JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Final word from the Seattle 2016 Conference
#hungary
Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>
If you attended the Conference, did you get to every session you wanted
to see? Did you hear buzz about sessions you wish you had been to? What about the one that created an Aha! moment you want to recapture (like Devin Naar's keynote or Judy Russell's banquet talk)? You still can subscribe to the LIVE! on-demand service that will let you watch many of the best sessions of the past week after you get home. You can subscribe on line, for 90 days of on-demand viewing for $179. On-demand viewing is good through 12 November 2016 To subscribe, go to the Attendee Service Center, log in, select Buy LIVE!, Edit your account, and click Continue to the page with the LIVE! Full Add On check box. Check it and continue to the confirmation and payment pages. The Attendee Service Center will remain open next week, but don't procrastinate, because we will have to close it soon. For those who did not register for the Conference, please give us a chance to regroup for a couple of days. Then, beginning 15 August, go to the New Registration page at https://s4.goeshow.com/iajgs/annual/2016/registration_form.cfm We don't know how long we can keep that page open, so please do it before August 19. Prostejov "old" cemetery website
#austria-czech
Joseph Lonstein
I apologize if this has already been posted to the SIG, but today I came across
a very interesting and informative website for a restoration project of the "old" Prostejov cemetery. http://prostejov.zidovskyhrbitov.cz/ The description of the project (thanks to Google Translate) is: "These websites provide information about the project for rehabilitation of the old Jewish cemetery in Prostejov, who wants to return this ruined monument on the spiritual map of the city. At the place where it was in the years 1801 to 1908 are buried nearly two thousand people, is now a car park and a park where people >from the neighborhood come to walk the dogs. The main intention is to return the entire area with human dignity remains necessary in terms of Jewish tradition and simultaneously allow the functioning of the follow-up residential area, including the neighboring school. This will provide valuable cultural monument that will enrich the current Prostejov. The initiator and benefactor of the project is Rabbi Louis Kestenbaum. We appeal to the general public with a request for information to previously existing tombstones or other evidence about the history of the site of the old Jewish cemetery in Prostejov, such as photos, newspaper articles, recorded memories or official documents." The links on the site contain pictures, maps, a list of the buried, and links to news articles related to the project. I have no additional information about this project or the website. News scans from the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People
#austria-czech
I returned home >from the conference in Seattle to find, at last, a
package >from the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem with a USB drive of a number of scanned items >from their collection dealing with Bohemia and Moravia. This was the result of discussions I had last year at the conference in Jerusalem. I was able to arrange to pay for the scanning of items that I thought might be of interest. I have not been able to review them yet, but everyone is free to see them. I put it all in a DropBox folder at http://tinyurl.com/hapvbtg. There is an Excel spreadsheet of the inventory I was sent, with the scanned items highlighted, at http://tinyurl.com/gu2asot. Please feel free to browse through these newly available items and let us know when you find something interesting. If there are other items of interest in the spreadsheet that have not yet been scanned, we now have a mechanism to obtain them. If someone wants to sponsor scanning of any items, please let me know. Leukemia Diagnosis and DNA Testing
#austria-czech
kendrickkreations@...
We have been searching our BLOCH, DZIEKIEWICZ, KWASNY, and RING lineage for
decades. Recently, my 1st cousin was diagnosed with leukemia and had to have a DNA test. Last night, I was doing the online activation of my own DNA test that had arrived in the mail, not knowing my cousin had to take one because of his illness. As I was typing in the activation code this information pops up >from my cousin via FB; "You might be interested in this tidbit to help our genealogy... my 10 for 10 DNA stem cell transplant match is Polish and works as a driver there." Now, we were always told that we were German. Our research leaned towards something else, but we didn't have documented proof. Our research also seems to disprove a great deal passed down through the years. Do yourself a favor for your health knowledge and your research - invest in a DNA test. My test will be mailed today and it will be a long 6-8 week wait to learn the results! Medicinal Cupping
#ukraine
Richard Cooper
I always thought that cupping was a discredited medieval practice that
had fallen out of favour by the late 18th century. Although I knew it had been practised by our ancestors in Eastern Europe less than 100 years ago (apparently the children dreaded wet bankes as it was a lot more painful than dry bankes - see 'The Shtetl Book' (Diane & David Riskies, Ktav Publishing 1979)), I thought it was no longer in vogue. Then a Russian friend told me it had been used to treat her as recently as the 1980s, and I saw Michael Palin undergoing it in (I think) Ukraine in his BBC 'New Europe' travelogue in 2006.
