Re: Ellis Island Searchable Database #general

Debbie Raff <seraff@...>

I tried this searchable database in the past and couldn't locate the names I
had included on the wall.

I received a very quick reply to my query about this problem. As I recall,
the answer was that the database only included the 1st wall and the new wall
had not been included, yet. I don't know what the status of the database is
at this time.

Does anyone out there know when it was last updated?

Taylorville, Illinois #general

Maurine McLellan <trmclell@...>

Is there anyone out there in the Taylorville, Illinois area who might be
willing to do a lookup for me? I am trying to find out where my Great
uncle, Benjamin Bothman, died. I know he was living in Taylorville in
1900(>from the census) and he was dead by 1920 ( his wife was listed as a
widow in the 1920 census). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes, there are, but since they are somewhat fewer on this list, messages

Bretchin #general

Joel Ives <jives@...>

In response to Mitchell Silk's question on the location of Bretchin.
"Bretchin" is the yiddish name for "Bohorodczany." Bohorodczany is a
city that is adjacent to Nadvornaya which may explain why Mitchell's
ancestor mentioned it in his letter.

In the early 1900's the Bohorodczany Society met in New York City in a
building that they called "Bretchin Hall."

My ZANKEL family originated in the city of Bohorodczany, in Galicia,
Austria Hungary. Today the city in located in the Ukraine.

Re: Erasmus High School in NYC??? #general

AJL12 <ajl12@...>

Erasmus Hall High School is located at 911 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11226.
It has an alumni association, of which I am a member (class of '59). There is
a set of "Chronicles of Erasmus Hall" Vol I published in 1906, Vol II 1937, Vol
III 1987.

It was founded as a private academy in 1787 on land provided by the Dutch
Reformed Church, still located across the street. It became a public school in
1896. It is the oldest high school in the US on its original site.

They may have student records, write.

Betty Feir asked

"Has anyone ever heard of this public school?? My grandmother said she went
to Erasmus High in the early 1900's...does anyone know where I could find
information about her attendance there??? or a year book?? or any info???"

But of course, all of us Erasmus Hall High School graduates have heard of
it - grin.

It is located at 911 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn ,NY 11226. (And I remembered
that without looking it up after more years than I care to remember).

It has an illustrious history. For many years until the late 1960's it was
one of the finest schools in New York City, producing many thousands of
well-educated and successful graduates. The student body was largely Jewish
from the 1930's till the late 1960's and among its famous alumni are Barbra
Streisand and Beverly Sills. (There are many more but I can't think of them
at the moment.)

I would LOVE to figure out how to use this microfilm. I was at the
Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City last Spring. I tried to figure it
out, but it doesn't seem to be indexed in a manner where it was of use.

The usually helpful librarians were at a total loss themselves,as to how to
proceed. So, if someone out there has had success, PLEASE let us all know.

Searching: RASSEKH/RASEKH & BRIN/BRINN/BRAM/BRUM #general

Does anyone have info on the Persian Jewish surname of RASSEKH/RASEKH? I
know I asked this before, but I forgot. The father side had converted to
Baha'i faith, and I understand that these Baha'i RASSEKHs have a common
Jewish ancestor/ ancestors. Our family's last residence in Iran was in
Tehran, but they originaly came >from the south (Shiraz and around there).

Also, I am looking for info on a Madeleine BRIN (BRINN/BRAM/BRUM?) who I
know lived in San Diego at one time. We are unsure of her real surname.
Her adoption occured at a later point in life (adolescence, or just
before). She apparently had some connection to the Starlight theatre in
San Diego. She came over >from FrAnce, though may have originated
somewhere else. We dont know what happened to her other family. She had
5 children by Alfonso TESSADA (origins unknow, family left Spain and
Portugal by 1500)-Regina, Benyamin, Ruven (Rudy), Frank, and Debora (died
young). These children were not born in the U.S.

LDS information needed #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

This may sound a stupid question but please bear with me :)

In Sao Paulo (Brazil) the FHC is very modest. It only has one computer and
3 microfilm readers. A lady (sister) takes care of searching the CDs for
cities and family names. It is a cumbersome and time consuming method.
Therefor, this peculiar situation justifies my question:

Is it possible to purchase the CDs for the International Genealogical Index
and the Family History Library Catalog? If the answer is positive, where
can I buy them? I visited the LDS site but nowhere could I find such
information.

Many thanks in advance. Please answer in private.
