Dear Friends,
Does anybody know whether or not any Jewish cemetery still remains in
the city of Poltava and if any any burial records >from the 1910's and
1920's exists? Is there anybody at the Jewish community I could write
to? My husband's grandfather, Lajb Maimin, may be buried in Poltava and
if a grave can be located, we would like to visit.
Looking forward very much to hearing >from you,
warmest regards and chag sameach

Hallo LatvianSIG

My family and I recently paid a researcher, Irina VEINBERGA, to research
our KLAPMAN family in Silmala, Latvia. A report came back >from her about 3
weeks later with information on a KLAPMAN/KLOPMAN family >from Cesis, Latvia.
I wrote back to ask her why she looked in Cesis, when I had asked her to
look in Silmala, but my email bounced!!!!!!! I re-sent it and it bounced
again. Does anyone have the correct email for Irina VEINBERGA??????????
(maybe I got it wrong, although I doubt that because she has answered all my
earlier emails prior to the research being started, I understand she is a
well-known Latvian researcher and is used by many of the LatvianSIGGERS.
Perhaps her email address is down ??

Naturally, all replies with her email address, send to me privately, if you
would. Mind you, if there is a problem with her email address, perhaps it
is of interest to other LatvianSIGGERS? or if she has a new one, perhaps
the LatvianSIGGERS would like to be made aware. I feel totally in the dark
at the moment, but am sure there is a very logical explanation. (Gulp! I
certainly hope so!)

My email is digitalphoto@icon.co.za

Many thanks,

Maiden Name of Mother of Abraham, Morris..RAJCHMAN/REICHMAN #belarus

Lynne Siegel

Dear Belarus SIG Members,

I am puzzled and have not been able to discern the maiden name
for great grandmother Chana/Anna/Annie ______.As indicated on
Abraham's first marriage certificate in 1903, her last name is
extremely long. As indicated on his brother's marriage
certificate in 1904, the name appears to have been greatly
shortened. Until recently, the family believed it was to be read
as "KATZ". It was a big surprise to see the much longer name in
Grandfather Abraham's first marriage certificate.

Both Abraham and Morris had left Brest, Belarus in about 1900.
I would really appreciate opinions as to why there appears to
be such a big discrepancy between the last names for the same
person. I would also be interested to know if anyone can
recognize what long last name Grandfather Abraham was trying to
transliterate into English. I have a suspicion that the first
letter is supposed to indicate the guttural "kh" in both of the
marriage certificates.

Until I discover the surname for Chana/Anna/Annie, I am stopped
from going back any farther on this branch of the family tree.
The two wedding certificates can be found on viewmate at the
following address:

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate

(Abraham's first wedding certificate):VM8592

(Morris' wedding certificate):VM8593

Please respond privately to lynnesiegel@comcast.net.
Thank you for helping to unravel this mystery.

NONMUS - Frankfort>London>Bristol-18thC #unitedkingdom

Gloria <gloria@...>

Hi,

I would be grateful for any assistance with finding out more about my
forebear Hannah NONMUS (ca 1736? - ca 1806?), particularly her maiden name
and family circumstances in Frankfort, Germany.

Hannah wrote a booklet detailing her conversion >from Judaism to Wesleyanism
at the Calvinistic-Methodist Tabernacle in Penn Street, Bristol on 8 October
1775.

She described herself as a Jewess >from Frankfort (sic), and explains that
she met her husband Jacob NONMUS <being a Doctor in the English army>. She
followed him to England where they married at the Synagogue, Dukes Place,
London (ca 1755-1758), and lived near Bishopsgate-Street for almost 16
years.

Next the family moved to Bristol, and the author relates how she converted
after the birth of 12 children. The IGI shows her christening and those of
three of her children on 8 Oct 1775 at the Calvinistic-Methodist Tabernacle,
Bristol. The children were: Isaac (1769-), Abraham (1771-), and Sarah
(1773-1785). Sarah died in Bristol in 1785.

Hannah writes that her husband Jacob later left her, <being forced to go to
sea as a doctor>. The IGI features a Jacob NONMUS as a party to two
marriages in January 1784 In Boston, Massachusetts - so perhaps this is him.

Thanks in anticipation,

Gloria Grant (nee Nonmus) =AD Brisbane, Australia

Happy Succot

The 1901 UK census shows my gg gps

NOAH COHEN and DORA COHEN at 59 Wentworth Street, Whitechapel, London

and their 2 sons ISRAEL COHEN AND SIMON COHEN. They also had a 3rd son
JOSEPH COHEN (my ggf) who is listed separately.

The census gives Noah's age as 61.

Dora died in 1906 aged 58. Her death certificate says "Wife of Noah Ammiel
COHEN, a provision merchant"

I'm looking for a record of Noah COHEN's death - I can't locate it in the
BMD records or cemetery records.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please ?

Many thanks

There is all kinds of information beyond typical birth, marriage and
death records archived in the main archives in Vilnius. We found the
original books listing the students and faculty >from the Univ. of Vilnius
uprising in 1831 with lists >from the trial with names of participants,
crimes, town they were from, sentences etc. There was a copy also at the
Kaunas archives and another at the Military Museum in Kaunas.

I saw some of Kosciusko's records at the Vilnius archives in June, 2006
and his diploma >from the Univ. of Vilnius at the University Library when
we were researching our family there this summer. Since there seemed to
be information about the Jewish regiments in the Lithunian Cavalry there
should be a record of the members. The most helpful people we found were
at the military museum in Kaunas. I will look through my notes to get the
name of the gentleman who helped us there and send it along on this site.
