POLISHOVSKI/HALEVI - Little Russia information please #general

Lea Myers &/or Sue Harrington <angon@...>

My gfather's surname was Myer POLISHOVSKI, later changed to Myer MYERS.
I have been unable to find any other Polishovski's, and do not know
where he came >from in Russia since the information on census records and
naturalisation papers just say Little Russia. My great uncle recently
told us that his father made up the name Polishovski when leaving Russia
so that he would be able to get across the border more easily - my uncle
did not know what his father's name had been previously. Jewish marriage
records state that his hebrew name was Myer HaLevi. Does this mean that
his family name would have been Levi or HaLevi?

If anyone has any idea about this, or perhaps some idea of where he might
have come >from in Russia (Berdichev perhaps?), I would be pleased for
some ideas.

Please reply directly to me at angon@...

thanks

Lea Myers

Re: Belarus SIG Website Updated #belarus

Reeva Kimble <rKimble@...>

Dear Belarus SIG Members:

On my web site for Mir, Belarus is an index of names that appear in the
book entitled "The History of the Mir Yeshiva.=B2
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~rkimble/Mirweb/MirYIndex.html There are 791
names of people, associated with the Mir Yeshiva.

Rick Saffran, whose ancestors came >from Mir, transliterated the entire
index. He indicated those names that also appear in Neil Rosenstein's book
"Latter Day Leaders, Scholars and Sages."

"The History of the Mir Yeshiva" is written in Hebrew. Neither Rick nor I
have a copy. If you do, and are willing to translate portions, please
contact me.

I would very much like to order documents in advance but I'm afraid no
one has answered my very first email which is where in Vitebsk can I
start to find information on my grandmother Haia or Clara
ALENIKOFF/ALEJNIKOV/ALENIKOV/ALEYNIKOV who was born, I believe, on 14th
September 1902 in Vitebsk. I'm also after further information on her
first husband she married in Vitebsk, Michael BLUSTEIN/BLAUSTEIN who she
married in 1918.

for different shtetls in Belarus, please see the article in the first issue
of the Belarus SIG Online Newsletter which discusses this subject. It can
be reached directly at

some records for Vitebsk in the archives, but for limited years.

Searching for FINKELSTEIN relatives. #general

Masnick, Burt <masnick@...>

Successful research (and JewishGen) have helped me locate heretofore
unknown second and third cousins. But I am missing basic information
on my first cousins. My uncle on my mother's side was Hyman FINKELSTEIN.
Hymie was my mother's oldest brother and he died on July 4, 1943 at the
age of 37. Hyman was married to "Lottie" (we assume Charlotte),lived in
Sunnyside, Queens, New York and had at least two children (my sister
believes they were male), most likely born in the late 20s or the 30s.
Here's the problem. Hymie died of what was probably stomach cancer in
1943. My mother's side of the family completely lost contact with Lottie
and her children after Hymie's death. Thus I have (or had) first cousins
and an aunt of whom I know nothing. They could be alive or dead, in New
York or anywhere else in the world.

I have seen Hymie's tombstone and Lottie's is not beside his, so she may
have remarried or moved or still be alive. If Lottie is still alive she
would probably be near 90. I would appreciate any assistance in locating
my cousins and/or Lottie so that I can try to reconnect our families.

I've written to Jay privately, encouraging him to join the Novoalexandrovsk
group and the LitvakSIG. Had he accessed our Webpage, research groups pages,
he could have looked up Panadel and found that it was in the Novoalexandrovsk
district and written to the coordinator of that reseach group for assistance.

If you have any other information to help him, write to him privately.
