Searching Chernivtsi archives for Wiznitz information #romania

rachel goldberg <rachel.goldberg100@...>

Dear Friends,

My grandmother Rachel HUBNER was born on 1906 in Bukovina, in the
small village Dihtineti, Romania (today Dykhtynets, Ukraine). During
the 1920's and and early 1930's, she with her mother and some of her
siblings lived in Wiznitz (today Vyzhnytsya). My family and I are
traveling to Wiznitz this summer, and was hoping to locate the family
address, so we will be able to visit their house. All the information
I currently have is an letter that was sent to them on 1929, which was
sent to "Familie Hubner, Wiznitz, Bukovina, Romania". This leads me to
believe that there were not many families with this surname in Wiznitz
at that time.

I believe that documents which could indicate the family address might
be found at archives in Chernivtsi, which we also plan to visit. so my
questions are:

(1) Which archive or archives in Chernivtsi should I focus on? How can
I find their contact details, such as their e-mail and phone number?
(I have a family member who will be able to speak with them in
Russian). I will be able to visit the archive, but I suppose it would
be better to contact them before our arrival.

(2) Is it possible to contact them and ask for specific information
(for payment, I suppose)? Would a better idea to send a local
researcher who will search this archive for us?

(3) Do you have any other suggestions on where to look for the family
house address in Wiznitz?

Best Regards,
Rachel Goldberg

Belinda,

Place's original Polish name used to be Snowicz in Zloczow district of
Tarnopol Province. Currently town name is known as Snovichi in Lviv Province.

This locality used to be a seat of the administrative division known as "gmina"
(commune) but in 1934 during large reorganization in Zloczow district it has lost
its central position by downgrading.

Town is listed in JGFF database under its Russian name Snovychi and as all other
Ukrainian based localities it will be eventually upgraded to current native
Ukrainian spelling name of Snovichi.

I came across this place (Snowicz) several years ago while researching Jewish
landowners in Eastern Galicia. Zygmunt Brenholtz name is included in 1904 listing
as landowner of Snowicz.

If one compares this person with listings in 1921 Poland Business Directory

http://data.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/1929/loadtop.htm?1700

where most probably his close relative Dr. Salomon Brenholz is listed as the
landowner (96 units morga), owner of grain mill, brewery and an alcohol distillery,
virtually main town employer.

Known demographic data for Snowicz:
Per 1900 census 1,691 residents, in agricultural portion of town: 123 people
including 32 Jews. Per 1921 census, total number of residents: 2,182, including 24
Jews, in the agricultural sector (i.e. folwark), 75 residents, including 19 Jews.

JRI_P database lists following number records associated with Snowicz:

Tarnopol: 135
Stanislawow: 2
Lwow: 7

There several records for researched by you surnames Katz and one record for
Peczenik.

Hope this help

Russian Jewish Question #general

Sandy <chester610@...>

I have been able to track my husband's grandfather possibly back to a
ship and date based on his naturalization request. Looking at the
ship's manifest, he is not listed, nor is anyone close to his first
name or age. We have been told that he changed his name when he
arrived in the United States. His forms say he came >from Moscow,
arriving in the United States in1901. Any suggestions on how to
proceed?

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake

Unlike many other books among the JewishGen Yizkor collection, The Scroll of My
Life is entirely a memoir by Michel (Mikhl) Radzinski describing his upbringing and
decision to leave Siemiatycze, a town of 3,716 Jews in eastern Poland near the
border of Belarus. Amid rising anti-Semitism and threat of pogroms, Radzinski
encountered a strange fearfulness as he ventured out on a market day. Further
burdened by the despair and sorrow he had observed among his fellow Jews, he told
his father that when all is said and done, I see no way out for me here. I have
decided to leave." Radzinski wrote, I have never forgotten that discussion. It was
a sad and wrenching moment that many other Jewish families must have experienced.
