Re: Erasmus High School in NYC #general

In the book "When Brooklyn was the World" Erasmus is described as the
"elite" of the High Schools in the 30's.-40's. (I was there then and it was
great.)
The very old building in the center of the square is the original school and
was no longer in use as it was very fragile.

What has happened over the years I don't know, but I assume since Brooklyn
itself has changed so much, so have the schools.

Re URLs #general

George Friedman

Written by arlene@ORLINTER.COM:
Please everyone when you type a URL make it "clickable" I find it very
difficult to read these addresses, let alone have to copy the whole thing by
hand.
Arlene: Nice idea, except that not everyone is using software that can do
what you ask. But you can still, with most software, avoid copying the URL
(or any other text clipping you want) by hand.

In Windows, drag your mouse across the text you want, highlighting it.
Then move it to the clipboard; depending on the program, you can press
Control-Insert, or press Control-C, or pull down the EDIT menu and click
on Copy. These all copy the highlighted text to the clipboard. Then go
to your web browser and start the same as if you were going to hand-type
a URL; but instead of typing the URL, copy >from the clipboard. Again,
depending on your software, this may be as simple as pressing Shift-Insert,
or Control-V, or it may involve pulling down the EDIT menu and choosing
Paste. Go on >from there.

Enjoy.

Re: NJ burial society records #general

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

Allen Jordan asks about accessing the records of a defunct
burial society...

Burial societies actually functioned somewhat like insurance companies and
each state has an Insurance Commissioner... You might try writing to that
office to determine if there is any division that would have records of
defunct burial societies and what information those records would contain.

Re: Watch out for Surname Book Offer #general

Ron Kaminker tells us that he unfortunately fell prey to this scam...

Had he checked the JewishGen Discussion Group Archived messages he would
have been thoroughly forewarned against falling into this trap. Messages
as far back as two years ago appeared about Halbert's of Bath Ohio.

I note that their prices have risen dramatically because when I got the
offer in 1994 it was considerably lower..
I also wonder if they ever got their soundex act together because it was
totally wrong when they offered to sell the world book of SKYDELL. They
soundexed SKYDELL as S234 instead of S340 <VBG>

Perhaps a letter to Halbert's with a copy to the Consumer Affairs Bureau of
the State of Ohio, demanding the money back would be successful.
