Cremieux Benevolent Society (Cypress Hills Cemetery) #germany

alhelcleg@...

I am seeking information on the history of the Cremieux Benevolent
Society in New York which operated >from about 1851 to 1938. My
ancestors named MEHRINGER are buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery in
graves owned by the Cremieux Benevolent Society. Any background
information on the Society would be appreciated.

Alice Wolfteich Atlantic Beach, New York alhelcleg@aol.com

MOD NOTE: The Cypress Hills area is on the border of Brooklyn and Queens
and is served by the "Jackie Robinson Parkway" aka Interboro Parkway.
A number of Jewish cemeteries are located there including the one mentioned
above. Others include Union Field Cemetery which was founded by Cong. Rodeph
Shalom, one of the major Reform Jewish congregations in New York.

It is difficult to reach this area using public transportation. 2006 Conference
organizers might be encouraged organize group trips to this area. Otherwise,
GerSIG can help setting up car pools. I'm a frequent visitor to Union Field
Cemetery and can testify to both the large number of German Jewish family plots
there and also the difficulty involved in getting there. John Lowens - MOD 1

2006 Conference - Research at LBI #germany

A & B Algaze <Algaze@...>

I am very much looking forward to the IAJGS conference to be held in New
York City in August of 2006. I am especially interested in doing genealogical
research at the Leo Baeck Institute. I understand that it is part of the
Center for Jewish History and is located at 15 W 16th Street in Manhattan.
[Aprox. 15 to 20 minutes by subway or shuttle bus >from Conference headquarters.]

I would be interested in hearing >from anyone who has done any genealogical
research at Leo Baeck Institute and had success (or perhaps did not have success).

What was your experience? What were you looking for? What did you find?
Was the staff knowledgeable? Were they helpful? Any suggestions for searching
the on-line catalogue and doing research on site?

Next to this tombstone there was another one of a woman named Elkeli (?),

Does anybody have information about this person or can reffer me to

'DEATH AT SEA' QUESTION #unitedkingdom

Shirley Collier <shirley.collier@...>

I was at Kew yesterday and I looked up the Register of Deaths at Sea for
Ena. I went through practically the whole of 1912 and I discovered that
most of the deaths at sea recorded in that Register were >from ports other
than Southampton.

I queried this with the Research desk. I said I thought it very unlikely,
considering the numbers of deaths recorded in the Register, that the ships
leaving Southampton that year would have had what appeared to be almost 100%
safe passage for all its passengers.

They were unable to come up with any reason for this so I have now sent an
official enquiry to the National Archives and hope they might have an answer
as to whether there are any other Registers of Deaths at Sea available for
ships
leaving Southampton bound for New York, and where they might be, especially
for the ship in question, the Majestic >from the White Star Line, which ended
its sailing career in
dock at Morecombe in 1914.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Are deaths at sea shown on ships
manifests other than the Ellis Island ones which appear to be for arrivals
of passengers? If so, how does access them?

HERZL from Semlin - 'holder of privilege' #austria-czech

Florence & Henry Wellisch <kelwel@...>

This may not quite belong to the Austria-Czech discussion group, but I hope
the powers that be will let it go through. As many people know, the family
of Theodor Herzl came >from Semlin (Zemun). This town is now a suburb of
Belgrade but in the past it was on the southern border of the empire. During
the 18th and part of the 19th century it was in the so-called military
frontier and I heard that Jews were not allowed to reside there. However I
have now received a stack of genealogical documents on the Herzl family and
these confirm that Jews were living in Semlin as "Holder of a privilege"
(Privilegiumstraeger). These privileges were issued by the empress Maria
Theresia in 1753 and one of the Holders of Privilege was Awigdor
Herzl-Hacohen, Theodor Herzls Gr-gr-gr-grandfather. Does anyone know what
this kind of privilege would contain?

GUTTMAN and other families from Tabor #austria-czech

Linda Berkowitz <e-berkowitz@...>

I was away when the thread on Tabor began but I hold a keen interest
because I can trace family back to the 1830s in Tabor, though the
family is not one of the five familiantin.

My families >from Tabor include the FANTLs and FREUNDs. My
ggrandmother, Emma FANTL GOLDSTEIN was born in Tabor in 1861. She
claimed that her father Joachim FANTL was also born in Tabor (1834).
Most of Joachim and his wife, Wilhemina's, children immigrated to the
US and settled in Chicago, the only exception being their daughter
Mathylda FANTL FREUND, who remained in Tabor. Mathylda's son Rudolph
intermarried and was, to my understanding, untouched during the
Shoah, though most of his relatives perished. Rudolph FREUND's
descendants still live in Tabor and own the same property that the
family has had for over 100 years.

As for the GUTTMAN family, I have a rather extensive genealogy and
family tree beginning with Moritz FUERTH (b. 1855; d. 1914) and Clara
GUTTMAN FUERTHOVA (b. 1867; d. 1843 in Theresienstadt). Though much
of the family perished in the Shoah, several branches survive,
including: descendents of Clara's daughter Anna FUERTH HUTTER and
her son Arnost FUERTH.

If anyone has any additional information on these families, or
possible leads, I would be delighted to hear >from them.

Re: Sanatorium Furth, Vienna - Birth and Death links #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Yesterday I posed a question in my posting re Sanatorium Furth and its owner,
Dr Lothar FURTH. This is the Sanatorium in Vienna where both Sigger Frank
Eisinger and I were born.

I asked "has anyone a link to the FURTH family?

Well, I have found the answer myself this morning ...and it is a tragic one.
The title of my posting was sadly very apt and telepathic:

......., just three weeks after the Nazis had marched into Vienna, FURTH
and his wife killed themselves. They injected themselves with poison inside
Schmidgasse 14.

“We found out that our great grandfather owned the match monopoly in the
Hapsburg empire. Our grandfather owned a brewery." see:

http://www.insidetennis.com/1104_andrews.html
Please read this URL as it may have more links for us.
It is tragic, but fascinating.

....... Chris and Rich [who were not aware of their Jewish Viennese ancestry]
are not the only living FURTH heirs. ... {their mother Elizabeth nee REDLICH
was born at the sanatorium and committed suicide in 1971}.. they discovered
that, unknown to the Andrewses, another branch of the family lived on the
East Coast. One relative, Eva PERL, Lothar FURTH'S 96-year-old first cousin,
was also born at Schmidgasse 14. Another was Alfred STRASSER who recalled how,
as an 11-year-old .....

Frank Eisinger told me [I have his permission to quote] that the gynaecologist
who assisted at his birth was Dr Jacques NEUER, born 14.07.1884.
He emigrated to New York and had an elegant practice here but, tragically
he also committed suicide.

Frank also knows that the Sanatorium was built in 1868/69.

So, the end of Sanatorium Furth was very tragic.. and we remember the devoted
staff here today.

It might be worth looking for her in the GRO marine deaths register, which you can access online via www.1837online.co.uk (choose 'overseas'). If she's there you can then order her death certificate.
Otherwise I would expect a death at sea to be recorded on the passenger manifest (often a separate section at the end of the list of passengers). There is also, as you say, a list of deaths at sea held at Kew. If you fail to find your relative in the GRO index, contact me privately as I go to Kew fairly frequently and may be able to do a quick look-up for you.
