JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Rzeszow PSA 1910 Census includes the following for the PREISLER family:
Adolf born 1863 born in Zolynia (father)-father Franciszka 1870 born in Rzeszow-mother Their children: Aleksander (M) born 1897 Anna (F) born 1898 Stanislawa (F) born 1902 Kazimierz (F) born 1904 Jozef (M) born 1908 Adam (M) born 1910 I know what happened to Adam once he moved to the USA, but I don't know where he or his siblings or his parents went after this census in 1910. The children were all born in Rzeszow and their mother as well. I searched for them in the USA, and I haven't found them at all. Does anyone know where to go with this information? They didn't fall off the face of this earth after 1910. I would so appreciate any help any of you can give me. Best Regards, Dina Aptekar Hill

In the 20 years since I purchased a copy of Chaim Freedman's 1997 book,
"Eliyahu's Branches," I have researched my first cousin's vague claim of our being related to "the most famous Rabbi in Russia," and decided the closest identification and verification I can make is a somewhat distant relationship through my verified connection to the BLANKFORTl family, and specifically to the Rebecca Blankfort KRAMER family related to/descended from Tuviah JURBARSKY.In addition to reuniting with Blankfort relatives, finding source documents for the family, I have recently had a Blankfort family member do autosomal DNA testing, and her results further confirm the connection. I am interested in a few things that readers may be able to help me with. First, do you have any sources, or can point me toward any sources, to update the information on these related families? Second, a Blankfort relative who has been recently DNA tested writes, "I remember my grandfather Barney telling us that we were direct descendants of the Abarbanels of Spain and direct descendants of King David." I have tried relatively unsuccessfully to find any documentary support for this claim, and only mild DNA evidence of any Sephardic connection of members of the family that in modern times is Ashkenazi. Any thoughts and suggestions about that would be most welcome in my investigation of this claim. Third, on page 289 of "Eliyahu's Branches," Yekhezkel (Charles) Kramer death date is given as 1951. Another source by Dr. Neil Rosenstein, "The Gaon of Vilna and His Cousinhood," also published in 1997, provides a different year of death [1945]. I am seeking more information about this and other related family members. Thank you in advance for your insights and assistance. Warmest regards, Jeff Miller Maryland, U.S.

New York Jewish fraternities/orders/lodges
#general
Jeff Miller
A cousin reports that he has a walking stick that was given to an ancestor
named Mordecai Dov Ber Kramer, Charles (Ezekiel) Kramer's father, that bears the inscription "MB Kramer." It was presented on April 6 1914 by "The NY Lodge, No. 16, OBA" - Does anyone recognize this abbreviation or know about the presenting organization; possibilities might be the "Grand Lodge Order sand Brith Abraham" Was this a Masonic Order? Was that spelling correct? Or was it "Grand Lodge Orders and Brith Abraham" [OBA could be Order of Brith Abraham?] That sounds very Jewish - could it be interpreted as Order of Covenant of Abraham? Could it be a Jewish fraternal order? Was B'nai Brith connected to Masonic orders? I'd be interested in resources related to New York Jewish fraternities/orders/lodges. Thank you, Jeff Miller Maryland

buried in a plot, is not unheard of. There may have been financial or personal circumstances that lead to this. (a widow might have had her own plot paid for, but might not have had the means to buy another plot for her son, etc.) To clarify the religious aspects, you should probably consult an orthodox rabbi. ....... tom klein, Toronto

Entries in the new NYC (pre 1930) marriage license database, that don't have NYC marriage certificates.
#general
Mark London <mrl@...>
Hi - I was just shown new hints on ancestry.com, for NYC marriage licenses
from the new NYC database of applications (pre 1930), that were obtained byReclaim the Records. I've already come across 2 cases, for which there is no NYC corresponding certificate. I know that the marriages definitely occurred, but I don't know where they occurred. I decided to search for names on one page of this new database, and discovered that there quite a number of people, who did not have NYC marriage certificates. from what I can tell, an NYC marriage license, would allow you to be marriedanywhere in the state of New York. So it's possible that these marriages didn't actually occur in NYC. Or would there be a more likely reason why a NYC marriage, would not have resulted in an NYC marriage certificate? As an aside, I came across a 3rd case >from the new license database, in which the ancestry.com NYC marriage certificate database, did not contain an entry for the marriage certificate. But the Italian Genealogy NYC site, did have an entry for the marriage certificate. I don't know how common that occurs, though. FWIW! Mark London Natick, MA

Kosice Civil Vital Records - another update
#hungary
Good afternoon all,
It's me again with another update about Kosice Vital Records acquisition and transcription. I'm glad I can inform you that all civil marriage records >from Sep 1895 until July 1914 have been captured and transcribed and are now pending quality checks before they will be uploaded to JewishGen. There are more than 700 records to be processed. It is true that at leas half of the events are already online (source: Kosice Jewish vital records), however these often complement the published ones with e.g. full date of births or other details. In addition, they contain also Orthodox community records (those missing >from already published) and also mixed marriages (like when groom or bride wasn't Jewish). I trust they will be available online in short time and you will all benefit >from it. Now I'm going to start the work on death records (again: civil records) and I hope I'll finish my work until end of June. So let me use this oportunity to encourage you once again to participate in this project by contributing to H-SIG General Fund, so all archive fees could be covered. For those who haven't heard of the project, please visit my (quite simple) pages at: http://hsig.absolon.eu - where you can find all the details, covered area and of course ways to contribute. Kind regards, Peter Absolon Kosice, Slovakia

The quarterly addition of new data to our All Lithuania Database (ALD) is
now searchable online. This is the final addition prior to this summer's conference in July. A summary of the new data uploaded to the ALD for the 2nd Quarter of 2017 follows. The Grand Total of New Lines of data is 45,409. Revision List Template (Total Lines 17,083): Records for Kaunas District, Oshmiany District, Panevezys District, Suwalki Guberniya, Ukmerge & Utena Districts and Vilnius District. Tax & Voters List Template (Total Lines 19.093) Records for many towns in Panevezys District, Suwalki Gubernia and Vilnius City. Vital Records (Total Lines 4,638): Births for Antakalnis in Vilnius District. Marriages and divorces for Vilnius City. Deaths for Marijampole and Vilnius City. Internal Passports (Total Lines 4,595): Internal Passports for Vilnius City. Please note that not all data in a particular template is actually data of that specific type - eg. Passport Issuance records for Kaunas District appear in the Revision List Template category. Conscript and Draft lists will also appear in the Revision List category. Please look at all search results even if you don't think the record type category is relevant to your search. You just never know what you'll find.
