Town of Lefchitza? #galicia

David Ellis

Has anybody heard of the town of Lefchitza in the Austrian empire?

My great-grandfather David Leib HAUSMAN (1866-1945) was said to have
come >from the town of Stryy. He moved to Rozdol when he married Gittel
Alta MESSER, who was >from Rozdol. He emigrated to the US in 1901, while
Gittel emigrated with three children in 1904.

Between JRI-Poland and the All Galicia Database, I could find no records for
him before the births of his children in Rozdol. My grandmother's 1892 birth
record showed his name as Dawid HAUSNER, but the 1901 birth record for
her younger brother showed his surname as HAUSMAN.

David's parents were Hersh HAUSMAN and Chana Rochel WAGSCHAL.
I found records for his mother in Rozdol, but I could not find any records for
his father.

David's 1917 declaration and 1920 naturalization petition both show he was
born in Lefchitza, Austria. Yet the JewishGen Town Finder does not seem to
recognize this town. The closest matches I could find there are the towns of
Livosice in Bohemia and Leczyca (Linchits) in Poland, and neither seems a
good fit. The JewishGen Gazetteer shows a place called Luvchitse, in the
general area of Stryy but not appearing on their map. Google Maps shows
the town as Livchytsi, located between Stryy and Khodoriv, near Hnizdychiv.
This appears to be the right town, but it doesn't seem to have had a Jewish
community in the 1800s.

If you have any information about this town, please contact me. Thanks for
your help!

How do I find the child of Leah and Gershon TEICHER from Gwozdziec or Zabolotow? #general

leah teicher <anafa-e@...>

Dear Genners,
My late father in law Gershon/Gerszon TEICHER was born on January 6th 1908
in a small village near Zablotow/Zablotiv then Poland today in Ukraine called
Kulczkowce/Klitvichy.

On November 1937 he married Leie/Leje/Leah SZUBER/SCHUBER daughter of
Gerszon/Gershon SZUBER/SCHUBER and Channa Schuber born in the nearby village
Gwozdziec the couple married there.

Last summer, after researching Gesher Galicia data base and JRI Poland, and
before the International Conference in Warsaw, I saw the record in Przemsl
national Archive.

The copy is with me.

When WW2 started, my father in law was called to the Polish army. He escaped
until he arrived in Tashkent, Bukhara.

There, he met and married his 2nd wife, my late mother in law, who escaped
from Rovno.
I wonder - if he had a child >from Leah/Leje his first wife.
The Przemysl archive could not answer me.
I know that was in both villages a mass killing during the holocaust.

**But even though - **
How do I start looking in order to trace/look for if there was a baby, and
if so, did he/she survive?
where are they?
This child might be a brother/sister to my husband and his sister.

Most thankful,
Leah Teicher

I recently came upon a naturalization form that indicated a hometown of Dimenov. I cannot find such a town. I assume it is in Ukraine. Any suggestions

Family APPEL of Nowy Sacz #galicia

Jacob Fogel <jyfogel@...>

Hi to all SIGgers.

My great-great-grandmother Fani (Feige Bashe) BIRENBAUM nee APPEL
was born to her parents Zalke (Asher Zelig) APPEL & Gitel LUSTIG in
Nowy Sacz in the year 1859. She married Shaye BIRENBAUM and lived
in Spisske Podhradie, Slovakia.

I recently learned (thanks to JOWBR) that Fani's father Zalke died and
was buried in Spisske in the year 1920 and his father was named
Alexander Appel. That led me to go back to the indexes of Nowy Sacz
and I found a couple that may match by the names Susskind (which
goes together with Alexander) & Mindel Appel. They had 2 children
Bashe & Moishe. If anyone has some info on this particular family or any
other Appel family of Nowy Sacz, it would be much appreciated.

Re: Town of Lefchitza? #galicia

David Ellis <djemkitso@verizon.net> wrote about his great-grandfather
David Leib HAUSMAN, who <<was said to have come from... Stryy>>
and moved to Rozdol when he married, and according to naturalization
documents was born in <<Lefchitza, Austria.>>

David also wrote:

<<The JewishGen Gazetteer shows a place called Luvchitse, in the
general area of Stryy.... Google Maps shows the town as Livchytsi,
located between Stryy and Khodoriv, near Hnizdychiv. This appears to
be the right town, but it doesn't seem to have had a Jewish community
in the 1800s.>>

A search at JRI-Poland.org for a surname starting with HAUS and a town
that sounds like Lefchitza produced several records that mention
Lowczyce ad Zydaczow or Lowczyce pow. Zydaczow -- a match to one
of two Lowczyces listed in Gesher Galicia's Galician Town Locator
(https://www.geshergalicia.org/galician-town-locator/). The Lowczyce
near Zydaczow was in the Jewish administrative district of Zurawno.
David, Lowczyne is probably the Livchytsi, Ukraine, that you found on
GoogleMaps -- coordinates 4919 N 2408 E, 2 miles >from Ruda, 3 miles
from Hnizdychiv (Hnizdyczow), 6 miles >from Zhydachiv (Zydachow), and
15 miles >from Stryi (Stryj) -- and it may well be your ancestral town.

According to the "Gemeindelexikon der im Reichsrate vertretenen
Koenigreiche und Laender. XII. Galizien" (Gazetteer of the Crown Lands
and Territories Represented in the Imperial Council. Vol. XII. Galicia),
Lowczyce's population in 1900 was 49, including 12 Jews. The volume is
accessible online at http://tinyurl.com/GL-Galicia . An index to all towns
listed in the volume begins on page 956 (search for "Seite 965").
