Tracing Cohen name #unitedkingdom

Annette Young

My great grandparents were Cohen & Goldberg [two of the most common
names] I was named after my ggm but didn't know the surname until I
checked a death record of their son 1908 in Los Angeles [my paternal
grandfather] . We advertised in the Jewish newspaper in Manchester,
Eng. as my father was born there. Within a few hours we had been
contacted by a 3rd cousin who informed us the Goldberg's came >from
Poland. In searching Polish records >from Jewishgen I came upon the
marriage of Moses Kohn to Hana Goldberg the names on the previous death
certificate. They had been changed to Morris and Annie in England.
>from there -census records, death records, alien records, etc. filled
in the voids.
Look for the name of the spouse who has a less common name and it might
lead you further back.
Good luck,

Over the past few years, I have read with great
interest and also frustration, the desire of many
people to trace thier family roots. One thing, from
my
perspective, is that they all have one thing in
common, namely the families they are searching for
all
have names which shall we say are not that common.

My question is, how does one search for relatives
whose name is COHEN? and landed in the UK and USA at
the turn of the 20th century.

Stephen Cohen
It is possible, albeit harder. I also have Cohen
family and I managed to trace them back to the 1870's.
I was helped by the fact of having a great-great
grandfather with an unusual name, Philip. I could
therefore find details on the 1901 British Census.

Naturalization Records #unitedkingdom

Hi,

My grtgrtgrandfather, Harris Woolf migrated to London >from Poland ("Russia,
Poland") according to the censuses in about the late 1860's. According to the
censuses, he became a naturalized British subject. Does anyone know how I
might find (or try to find) any records of his naturalization?

Thank you in advance,

Janette Levey Frisch

he was still young his family moved back to Berlin,

The obituary of Bernard Harris, of LIverpoool, in the JC 17 September 1937
stated that he established the Wrexhan Hebrew Congregation and was its
president for a number of years. The first mention of religious services
in that
town (which was the first Jewish community in North Wales) was in
September
1892. I followed through the reports in the JC until 1914. I could find no
mention of Bernard Harris in that period. I suppose he might have been
elected
president after 1914 but I have no idea why he should have been credited
with
founding the congregation or how it came to be claimed in the obituary.
Harold Pollins
Harold,

Have you looked in the Jewish Year Book (for the relevant years) for the
congregation?
If he was president, I'm sure his name would be mentioned.
Have you checked the census for Wrexham to see if he was living in the area
during this period.
If he wasn't, then it's highly unlikely that he could have founded the
congregation or been it's president.
One man doesn't usually found a congregation, it's usually a group effort by
the local residents.
They had to, at least, have a minyan before any congregation could be set
up.
Maybe he was *one* of the founders and this got changed to 'he was the
founder' by his recently bereaved relatives.

Who wrote the obit?
Sometimes obits are written by (cub) reporters and they can only go on the
information that they are given by friends and family.
