JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

On the Special Inquiry page, also on a Detained Aliens page are two
columns: Group and Number These identify the main manifest page and the line where the passenger can be found. The Group identifier is usually a large letter (sometimes a number) in the upper right or upper left of each manifest page. David Rosen Boston, MA

ViewMate requests in Russian, late 1890s Poland records
#general
David W. Perle
Hi, all. I have two death certificates >from the late 1890s in
Kalisz, Poland, that I would love to please receive full translations of. There's also a birth certificate of a little girl who was apparently born soon after one of them died and named after them, and I would love to just get the basic details about her, particularly who her parents were. (I don't really need the full translation. Just the basic personal details such as date, parents and their parents assuming that's given, occupations, whatever else?) Thanks to all who provide these translations, it is so helpful and appreciated! http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM50303 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM50304 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM50305 David Perle Washington, DC Researching PRZEGRODA, BLUM, PERLE, ARONOWSKY, SCHNEIDEROVSKY, SMOLEY/SMOLA, GOTTLIEB, KROLL, SKORA... Old Guard Regiment of NYC
#general
John Anderson
My great grandfather, Solomon ANDERSON (1856-1930), was born in
Poughkeepsie, New York. I know he was a member of the Old Guard regiment of NYC since an obituary notice placed by the Old Guard of the City of New York refers to him as Captain Sol ANDERSON. He died 07 Mar 1930, and the funeral was in Temple Emanu-El on March 9. I also have a photograph of him marching down Broadway with his regiment dressed in the full Old Guard regalia (beaver hats, etc.). I have never been able to confirm this, however, despite many years searching. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can get information about his service? John Anderson, Orlando, Florida

I'm hoping someone can help me with translating abbreviations I have
found on tombstones in Lithuania. I have the abbreviations in Hebrew characters and can send the short list to anyone who might be able to help me with that. The challenge is not the dates but the abbreviations describing the person or his/her situation. Please write to me privately. Thank you. Carol Hoffman saftacarol@gmail.com

Genealogist Ron Arons to give two presentations at JGSI Sept. 25 meeting
#general
events@...
Expert Jewish genealogist and author Ron Arons will deliver two
informative presentations at the Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois, starting at 1 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill. The titles of his talks at this special meeting will be "Putting the Flesh on the Bones" and "Evaluating Evidence: Asking a mini-Minnie Question." Ron Arons calls "Putting the Flesh on the Bones" his "bread and butter talk" that he has given for 15 years. Through two related examples he explains how one can piece together ancestors' lives by collecting as much documentation about them as possible as well as by looking at the environments where they lived. The process he describes can enable a genealogist to go beyond the names, dates, and places commonly associated with genealogical research. With his other presentation, "Evaluating Evidence: Asking a mini-Minnie Question," Arons explains that researching the lives of our ancestors is a big task, but to evaluate evidence, one needs to examine the bits and pieces of our research. When he found the bigamy case of his great-grandfather Isaac Spier, he wanted to know what happened to Spier's second wife, Minnie Ott. Arons will present the basic constructs of analyzing documents and evidence, i.e., the genealogical proof standard, pointing to the research question: How many times did Minnie Ott marry? In this presentation, he will apply the evaluation theory to the documents he located toward the resolution of this question. Arons has given more than 250 presentations internationally, and has authored three books, "The Jews of Sing Sing: Gotham Gangsters and Gonuvim"; "WANTED!: U.S. Criminal Records Sources & Research Methodology," and "Mind Maps for Genealogy: Enhanced Research Planning, Correlation, and Analysis." For more information about Ron Arons and the Sept. 25 JGSI meeting, see http://jgsi.org/event-2207576 . The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois schedule of future events can be seen at http://jgsi.org/Events-calendar or phone 312-666-0100.
