Re: Source Material for the NYC Genealogy Seminar #galicia

Phyllis Kramer <phylliskramer1@...>

After reading Suzan Wynne's message in the digest, I reflected that many of
us have material >from Galicia and that a wonderful thing would result from
each of us bringing that material to the Summer Seminar in NYC. The
resource room and/or computer room will be set up to handle temporary loans
of source material. I will bring my copy of the 1891 Galician Business
Directory and I hope Suzan is able to bring her microfilm of the 1929
Polish Directory.

My plan is to make the 1891 Business Directory available on Jewishgen
around the same time.

It's a perfectly wonderful opportunity to add to our knowledge. And I look
forward to seeing/meeting you all then.

Searching: Arthur RUBIN, late of California, d.1984 #general

John A. Rubin <jaru@...>

Arthur RUBIN was my 1st cousin, born in NYC, moved to California in the
late 1930s, married and had children there whom I seek in the course of
my quest for information about our family. To date, I have found
information about our common grandparents, Samuel and Mary RUBIN, of
NYC. I knew all of Arthur's brothers and sisters and his mother Annie,
who was my father's [Charles'], sister-in-law. The last time that I saw
Arthur was about 50 years ago in NYC. My cousin, Stella [his sister],
told me in 1984 that he had just passed away. I appear to be the last
survivor of my generation.

If you are,or know of, one of his descendants, I would like to hear from
you privately at jaru@ulster.net.

Re names of ships:
My late father always told us that they came on the Embiricos, November, 1923. At
the National Archives I discovered that the ship was the Byron. Embiricos may
have been a Greek pronunciation. It was a Greek ship.
Ida Selavan-Schwarcz
Arad, Israel

Could the name

of the ship be off a bit due to the accent of the passenger? Try hearing the
name spoken with an accent. V and W can sound alike. ...

Gesher Galicia Web Site Links to Members' Web Sites #galicia

Gesher Galicia Web Site Links to Members' Web Sites

As a service to its members, the Gesher Galicia web site now links to
its members' personal genealogy-related web sites. Having a link to a
personal web site >from the popular Gesher Galicia site will increase
the visibility of the personal site, increasing the number of "hits."

Furthermore, the Gesher Galicia site is indexed by many web search
engines, which regularly index all the web sites to which the Gesher
Galicia site is linked, and this will make it easier for members to
have their personal sites indexed. Links to members' sites can be
found on this page:
<http://www.jewishgen.org/galicia/memlin.html>

If you are a member of Gesher Galicia who has created a
genealogy-related web site, contact the Gesher Galicia webmaster, Mark
Heckman, at <mrheckman@yahoo.com> . Give him the URL of the site and a
brief description of what the site contains.

For example, the first member link is to a site created by Moishe
Miller (member #241). Moishe describes his page as follows: "The site
includes the first 5 - 8 generations >from Pesach Langsam, as well as
Maps, a (Java-Script) Soundex Generator, numerous pictures, helpful
addresses, LDS FHC info, NARA info for NY, etc."

The links to members' web sites are intended for personal pages
containing family histories, pictures, and other genealogical
information. Web sites devoted to entire towns more properly belong
on the ShtetLinks or Yizkor Book Project sites.

You must be a paid member of Gesher Galicia to take advantage of this
service, although anyone may access members' personal web pages from
the Gesher Galicia web site.

However, non-members as well as members can list their sites on the
JewishGen "Web Links" site, at <http://www.jewishgen.org/links/>

We realize that many people occasionally change internet service
providers and so the URL of their web sites may change over time. It
is the responsibility of each member who has his/her web site linked
to notify the Gesher Galicia webmaster when the member's site moves or
is taken down so that we can keep the links up to date.
