JGSNY Meeting Sunday, March 24 #general

Harriet Mayer

Jewish Genealogical Society New York Meeting
Sunday, March 24 at 2 PM
at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th St. New York

Program "Life Under the Tsars: Registration, Residence and Exit Routes"
Speaker: Alan Shuchat

Records of the Russian Empire show that people often registered as
citizens of one town but lived in another. What was the system of
registration and residence permits under the tsars and later in the
Soviet Union? How were people divided into social estates? How did our
ancestors obtain steamship tickets and travel >from their shtetls to the
steamship ports? To help trace our families before their departure >from
the Russian Empire, genealogist Alan Shuchat will discuss how these
records and historical knowledge help us trace our families before they
arrived here.

Alan Shuchat is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Wellesley College.
He has researched his family's history for several decades and traced
back to around 1800. He coordinates the Ukraine Special Interest Group at
the JGS of Greater Boston and is an instructor in its annual genealogy
course.

The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute will be open >from 11 AM to
4 PM.

Free for JGSNY members; guests welcome, $5 at the door.
