JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

"Farewell to Sabbath" is sung in Hebrew by Marta Sebestyen and featured
on "The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania" by the group Musikas. She is singing the first five lines of a hebrew "piyyut" (religious poem) titled "Adir Ayom V'Nora", one of several songs optionally recited following Havdalah (the ritual prayer which marks the conclusion of the Sabbath). The full text of the poem can be found in some Orthodox prayer books immediately following the Havdalah service in a section called "Zemirot Motzei Shabbat" ("post Sabbath songs"). My siddur doesn't have English translation, but the poem addresses the Mighty and Awesome nature of G-d and is a supplication for guidance, fortitude and salvation. "The Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer" by Macy Nulman (Jason Aronson Press) contains this reference: "ADDIR AYOM VENORA-An alphabetical poem recited at the outgoing of the Sabbath. The third line in every stanza commences with G-d's name in a scriptural phrase." Unfortunately nothing is mentioned about the poem's author or origins. Mindy Soclof

the Memorial Day Crash
#hungary
Carol Skydell <skydell@...>
Dear H-Siggers
Despite the crash JewishGen suffered at the very beginning of the Memorial Day weekend, specifically Friday evening May 28th, we are slowly coming back to normal as our systems are being restored. Unfortunately some of them had to be handled individually by the dedicated behind the scenes folks, Susan King, Michael Tobias, Warren Blatt, and Iris Folkson who were up most of the night when the server finally came back to life. Since I know diddly about the technical aspects of JewishGen, I have assigned myself the role of helping in another way....and this is it. Because this happened over a holiday and it required the technicians at our ISP to be working practically around the clock, the bill for their services will be staggering. We are volunteers....they are not. We are going to need some financial assistance >from each and every one of you as best you can afford. As you know, every one of our search engines, every program and every project is provided as a public service by JewishGen to anyone, anywhere in the world. We ask nothing more than your voluntary contribution (tax deductible in the U.S.) as your way of recognizing and helping to support all the services we are providing. Some of you have been quite generous in the past, but some of you have not yet taken this important step to show that you care, that you appreciate what is being offered as a free service, and that you want to show your committment to this effort. The JewishGen-erosity secure credit card site http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/ is up and running....I know, I've just been there and joined the JewishGen 1K club. To those of you out there who can afford it...why not join me <grin> And to those of you who cannot handle a 1K contribution, so be it...we are deeply grateful for whatever amount you feel you can contribute. If you're uncomfortable, even with a secure credit card server, you can mail your check to: JewishGen, Inc. 12 Greenway Plaza Suite 1100, Houston, TX 77046 and please let us know if we may list you as a supporter. Many thanks for your hoped-for financial support. Carol JewishGen Operations

JewishGen server error being reported
#galicia
Carol Skydell <skydell@...>
To Galitzianers
Folks, apparently many of you have not updated your bookmarks for JewishGen in a very long time. It's apparent to us since well over a year ago we retired www1.jewishgen.org and merged it with www.jewishgen.org. We just maintained a pointer to it should any of you were using an old bookmark. When we got the server back on line Sunday night... we did *not* revitalize the www1.jewishgen.org domain name. With the Memorial Day "cleanout"...we've cleaned up <grin> and are only restoring current material. You will *all need to start back at the JewishGen home page* http://www.jewishgen.org and revise your bookmarks throughout the current site. If you are receiving server errors, first check and make sure you are hitting www.jewishgen.org and not www1.jewishgen.org. Only after you have verified that you are at the right address should you notify us of any problems. We have checked and verified 90% of the site and we know it works. Carol JewishGen Operations MODERATOR NOTE: Thanks, Carol, for keeping us informed, and thanks to the JewishGen staff for working so hard on our behalf. We are very grateful to all of you! Keep up the good work!

Re: New LDS Website - Need Belarus Feedback
#belarus
Mpcamitta@...
To Carol, and others who might be interested:
Thank you for your posting, in which you referred to my LDS search. I went back (early this morning) and looked for BASHEINS under International Genealogical Index and Ancestral File. Mine are listed in both, but I saw no section entitled "sealed to the church." Any suggestions about where to look for that category? There are no microfilm numbers for my BASHEINS either, which are listed, if they exist, with "submitter" information. Am I to assume that the BASHEIN information was submitted by a relation who was a Church member, and that the rest were posthumously converted to the Church of the LDS? There is a reference to volume number, but whose volume, I am wondering? Since I looked for any other family name that I could think of, and found nothing at all, and then did the same for my husband, with no luck either, I wonder what the nature of their submissions has been. I have a suspicion that those listed in either file have converted, or have been converted posthumously, or maybe were "identified" by a church member as relations. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Miriam Camitta Wynnewood, PA
