 has a woman, Arline Cohen, who died 1/28/1991, buried
next to him in section 81-5-10-21. It seems reasonable to think
that they were man and wife, but the ItalianGenealogical Group shows
no marriage for him, nor does any other source I can find.

So, I am reduced to hoping the gravestones provide more information
and that someone will be willing to look at these stones for me.
Section 81 is right along the Van Wyck if that helps.

Irmin's brother, Bertram is buried at 81-5-9--3 , without a woman
near him.

Their father Gus, and mother Bertha, are both buried in 81-5-PP11-1.
The section also has 9 other Cohens whom I cannot identify but who
may be related to Gus. Since it is Berta (b. ESSINGER) to whom I am
related, I am not concerned, unless they are young enough to be the
children of Irmin or Bertram.

If anyone can look at these stones and provide more information, I
will be grateful.

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Family History - Story - Similar Stories #ukraine

Paul Finelt

Many of us have heard family horror stories that involve one or more
of our ancestors. Our story follows:

Sometime about 1917, my paternal grandmother Malka, was pushed off a
ferry boat and drowned while crossing the Dniester River near the
towns of Rascov/Vadul Rascov.

The family story says she was pushed off the ferry by thugs who knew
she had valuables on her (they were fleeing Petlura or another
Ukrainian Nationalist gang (sound familiar?)

Her family witnessed the event and were helpless. The found her body
days later and buried her in the cemetery nearby.

There is no doubt about the veracity of the story.

I was wondering if anyone else has heard of similar events in their family.

Thank you for sharing your story, either on or off LINE.

Best regards,
Paul Finelt

Hello,

I am in search for a photo (or a way to obtain one) of a tombstone or
two in Nagy-Kosztolan (Modern Velke Kostolany, Slovakia).
Search in the known Slovakian cemeteries database did not bring any
results. Does anyone have another idea of how can I find such a thing,
knows of anyone who visits the area, or has any other advice?
The specific name I am looking for is Rabbi Bernat Lichtenstein who
died there in 1890 and supposed to be buried there, I presume
alongside his wife.

Thank you on advance,

Belarus. I have no further information on them.

Golde-Beylya circa 1887 married David PERELMUTER circa 1889 >from Lomazy,
Belarus. I have no further information on them.

Norma born 21 May 1897 in Brest-Litovsk, Belarus died 13 Jan 1990 Los
Angeles, CA. She married her cousin Benjamin OSEPLANSKY born 15 Nov 1889
in Russia(?) died 7 Sep 1953. They had one: daughter Gloria and two
sons: Alfred born 28 Oct 1922 died 28 May 2007 Riverside, CA, and Jacob.

Rivka born 21 Oct 1899 in Brest-Litovsk, Belarus. I have no further

Gravestone information needed from the Alter Judischer Friedhof-Frankfurt am Main #general

Karen Catania

Dear Jewish Gen,

I have been searching for my 2nd Great Grandmother's death for about
2 years now. Her maiden name was Gutel KATZ (KATZENSTEIN) born
December 20, 1829. Her married name was SCHOTT, first name she was
later called Julie or Julia.

I recently saw that on "Find A Grave" there was a Julie Schott who
died and was buried in the Alter Judischer Friedhof in Frankfurt am
Main. I would like to see a photo of this grave and know what it
says on the Headstone, and would also like to know if there is a way
to contact someone at the cemetery that may have more information on file.

This was the number on "Find A Grave" 127699872. If anyone can either
go there or find me someone who knows more, please contact me. I would
like to confirm that this was in fact her.

Thank you so much!

2. married Esther aka Bessie in England or South Africa
3. son, Harry was born in Port Elizabeth about 1902 (but could be
