Yes I am trying to figure out why my Great-Grandfather who said he was a
German-Jew

But we are slowly finding out that he might have been a Slovak.

He was born in 1888 in Europe and possibly came to Canada as an orphan in 1892.

Of course this happened long before the Holocaust but has ALWAYS been an intense
Family Mystery.

Sorry if my post is off topic.

All Galicia Database updated -- Jagielnica, Obertyn, Sniatyn, Ulaszkowce, and more #galicia

Brooke Schreier Ganz <asparagirl@...>

Just in time for the 2015 IAJGS conference in Jerusalem, Gesher Galicia
has added ten new data sets to the free All Galicia Database. These
records come >from towns in the former Austro-Hungarian province of
Galicia, which is today southeastern Poland and southwestern Ukraine.
The newest data sets are:

- Bialoboki - Homeowners list (1849)
[now Bialoboki, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland]

- Jagielnica - Jewish death records (1817-1861)
[now Yahilnytsya, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine]

- Obertyn - Jewish marriage index (1861-1938)
[now Obertyn, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine]

- Podhajce - Tax list (1936)
[now Pidhaitsi, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine]

- Rudki - Jewish marriage index (1898-1939)
[now Rudky, L'viv oblast, Ukraine]

- Sniatyn - Jewish marriage announcements register
(1922-1935; 1939)
[now Snyatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine]

- Strzeliska Nowe - Homeowners list (1848)
[now Novi Strilyshcha, L'viv oblast, Ukraine]

- Ulaszkowce - Jewish birth records (1891)
[now Ulashkivtsi, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine]

- Ulaszkowce - Jewish death records (1897)
[now Ulashkivtsi, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine]

- Zagorze - Homeowners list (1851)
[now Zagorz, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland]

The All Galicia Database is totally free to use and search, with no
logins required. With this update, we now have 324,442 records from
148 different data sources, with several big new data sets due to come
in the next few months.

Search the database anytime at:
http://search.geshergalicia.org/

Or check out the home page of Gesher Galicia at:
http://www.geshergalicia.org/

Gesher Galicia is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, which means that
your membership fees and donations are tax-deductible in the United
States. You can become a member for as little as $36 per year, which
grants you access to some great members-only benefits:
http://www.geshergalicia.org/membership/

On that membership page, you can also direct donations to particular
projects or towns of interest. That way, we can seek out, digitally
photograph, transcribe, upload, and make searchable any new records
from your towns of interest, adding them into the All Galicia Database
in future releases.

148 different data sources, with several big new data sets due to come
in the next few months.

Search the database anytime at:
http://search.geshergalicia.org/

Or check out the home page of Gesher Galicia at:

Gesher Galicia is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, which means that
your membership fees and donations are tax-deductible in the United
States. You can become a member for as little as $36 per year, which
grants you access to some great members-only benefits:
http://www.geshergalicia.org/membership/

On that membership page, you can also direct donations to particular
projects or towns of interest. That way, we can seek out, digitally
photograph, transcribe, upload, and make searchable any new records
from your towns of interest, adding them into the All Galicia Database
in future releases.

If you are planning to attend the IAJGS Conference on Jewish Genealogy
in Jerusalem >from July 6-10 and have not yet registered to attend the
LitvakSIG Luncheon on July 7, you only have a few days left to do so.

Deadline to register for conference luncheons is July 2.

The LitvakSIG Luncheon will feature Ephriam Lapid, Israeli Brigadier
General (Retired), whose mother and father emigrated separately
from Lithuania to Mandate Palestine in the 1930s.
This is >from the background that he submitted to the conference
website:

"Being the son of Litvaks: I was born into and grew up in a household
of Yiddish and Hebrew language, culture, customs and history. I learned
about the two gymnasium, Hebrew Riali and Shwabe in Kovno. I knew
respect for the Ponevesz, Slobodka and Telsiai yeshivas. I knew that
on Shabat we would eat tzimmes or plum tzimmes, blintzes or latkes and
kreplach. I invite you to enter my world of being the son of Litvaks".
